An administrator qualified in December, 1864. The
personal property, consisting of household and
kitchen furniture, was sold in order to pay funeral
expenses, doctor’s bills, Ac. The sale took place in
December, 1864, aud the property brought a most ex
travagant price in Confederate money, to wit: $16,-
603 36. The administrator paid off all the debts (oonq
being since presented), aud there was left in his hand#*'
the sum of $12,284 20 on the 1st of April, 1865. He
filed a bill iu Judge Meredith’s Court asking how this
balance should be liquidated. With the facts above
stated before him, and the additional fact that in or
dinary times, say iu 1850 or 1860, the proceeds of the
sale of tho furniture would have been barely more
than sufficient to pay the debts which the admini&t
trator paid, the Judge decided, aud very’ properly too,
think, that, as the administrator had the right to
retain it in his |kands for a longer period, and as it
could not have been invested or distributed or further
used in the payment of debts, and as the Confederacy
tell within four months after his qualification, and
before it was practicable to obtain an order for thein-

The difficulty between tbe President of Bogota and

ranged.
The steamer Arctic, from Australia, with dates of
Nov. 1st, had arrived at Panama on the 6th. Com
mercial affairs were in a very unsatisfactory condi
tion. Sevorvl large houses and many small ones had
failed, the liabilities amounting in the aggregate to
about half mi’.'iou sterling. Messrs. WD'inkst

with Boston, Valparaiso aud CrPl'oruia, a-e among
the number. The feeling was that the crisis liud

The “Defiant South.”—While Thad. Stevens and
bis accomplices at Washington—men for the mort
part, made wealthy by the war—are daily coming out
ol “prayer meetings’’ to propose new measures for
trampling still more completely undei foot the “de
fiant South,” here is the picture which is drawn of
that section by one of the journals most helplessly at
tached to their political car:
‘Dr. Crawford, of Kentucky, who has recently
visited the States further South, makes some very
painful statements about their condition of destitu
tion and prostration. He begs the churches of the
North to inquire into tbe facts, and come to the relief
of their suffering brethren in the South. In Alabama
there are twenty thousand widows and sixty
thousand orphans, most of whom are dependent. In
Cporgfa, it is said, there are fifty thousand persons
ho must receive aid. Dr. Crawford says that promi-
•ul people in the South- have been withheld from
proclaiming the misery around them, “because bad
vi-n some calling themselves Christians, have
!-eady gloried in the hope of seeing tho ‘Southern
.-hivalry’ begging for bread.”
wv any such “Christians” among ns? If so
how must their noble hearts rejoice iu the thought
that an odd million or so of their fellow-creatures will
keep this holy season of Christmas now at hand in
rags and tamiue, in order that a party of “great moral
ideas” may secure itself another four years’ lease of
iu the federal capital!—AVm> York World.
