Poor old St Mary’s," one involuntarily exclaims, aa the monumental-like chimneys point out the spot where pleasant dwellings stood, whece happy families lived in peace, plenty and contentment. It Was a ruthless act of ruinous war to have burned a defence less and deserted town, and the reprobation of the Northern press at the time this place and Darien were destroyed, I am told by Northern gentlemen, was very general and severe against such savage barbarities. But all of St. Mary’s was not burned. Singular providences seemed to epare from shells aod the torch. Oo one occasion, after it had been set on fire so that the wind, blowing the flame and cinders, might make a.dean sweep of the whole place, a sudden and tremendous' rain storm extinguished the flames, and tiod defeated the purposes of Man. A small red house is still standing alone, in the midst of the burnt district, and was pointed out to me with this strange narrative: In that bo.use,.at the time of the firing of the town, there was living a bed-ridden old man and his wife, a most excellent old lady and pious member of the Baptist Church. She could not, or would not, leave when the devouring element began its work of ruiu, but as it came sweeping on she began pray ing most earnestly and faithfully to God, believing that He could and would save her house. And He did! On every side stood the chimneys of other bouses, but her hum ble home is there yet to show that the ef fectual fervent prayer of the righteous availeth much. • But St. Mary’s is too beautiful aud health ful a location to be deserted. Some of its old inhabitants have returned to their homes, remaining uninjured. Others have come information asPto whether ho CHRISTMAS. The French Admiral in China issued a notification declaring the river Zcrul in Corea in a state of block ade trow October 15lli, owing to the recent murder of french missionaries. by rebuilding on the site of former steam mills, new, enlarged and improved structures Messrs. Burns, FoX & Lippman show wbat' pure Southern enterprise and capital can do, even after a total prostration of tljp finances of the country—the burning of their old machinery and buildin of their old mill. These gentlemen—one of them a well known fellow citizen of 8avannah—have had splendid double gang saw mill in operation lor more than a year past They have in process of construction auother, upon even a larger scale, with planer, aud other such machines connected with the mill. They have already sent millions of feet of lumber and timber to various portions of the world; three large vessels were loading at their mill at the time of our visit, aud orders were on hand from France, Spain, England and the West Iodies. They have given employment to hundreds of the citizens of Camden county. In fact,' one gentleman remarked to me, their mills and those of one or two others, though much smaller ones, on the North river and St. Ilia, were supporting the county. One point of special interest is that Sa vannah has no small part in this. Southern enterprise. Oar very worthy and staunch citizen, Mr. Robt. Lachlison constructed, in his extensive foundry, the engine and ma chinery of both these large double gang saw mills. And it speaks no small praise to his mechanical skill and fidelity that one mill has been running for over a year without a day’s loss from fault of engine or machinery Sucli men do well for themselves and well for the country, and long may they flourish, Of course such works us these cause stores to spring up in the place, and other improve ments follow.. It would be pleasant to describe the beau tifnl locations for residences, the solemu and impressive live oat cemetery, and speak a word or two about the old inhabitants and good people of St. Mary s, but lot those hold a tender regard for “ The days of Auld-lang- syne” who remember the past, while we labor in the.ptfigent and hope for the future Visitor. An Ominous Prediction.—The late Lord Macaulay, i May, 1857, wrote a letter to H. L. Randall, of Now York, iu which he expresses his earnest convictions In relation to tue future of the United States. He Baid : It is quite plain that your government, will never be aub- to restrain a distressed and discontented majori ty For with you the majority is the government, and Lm tho rich, who are always a minority, absolutely at its mercy. * * *.... .. 1 seriously apprehend that you will, in some such sea- *ou as i have described, do things which will prevent prosperity from returning; that you will act uiea people who should in a year of scarcity devour all the Bted coru, and thus make the next yt»c * y®* 1 * °f »-ardty, but of absolute famine. The is looked forward to with no little interest. Negro Suffrage in the District of Colum bia—Flans of tile lladicals. The Washington papers state that the Radicals and freednien in that city are jubi lant over the passage of the law conferring suffrage upon the negro. The great body of white citizens are much depressed by the success of the measure, aud some few are not backward in expressing their dissatisfac tion. The negroes say they intend to select gayles J. Bowen, now Postmaster of that city, as their candidate for Mayor, aud two years hence they will put up one of their own race as their candidate for that office. The Constitutional Union, of Saturday last, gives vent to its" feelings ou the recent and contemplated action ot Congress as follows •‘By a vote of 32 to 13, ike Seuate of oar factional Congress have passed ike bill conferring the riglit or suffrage upon tho negro IS the .District ol Columbia, while excluding those who were engaged in tho late civil war on the side ol the Confederate States. In our article of Thursday ou -Univer. al amnesty aud universal suffrage," we showed what the policy of the Radicals bad been from the inception of their party, aud that their various plans and schemes for t he re storation Of the country were as false as themselves— concocted only to deceive—advocated only to betray. The passage ot this hill shows that our remarks were true—that our prediction will be shortly verified, un less the people rise in their might against the insanity and dishonesty of the legislation of this Radical fac tional Congress. . •*l’he ignorant and degraded negroes of the Dis trict, numbering thousands, who cmie here from the Southern slave SUtes—thousands who were kid napped by Massachusetts dealers in human blood, underthe name of bounty brokers, and sold in this District—all these imvo, so far as the action af this factional Senato is concerned, the right to vole. But white men—a large, intelligent and energetic class— who acted as their conviciious of duty (mistaken thouch they were) prompted them, white men are to he excluded. This is another step. towards the erec tion of a Y inkee aristocracy upon the ruins of the Be- nubUc. A few weeks more, aud, so far as this factional Congress can do it, tbe Southern States will be re duced to provinces—the whites dislranclnsed—aud then the next step will be the disfranchising of Dem ocrats iu the North. Those who wero called ‘ Peace Democrats” will first experience the effects ot lankee legislation. Then all classes of Democrats. Then gradually the people of the country, no matter what their political sentiments, until New Lnglond alone '« the governing power." Hon.
