The Dailv News and Herald. THURSDAY MORNING. DECEMBf^ 20, HM- Lady Julia. Lady Jalia sits in a gay boudoir, All lacker, and buhl, and ormolu. And taps with her foot on the “tutted floor. As dainty maidens are apt to do. As dainty maidens are wont to do When the last dear pet has untimely died, Or the last new novel hau had too tew • “Sensation” scenes, and been laid.aside. But the lady Julia has laid aside No novel, forsooth ; for no thought has she, Except that to-morrow she’ll be a bride. Though she loves not the husband that is to be. She loves not her husband that is to be, For he's ugly and old; but rich withal; And bis weal4h is the saving clause, you see, The velvet cushion to break her fall. But the velvet cushion that breaks her fall May smother her yet, in the course of time. When the love he bears her grows weak and small, Some few mouths after the weddiug-chimo. Some few months after the weddiug-chime, When she has swallowed the gilded pill, And supped the bitterness of her-orime. She’ll think of one who ia weak and ilL She’ll think of one who is weak and ill. Who’s dying/perhaps, for her fickle sake; But who, tliougb she’s false and frivolous, still Will bless her, aye, ti|l his heart doth break. Will bless her, aye, till his heart doth break; For a man may die of a broken heart, Who life and liberty—all, can stake Ou a woman who playeth the traitor's part. [From the Omaha (Neb.) Herald.] Fort C. F. Smith, ) • Big Horn River. Oct. 24,18G6. 1 We are having a lively time tvith the Sioux* Chey enne and Arrapalio Indians. The location- of Forts Phil. Kearney and C. F. Smith on their immediate hunting ground will not be permitted without a des perate struggle. The immigration for Montana, which has been heavy, has suffered severely. No train has passed the road without losing men and slock. Large parties have ravaged the road lroratne North Platte to the Yellow Stone river, a distance of four hundred and fifty-eight miles. They have even penetrated the mines in Montana, murdering miners and driving off stock. Large delegations of them have visited the Crow Indians—their bitter enemies—and endeavored to make peace with them, in order to involve them in "" the war against the whites. They also visited the Flat Head and, Nos Perces Indians for the same purpose, but without success. A party of miners, under Jell Stamford, were attacked, and eighteen out of sixty were killed. This happened on Wind river, one hun dred miles above us, in the mountains. Another party were attacked on Tongue river, near the wagon’ road, and Col. Rich and another man were killed. All miasrs have now returned to Virginia City. Three soldiers aud tvu citizens have been killed and scalped within a mile of this post recently. -Three men were killed on the Yellow Stone.about the same time. Twp weeks ago a train loaded with government freight was attacked, and one man killed and twer wagons captur ed. The same outfit, ou returning, near Phil. Kear ney, was again attacked,’the two owners killed, and nearly all the stock taken away. One hundred and fifty head of mules, fifty head o! horses and sixty head of beef cattle have been stolen from Phil. Kearney. Also, Jim Carter, hay con- hearty one tractor, lost three hundred and sixty-five head ot f osttle. This post is “cleaned out.*’ The Indians took the stock in daylight, while grazing almost within rifle shot of the stockade. Previous to this, at the same place, seventy head of Goverqment mules were run off, and six men killed. One officer of the Eighteenth was killed on Crazy Woman's Fork. From this point down to the Platte, the road is a graveyard. On tho 17th inst. a paxfy of twenty-live soldiers, re turning.from Fort Benton, where they had escorted General Hazen, when within forty miles of this fort, were attadfcedty sixty Indians. Mr. Brannore, guide, wasjtilled and Scalped. The party fonght eight hours. The following day, Indians attacked troops engaged in cutting wood, and ran off six head of horses. They are committing all sorts of depredations with impu nity. We have only twenty mounted men at the post About one hundred and fifty men have been killed as far as known. We have had no intelligence from Phil. Kearney for sixty days, aud fear that all com munication is cut off. Three commissary trains have been due fora month, aud are supposed to have been captured. The Crow Indians report fifteen hundred lodges of hostile Indian? moving towards this post for the purpose of capturing it They call our eoldiers “old women,” aud say they cannot fight Medical. As a funeral procession, accompanied by the mem bers of a lodge of German Odd Fellows, in full dress, and a band ot music, were passing tho play grounds of our East side public school, a few days since, dur ing the recess, a large number of students, old and young, attracted by the music aud display, went down near the procession to witness the proceedings, while the teachers surveyed the affair from the school house windows. Now, it appears that there is a boundary line estab lished somewhere on those school-house play-groundi over which, if a student goes during school hours, « punishment is the result. At the close of the recess the scholars were examined in relation to their knowledge of this rule, and those so unfortunate to be unaware of the existenc j of such a regulati _ were arraigned Tor punishment and whipped, under the superintendence of the principal, the assistants in the various rooms administering the flogging m tliuir several departments. Young ladies, who have prided themselves through out their school days on obeying the rule* of school heretofore, held out their hands, received the lashing, went home and humiliatingly confessed that they had been whipped; while many qf the younger girls were compelled to raise the skirts of their dresses, while the teachers whipped them on the calves of their legs. And so the majesty of the law was vindicated, and ♦he students will know tho boundary lines of the playgrounds at tha East school hereafter.—Juror (lit.) Herald. Capital. .•900,000 Consumption of Tobacco in Europe.—In the city of Hamburg, Germany, the manufacture of tobacco gives employment to more than 10,000 persons, who turn out 150,000,000 cigars a year, valued at $2,000,000. From Havana and Manilla, Hamburg imports 18.0U0,- 000 cigars a year, making an aggregate, including its own production, of 168,000,000 cigars, 153,000,01*0 or which are exported, leaving 15,000,000 for home con sumption—allowing 40,000 cigars a day to an adult male population of 45,000. In England, with a population of 21,000,000 in 1821, the consumption of tobacco was 15,598,152 pounds, an average of 12 ounces per head for the entire popula tion; in 1831, with a population of 24,410,439, thq qon sumption reached 19,533,841 pounds, or 13 ounces per head, aud in 1841, with a population of 27,019,672, the consumption was 22,300,360 pounds, or 13>£ ounces per head; and in'1831, with a population of 27,452.692, the oonsnmptiou was 28,062,841 pounds, or 17 ounces <6f tobacco per head, showing a steady increase. In France, the consumption of tobacco is 18 ounces per head, nearly half of which is snuffed. t)enmark, H is'70 ounces per head. In Beigium, avenges about 73ounces per head, and in Turkey the consumption i^ even greater. Enough money is consumed in Tobacco smoke throughout Christendom annually to ensure the speedy civilization and Chris tianization of heathendom, were it turned in that di rection, instead of being spent as it i3, in smoke.
