The Thomasville Enterprise, of Hic.iiiub iust., noticing, with its usual clearness of com prehension. the remarks recently made by us relating to the importance of the railroad project designed to connect Thomasville with Albany, speaks as follows: We "copy till- following from the Sayaunah II kuaui, of the Ifib iust.,-in reference to the i.ivoriie p : *»i*‘*'t of the people of this section, aud return »uir thanks to the UmtALD for the handsome manner in w-hicli it lias presented the subject to the citizens oi Savannah. Whatever may he said against the South Georgia A Florida Railroad by its enemies, all well informed men, here aud in Savauuah, know very well, teat whatever benelits it may confer upon Thomasv iiie, or other towns in this section, the great aggregate m wealth accruing from it will be centered on the city of Savannah. Therefore, her people are deeply inter ested in it, and should hasten to give us all the aid iu their power. Our citizens, as well as those of V' iteliell and Baker counties, are in earnest about tiiis road, and ere long thev will demonstrate it by deeds as well as words. We have a letter from an influential gen tleman in Mitchell county, who assures ns that i’iOO.OUO can be obtained in that sevtiou to the stock of the Company, aud this with the $300,000 in Thomas will at once place us above the necessity of aid from any quarter. We have seen so much and argued so ear nestly iu behalf of the immediate complet ion of the enterprises projected to advance i he interests of" our city in connection with those of the most productive and interesting .sec tions of Georgia and Florida, that we hesi tate to say more in reference thereto, lest we become offensively iinporluuato. Hut we are so well pleased with the lively manifesta tions of public interest in legard to a matter of such paramount importance that, we cannot forbear from indulging in some addi tional comment. We believe that the people of Savannah aud of Southwest Georgia are so fully alive to the importance pi perfecting the railroad communications now contemplated, that it only remains to decide upon the proper channel in which to direct their efforts. This city, especially, desires to complete this net work of railroad in which her present and prospective .prosperity are so dec-ply in volved, at the earliest period practicable; aud thus secure her position as the railroad centre of a vast extent of country null pre vent the construction of roads passing by her to the north and east, over which the rich produce would llow, attracting from and driving into this onward current or tiafticbor own capital, while she would remain but an idle spectator of the growing wealth and im portance of rival cities. Tlie, Thomasville and Albany Hoad and the Atlantic and Gulf Koad, completed to its western terminus, will possess as mfiny element's oi' success as any other south of ttic Potomac, and we ven ture to predict that in live years after their completion the population of Savannah -would he doubled, and any subscription she might make ceased to he a burden and become a source of large revenue. We are geographically so situated that, if we ex ert our intellects, exercise our vigilance and energy, and employ liberally and judiciously such capital as we have or cau command, we can outstrip all competitors, and neutralize and frustrate jjl combinations against 11s. That there are combinations against us which place the interests of this . city in jeopardy is now well known to the business men and to all reflecting men in this community, and of tips we give our real estate holders fair notice aud admonish them to take warning. We hear of neW projects to divert our traile, and some of our sister cities are willing aud aux- ious to accomplish schemes to conduct our legitimate commerce into external avenues. Under these circumstances it becomes us all to arouse ourselves aud make a determined and concerted effort with our friends iu West Georgia} for self-preservation. Get us all go to work intelligently and in earnest to build up a great commercial centre, which, in process of time, would curich all .its tributary communities. This should aud must be done. Now,-then, shall Savannah and the dis trict of country which before the w:u- pro duced more than a third of all the cotton raised in. Georgia be brought together within seventeen hours by railrosd ? It so, let our merchants, capitalists, and real estate holders, n conjunction with the communities referred to by the Enterprise, at once take hold of the work. Savannah can select from among her financial aud railroad meu. three or four of the best talent and strictest integrity, and (he other communities an equal number, to meet together and consult and plan for the success of the great object in view. “Adopt this or a