Hassell. 7 evening last, according to notice, a of firemen congregated at the Central rjroad depot to wolcomj the Hon. P. M. Russell pie. Mr. Russell has been untiring In his efforts to ■is the bill for the reorganization of the fire depart- ut oil a white basis, and hence this demonstration his return. As soon as the train reached tho de- t, that gentleman was enthusiastically welcomed, (1 passing through the ranks, was escorted to his sideuce. The firemen and a lew invited guests, among whom epresentatives of the press, then par- , aud tho first t6aat being the health of that gentleman responded, thanking his for this manifestation of their approval of hiB d conduct as tlieir representative. He gave a ry ol the passage of the bill through the House of | Representatives and its subsequent defeat in the | ^euatc. and was particularly sovere on the Senator from Chatham county. In tho course of his remarks the speaker alluded to tho press of the city in very warm terms, and concluded by toasting it. The toast was responded to by Messrs. Withington, Lamotte aud others, who were severally greeted with Joiul applause. S. Yates Levy, Esq., being present, was callod upon and responded. He gave a thorough history of tho Firemen's bill as presented to the Legislature, and *..id that after the objections of the Senator were Known, the bill was remodelled in a manner to meet those objections. The speaker was also sovere on the action of the Senator. Ho bid the firemen to be of coed cheer. It was said that Council had the right to reorganize the lire department, aud if so it should bo denc before a great while. Mr. Smith, the member from Clinoh county, was introduced to the assemblage as a warm supporter of tho bill, and made a brief speech in acknowledgment ol the plaudits of the company. Several other gentlemen were called upon and re sponded, aud at au early hour the company retired. Mayor's Court. On Saturday morning three more negroes wore arraigned beforo His Honor, Mayor Anderson, on the charge of violating ordinances i>y driving through tho hr.cs. They were all evidently ignorant of tho law, and were fined hut two dollars each, with the city portion of the fine remitted. Tho officers have orders to put a stop to this business, and wagoners had better take notice. Wm. Kelly, Wm. Newcomb, and B. McGlvliu, three sailors, were charged with fighting at a bar-room on the Bay. They wore each fined five dollars, and the bar-room ordered under the aurveillanco of the police. duo. Roberts and Robert A. Shargley, two men re cently from New York, and paid to belong to the roughs, were charged with robbing a witness of $850. After bearing the evidence, His Honor decided to turn the matter over to the County Court. Ueury Hicks, a negro, was charged with having load ot wood in his possession ut a very early hour in the morning, supposed to have been stolen. Henry offered another negro, Jacob Adams, as a witness, but failing to make it plain where ho got the wood, lie was committed, with the other negro,*for further examina tion. M. Gordon was charged with being drunk and dis orderly in the streets, and with resisting the officer, lie was fined eight dollars, or tQ serve twenty days on the public improvements. Enoch Miller, a negro, was arraigned on the charge of firing a pistol in the yard attached to tho Gulf Rail* road depot. From the evidence it appoared that the defendant and another negro had a difficulty, which the prisoner wanted to settle according to the code of honor. His opponent had not exactly the same amouut of courage and refused, when Milior fired the pistol aud threatened to kill. He was fined ten dollars tf to serve thirty days at labor. A Negro Shot. On SaturJay night last, about 6 o’clock, a negro nanio i Alex. Hicks was 9hot by another negro, sup posed to be Richard Murray. The allair occurred in a lane oil Randolph street, in the vioinity of the City Magazine. The body lay on the lot where the murder was committed until about 2 o’clock yesterday alter- noon. The Coroner, Dr. Myers, being sick, applica tion was made to several Justices of the Peace, each of whom refused to act. His Honor, Mayor Edward 0 Anderson, then requested Mr. Thomas S. Wayne, City Marshal, to perforin the duty of Coroner, and af ter considerable trouble tho Marshal summoned the following jurors: T. McLaughlin, foreman; James Monaghan, A. Ponce, John Welsh, Henry Calvin, Hogan, R. McGloine.M. McCatf, John Shohan, William Clary, Luke Doyle and M. McGlonc. The inquest was held at a house on Randolph street. There was bnt one witness to be found, and he did not seem to know much about the matter, more than that Murray had fired the shot. The witness stated that the deceased aud himself had been working to gether, aud upon making their way home they met the negro, Richard Murray, who said: “Lookout, am going to shoot.” The pistol was fired, and imme diately the deceased fell, exclaiming that he was shot; he (the witness) thought deceased was joking, and ran and picked him up. He said there bad been no pre vious quarrel between tho men, and they had not met before that afternoon. He did not know mnch about the negro who fired the shot. The jury, after deliberating a short time, rendered a ^rdict “that the deceased, Alex. Hicks, came to Ms death by a gun-shot wound at the hands of Richard Murray, and that the act was wilfully done.” Murray had made his escape, and efforts are being made to capture him, but they had not been success ful up to last evening.
