Axe you not disposed to envy the life of a man whose home was that palace. He was a cousin of the French Etuperoi Would you-not like lobe the cousin of the French Emperor? He was the first Chau, berlaia and superintendent of tlie imperial theaters. Wouldn’t you give the world to be present at all the ceremonies of *be im perial court, to have the distribution of the Sets to them, and to be the mortal whose * very sight wreathes in smiles the faces ot haiichtieststage beauties, and wb«mdraughts on their hearts they dare not protest? Indeed vou would ! He had seventeen grand crosses, of the highest, seleciest orders iu.-Europe. Don’t you envy him? Good 1 reader, envy- "^iTiave seen many a spoilt child of fortuuSj, ;i in his dressiuggown. I have never seen ooeJfJ:. would have changed places with. Certainty Count Bacciocchi seemed dandled by lorttjhe tenderly as she ever dandles ^uiyoue. H- was born in the gilded cradle, ami h(j trod life on a carpet of roses; but be was^be vi» tim of a disease which tortured lnni with barbarous cruelty. It was one of those ne i - vous diseases beyond the reach of medical^ science. He could not remain still either in a chair or in a bed without suffering the acutest pain. The nerves of motion were af fected. He transacted business on fool; he dictated' letters and lists of invitation as ne ■ paced his office. He listened to the per formance of operas in his latticed box, which had no seat in it, and was covered with a thick carpet, that.be might.walk during the whole performance. He saw bhljets dauced from the slips of tlie stage. Ol'teu he would take the dullest books issued from the pi-ess, bare candles lighted in broad daylight, and read the stupid work until he caught its heaviness and was com posed to sleep. .Sometimes sleep would not come even when so summoned■, then he would walk until he had so exhausted the body that the nerves were insensible to paiu, and sleep would become necessary to lil'e. On one oscasiou he walked without iutei- mission for thirty six hours, trying to subdue pain by fatigue. The soles of his teet were red. as .if they had b6en boiled and the blood forced through all their pores. The emperor gave him rooms adjoining one of the largest passages of Hit* Tuileries, and had it covered with a tfiick Auhosson carpet, that the poorpa’ient might enjoy his painful round with least pain, tie died of sheer .exhaustion • from waut of sleep. Shortly before he died he murmured, ‘■Norine! Norinerepeatedly. “What is Ibhl ?” “Do you want anything ?” asked one of the persons present. “Don't question me,’’ replied the fast dying man. Norine was a little shop girl of Leghorn, his first lo*;; she is now au old wrinkled shop keeper of that city, and has quite a Urge family. The dying man, though lie had lived' in palaces amid the rauk and beauty of Europe, was familiar with the prettiest women behind the footlights, thought of none of the pageantry and pomp ol his career. They were'vanity of vanities. All his last thoughts belonged to the humble maideu whose eye had returned his glance, and whose lip had first breathed love into his ear. [From the Brandon (Miss.) Republican, Nov. 22.] Tbe time was when tbe bonest olddarkie got up and went to work at break of day, with a full stomach, good comfortable cloth ing on bis back, good shoes on liis icet, a heart as light und hiqipy as tbe lark, and making the welkin ring with his merry- songs. When the day’s work was over he “laid down the shovel and the hoc,” went to his comfortable log cabin, ate tbe whole some supper furnished him by bis kind old master and then lighted bis pipe, look down bis banjo, and played, sung and danced until tbe boil rang for him to go to bed. Good, kind old master furnished him with every thing necessary for bis comfort, and as be had no cares he could sleep soundly. Alas! be canot siug aud dance with the name zest now. He has ao old master to furnish him with food and raiment; no kind mistress to take care "of him when he gets sick; no com fortable cabin to live in; no'thick clothing to shield him from storms; no banjo to pick, and bis heart is so heavy be cannot siug and dance. Candidly, wc have not heard of a real old fashioned negro frolic since the pool darkey was set free. \. , The Evansville (Ind.) Courier tells the story of an orphan girl who lost her father dnriDg the war, and visited that city recently in search of a home. Stie could not tell where her relations lived. When her father died she bad fallen into the handsof a person who had been very cruel to her. The gen- . lletnan to whom she applied tor n borne at Evansville, knew a wealthy lady in Posey county bearing a name which the girl re membered as that ot an aunt. The lady being notified, visited tbe city; a mutual recogui lion was tbe consequence, and the naked and homeless orphan was immediately provided with fine clothing, and taken home by tbe aunt.