better plan, and the most skeptical will cease to doubt its success and look for ward with sanguine expectation to the ^rirh harvest which will be reaped iu a few years. If we fail to pursue this policy, our word for it, we shall have to struggle not only to get more trade and travel, but to keep wlmt we have, and save ourselvep;front serious com mercial damage. [Tran the TkDahaawf BeutineL] Savannah—Am Important Fnet. Most earnestly Have we labored to con vince oat planters and merchants that, in the long run, they would save money by making their purchases in Savannah, instead of New York'- And because of the frequen cy and earnestness of our appeals in this -be half we have been voted over-zealous; and other than disinterested motives were as signed lor our warm “Savannah espousals. The logic oi stubborn _/<»**. n ? w attests the truth of our statement- Within the past ten days we have talked with several promi nent merchants of Tallahassee who have iust returned from a tnp to Savannan. They all assert that “goods can be bought as cheaply there, now, as in New \ ork. The “logic” of these stubborn facts is working a complete retortion in the trade of this whole section—a revolution which, thank Heaven, is destined, at no distant day, to emancipate us from our thraldom to Northern capital and Northern interests. The day of our deliverance from this worse than Egyptian bondage draweth nigb. Only two days ago we had the verbal assurances of 0110 of the most influential and far seeing merchants of the “Forest City” that Savan nah'was'straining every nerve to inaugurate a system of direct importation that will en able her, next spring, to defy the competi tion of any Northern or Eastern city. It is believed, too, that vessels loaded In European ports will he crowded with nu industrious class of German and other emigrants who will be lauded, direct, at our very doors. The Canaan land in which we live awaits only such a contribution to her industrial resources to make thiB—the richest agricul tural couutry on the face ol the earth—the. most populous aud piosperous also. The inferior and unreliable negro labor of the South will be gradually supplanted by a race of sturdy, houest emigrants, better qunliiieu for citizenship, aud attracting less the class legislation ol a despotic party, rudely bent upon the complete disfranchisement of the white population South, as long as the black remains among us to be contrasted with it iu enfranchisement. We regret that the sjiace which we in tended for Hie elaboration of these thoughts is otherwise occupied to-day.r We can do uo more thau close with the text of so many previous “sermons” on this question ot vital importance, “always patronize South ern instead of Northern cities, and thus assist them in their efforts to open to you the ]>orts of Europe and the markets of the world ’ from EmrojK. Dee. 22.—It la generally under* here that some action will be taken shortly in the United States District Coart of this city in reference to the alleged disregard of the Civil Bights MB by Judge Magrnder, of Anne Arundel oounty. In sen teucing negroes convicted of larceny to be sold in ac cordance with a provision of Uw Maryland Code, provision which has not been repealed since Mary land became a free State. This law, authorising the sale of negrosa aa a pun ishment for crimes, ia claimed to be in direct conflict with the Civil Bights bill, which makes the infliction of any punishment upon blacks other than that pro* scribed for whiles convicted of the same ofieode, a crime to he punished by fine and imprisonment. The matter is attracting considerable attention, and there much speculation as to the coarse likely to be pur sued. The County Covets.- -Under the late law of tho Georgia Legislature amen ling the county court bill, these tribunals will in iu- tnre hold two semi-aumial sessions for crimi nal and civil cases, aud two quarter sessions for jail delivery and criminal cases. Actions of trespass on lauds, possessory warrants and some oilier summary civil cases can he tried at the quarter session. The jurisdic tion has been limited to sums of fifty dollars 1 Juries at quarter sessions to consist of five. Indictments may be waived and a jury trial waived by defendants iu criminal cases, uud the trial proceed before the County Judge. The Georgia An Jmpoktant Decision. State Convention of 18(15 adopted an ordi nance declaring valid private contracts made during the war, and authorizing the courts to adjust the equities between the parlies. The Supreme Court of the Stale has decided that this ordinance does not impair the ob ligations of contracts, but authorizes the ennrts to construe their force aud effect, and determine Uie value of the consideration, uc cording to the equity and the intentiou of the parties.
