The Dailv News and Herald,
WEDNESDAY MORNING. D£CEMBgB12^iaC6^
The Condition of Trixie.
The present dullness of trade is an evil,
but it is anecessary evil, and as such it is
the natural result of the expansion of the
currency and the reckless speculations whien
it encouraged. We warned business men
soon after the collap'se of the rebellion, and
from that time on, that the high pressure
principle was unsafe, and that there was sure
to be a reaction sooner or later which would
premium from the extreme depression
immediately followed the surrender of the
rebel arnries, and the steady inflation ot the
currency by the issue of national bank notes
at the rate of some three millions a week, en
couraged all sorts of speculations, and the
voice of prudence was laughed down as great
prolits rolled in.
So far as manulacturers wew; Concerned,
especially in the department ot dry goods,
they increase their productions ol cheap
fabrics far beyond the wants of the market.
They depeuded upon a heavy demand Irom
the South, in which they have been disap
pointed ; and now, when we have reached
the summit of inflation, and begin the de
scent towards solvency, the market is flooded
with goods which cannot be sold at any price,
and the only way that the manutaetdrers see
out. of the difficulty is to suspend production
and thus cause a scarcity to keep up prices.
This is the condition .of trade, in woolen
goods particularly, the market being over
burdened with both domestic and foreign
productions. The trade in cotton goods i t
not quite so bad. The .supply ot the best
qualities is not excessive, and.these are held
with considerable firmness; but low ami
medium qualities are in excessive supply,
and in these prices have betsu docked oil
'without mercy. Meanwhile a good deal <(i
busiuess has been done on credit within flic
last year, and the dullness of trade through
out the year has made collections slow.—
This causes a feeling of uncertainty to pre
vail throughout the country, inimical to. pro
duction and legitimate trade, and the Secre
tary of the Treasury is appealed to on all
sides to come to the rescue of high prices by
arresting the contraction of the currency. ■ Ii
he should do this—which we do not believe,
lie will—there would be monetary relief, and
we should go on perhaps-through another
season ot fictitious prosperity, again to be
inevitably brought *np all standing when
contraction comes, as it must coftie sooner
or later. Will it pay to play this farce -any
longer? While the currency is inflated all
values are unstable, and neither capital nor
labor is sure of its reward. Legitimate en
terprises are delayed, and speculation rules
the hour. IVe want a financial policy on
the part of the Government which nmybe
depended ou for a year in advance by busi
ness men, so that they make their calcula
tions ahead. This subject claims the earliest
attention of Congress, because every day s
delay hinders the prosperity and content
ment of the people. We must move on to
wards specie payments, and as rapidly as
possible, but we must make that progress l>y
regular approaches, and not by sudden sor
ties.—Bouton Herald, Dei-. 1th.
Hobrible Murder in Florida-’-—A liieud
at Palatka has furnished us with an account
of the most cold blooded and deliberate mur
der it has ever been nur melancholy duly In
chronicle- The facts are briefly these: Mr.
William B- Stevens, Sheriff of Putnam coun
ty, and ex-officio tax assessor and collec
tor, attended an appointment on Thursday,
the 29th nit., at John Register’s for the pur
pose of receiving the Slate and comity tax
from the citizens of i hat precinct. About -I
P. M- he left for Palatka on horseback,
taking with him what money be bad col
lected, supposed to he between two anil three-
hundred dollars- On the Monday following
his body was found about uvo miles from
Register's, pierced in the breast by a rifle or
pistol ball,-and his pockets rifled ami robbed
of the money. Our informant states thai
Mr. Stevens ha 1 been induced to Havel an
unfrequented way. Ilis horse had been
hitched, and so remained for some days,
until found. The shock to the family was
•very great, as tlje first intimaiiou they had
of their loss was the arrival of the bo'dy in
their midst- Mr- Stevens was a highly re
spectable citizen, and his loss will be deeply
felt, not only by his immediate friends but
lhe entire community—Jacksancilte (Flu.)
