by the ladles. Alter resuming their march they pro
ceeded up South Broad to West Broad, down West
Broad to Congress, down Congress to the Volks Gar-

lunch prepared in Mr. Swartx’a best style.
After satisfying their appetites, which had become
shaiy^ned by their tramp thrbfigh the heavy sand,
tuey were reformed and proceeded down Congress to
Barnard, down Barnard to the Bay, and thence to the
Exchange, when they ware dtomlmed.
Many of the firemen visited the theatre in full dress
to listen to s recitation b/Miss Annie Beater, dedics-
ted to the Germania.
The festivities of the day were wound up by a groud
ball at St. Andrew's Hall. The brave firemen and
their wives or lovers made tMmselvea merry, and en
gaged in the mazy waltz to the excellent music of
Bupkert's bond, and shortly after twelve, supper being
announced, they all repaired to the banqueting room,
and after the removal cf the cloth speeches were made
and wit and wine flowed promiscuously. Upon re
turning to the hall, those who did not care to retire
amused themselves with the quadrille aud waltz until
an early hour in the morning.
Theatre—Brilliant Success of Jflea Char
lotte Thompson.
Notwithstanding the inclemency ot the weather, the
Circus, Germania Ball, aud other attractions in the
oity, one of the largest audiences of the season was iu
attendance last evening, to welcome the return of Sa-
Vsouth's tavorite. Miss Charlotte Thompson, to our
boards. Her reception was one of the most cordial
and enthusiastic which we have ever Witnessed in our
Theatre, and, as an evidence of the sincere and dis
criminating appreciation of the audience, must have
bsen truly gratifying to that young
The play was Bulwer’s “Lady of Lyons,” and the
part of Pauline is one well adapted for the display-
ment of Miss Thompson's best points. At the rise of
the curtain the recognition was slight, a circumstance
which reminded us of the change which has taken
place in our audiences since her former engagement
here. She perhaps observed the absence cf once
f im iliar faces, and felt that her success depended on
her merit and not upon the partiality of old friends.
During the first act the audience were attentive—the
moond held (hem in deep interest—the third act
wrought them up to a degree of enthusiasm, which
found utterance in a universal call which brought her
before the curtain, which call woe repeated with even
iuteoser enthusiasm at the close of the fourth act and at
the close of the play. We have never witnessed in our
Theatre a more universal and enthusiastic demonstra
tion of approval than that which was swarded to Miss
Thompson last night.
She was ably supported by Mr. Longdon as Claude
Bfelpotte, which wo think was his best performance on
o ar stage. Mr. Benson was very good as Gen. Du
mas, and the subordinate characters were generally
fall sustained.
The fireman’s address was wall delivered by Miss
Sen ter, who appeared in fireman's costume.
Miss Thompson makes her second- appearance to
night in the character of Parthenia, with Mr. Lang-
don as Ingomar, when we expect to see a crowded
house.
