He waa 1 tea Joll. • to In* confiued at labor for thirty ▲ man namad Btrannan waa before *Hia Honor, MayorAndetaoc* yeater day, on the charge of aeUiog liquor without a license. AH officer said that ha found a man coming out of the defendant's honae with a bottle of whiskey. The man who had the whiskey waa examined and said he had been gunning, and going into the store, got two cigars. He then asked for something to warm him and got a drink of whiskey, after which he asked for some in a bottle to take ont to his friends. He said he paid the defendant fifty cants for the whole. The defendant denied selling whiskey, and said that the man was cold and he gave him some; that he took the fifty *canta in pay for the cigars. Hte produced several of his neighbors who said they had known him for m knag time, and had been in the store frequently, bnt never kDew. of him selling liquor. One of the witnesses said that on one occasion he had sent for liquor and got it, but the money was sent back to him. There appearing a doubt in the case, His Honor siid he would give the defendant the benefit of that doubt, and dismissed the case upon the payments of coats. Mrs. Camp was charged with the tame offence. One of the witnesses said he had bought liquor from the woman three months ago, and had seen a negro get 9ome the other day. When asked why he did not give information when he bought the liquor, he said it waa because she had been informed on. Another witness, the wife of the former one, was more ex plicit, and said it was because her husband's horse and cart had been seized for nine dollars that the prosecution was instituted at this time. This witness created much amusement by giving a full detail of tier grievances in broken English. The paosecutiou appeared to be a malicious one on the part of the witness, but the defendant did not deny the selling liquor without license. She was fined in costs and ordered to take out her license im mediately. Throwing Fiitli from Window's. Complaints are often made of the throwing of offal aud other filth from windows into the streets and lanes, and the officers seem desirous of putting a stop to it. In tho police court yesterday morning Mr. S. B. Harrington, proprietor of the Pavilion Hotel, cor ner of South Broad and Bud stroets, was arraigned on this charge. The defendant appeared through his clerk, and on the charge being read, the officer said that he observed a negro throwing slops out of a win dow frouling the play ground of the Chatham Acade my. Upon an examination he found under the win dow some several inches of stuff whiAi had been de posited in that manner. He immediately Informed Mr. Harrington, and asked him to have it cleaned up. A couple of ntgroes were sent to do the work, who swept a little and then retired. The officer then said to the proprietor that cleaning would not do and he would have to put him on the docket. His Honor, Mayor Anderson, then remarked to the representative of the defendant that he himself had noticed the transaction, and that it was really dis graceful. Tho wing of this, house fronts on the ground attached to the Academy, aud this throwing of slops out oi the windows is a constant source of an noyance to tho officers, besidos being a nuisance. The matter has been repeatedly spoken of, and at one time, we betieve, it was contemplated to have some of the windows closed up entirely. The defendant was fined ten dollars and costs. The boys had better bo earefal in firing their squibs and fireworks in the streets. It is a violation of ordi nance, and the police officers have positive instiuc- tioua to arrest all offenders. In the Mayor’s Court yesterday morning, a gentle man was arraigned on Uie charge of discharging rockets from his window. The officer statod it was at night, and as near as he could discern the rocket came from tho Window of this gentleman’s residence. The defendant said he knew nothing of the matter, that there were no fireworks in his house, and he was anrs none had been fired from it. The officer, in reply to a question of His Honor, stated that he might have been mistaken as to the house, bat thought not. The esse was then dismissed and the officer directed to find the guilty party. Jaa. Green and J. Black, two negro boys, were sr- raignod for firing squibs in the street. They had only fired one cracker each, according to their statement. They were fined iu costs. Inquest. Dr. R. P. Johnson, who was drowned on the 31st of Novciuoer by tho upsetting of a boat below Fig Island. He also held an inquest at O’Byrue’s wharf on the body of an unknown negro, found floating in the river.
