A fkir for the benefit of tho male' orphan* th *io «barg® of the ladle* of ib« v Catholic Church in this city was opened in St. Andiewt* HsU yesterday after- The ladies upon whom tins charity haa devoured, in a time of peculiar' pressure, have been indefatigable in making the most of their small meant the promotion of so worthy a purpose, and have for sale and raffle a fine collection of articles usually offered on auch occasions. The'beneflciares, orphan boys, are entirely dependent on the protection of these ladies, and we feel that an appeal on their behalf the benevolent public of Savannah will, as hereto fore, be responded to in a liberal spirit. The fair will be open every afternoon and night during the week, when the ladles will be pleased to receive the visit* and aid of the friends of the helpless orphan. The attendance last night was not wbat might be expected, but as the season advances will probably be much better. Great taste has been displayed in the arrangement of the goods, which are of every variety and reflect credit upon the lady managers. The first table upon the left is fitted up with fruit and pound cakes of almost every style, the whole neatly arranged, and the table is presided over by Mrs. Cercopely. Next wo find the table of Miss Dillon and Mrs. Goil- martin, which contains a little of everything, both useful and ornamental. Ladies can find articles of embroidery and fancy work, while gentlemen can ob tain almost any article they fancy. Noticeable among the articles is a Colt's six-shooter shot gun, manufac tured and brought here expressly by Mr. S. Colt, the famous manufacturer. Another is a magnificent liquor stand, tho chances for which are nearly all full. Then again there is a handsome China puuch bowl, with ladle and cups. The greatest feature, however, of this stand is a full set of blank books manufactured by Mr. George B. Clarke, in charge of the bindery of our friend, Mr. Geo. N. Nichols, of the Advertiser, who has kindly donated them to the managers of the fair. The books are got up in an elegant manner, and re flect much credit upon the donor and the workman.. Next will be found the table of Mrs. McMahon and Davis, conspicuous on which we find a splendid portrait of the hero, Gen. Lee. It'also contains many articles suitable fbr the holiday season. The next table, which is the largest, is presided over by Mrs. Dr. Bead, assisted by numerous ladies, and contains a great variety of articles, among which are a splendid saddle and bridle, innumerable doll babies, one ot which, a little girl doll, was trimmed with green, and holds in her hand the symbol of Ire land, “Erin go Bragh.” There is algo a large toy aud doll house which, numerous youngsters are certaiu of winning. Then we have another cake stand, nicely decorated, in the centre of which is a large doll, dressed in bridal robes, the chances for which were freely taken by tho bachelors present. This is in charge of Miss Heuder son, assisted by Mr, A. Fernandez. Lastly, though by no means the least attractive, is the supper table, presided over by Mrs. Henderson. One thing that would add much to the pleasure of visitors, and aid them in spending their spare change for this truly eharitablc purpose, is musie, and wo are glad to say that at the suggestion of tha reporters, Messrs. Maas and Ruckert have kiudiy volunteered to devote a few hours of any two evenings the committee may desire. There arc other musicians in Savannah, and why may wo not havo music every evening There Is nothing which would tend more to loosen the clasps of the pocket books, of the gentlemen, while it wonld lend a still brighter smile to the faces of the lady managers. Larceny of Wood, Henry Hicks was on Saturday charged before His Honor, Mayor Andersou, with having a load of wood in'hia possession at four o’clock in the morning, which was supposed to have been stolen. The evidence then not being'satisfactory, the case was postponed until yesterday morning, and Jacob Adams, a volun teer negro witness, was held as an accomplice.- The officers had tried to ferret out the matter, but could hardly arrive at the truth of It. From all that could be learned on the trial, the negro Adama had hired Hloka to diaw the load from the canal and he did so. Adams produced a pap r from a white woman giving him permission to cut wood on her place, but the officer said he found the woman and that she denied giving the negro permission. They were each fined five dollars. Savannah, December 17th, 18G0. To the Reporter of "Locale" for the News cf- Herald : In your report of cases, one of which is headed “A Negro Shot,” you Bay "The Coroner, Dr. Myers, being sick, application was made to several Justices of the Peace, each of whom refused to act.” Now, sir, this is not the case. Justice Staley was absent from the city ; Justice Smith would have aoted had he not been taken siok, Constable Jones having summoned Chas. Thompson, Michael Goodwin, J. K. Burts, Henry Smith, John Cash, aud Gleason, as J urors to set upon the Inquisition at 3>i o'clock P.
