we should remember tbe orphans,
them contributions of ham, turkey or confec
tionery, that they make merry and oe glad,
andj for a time may forget that no pa
rent's ham! can minister to their enjoyment.
And then these are other classes of the poor
iu our community who should not be ovei-
looked. Winter is approaching, aud will
soon be upon us with all its distressing evils;
and what is to be regretted, it will find many
here, aud throughout the State, generally
destitute of food aud raiment, and not able
to help themselves and families. There is
always full enough of privation and suffering
among the poor everywhere, but it only needs
a comparatively small increase in tbe avera<
cost of tbe necessaries of lile, or a scarcely
noticeable scarcity of customary employment
to increase that privation aud suffering lar
more than would seem possible to the care
less observer.
It therefore becomes the duty of the Chris
tian portion of our people to direct their spe
cial atteutiou to the wants of the destitute
and helpless. Deliberate, careful, wise and it-
thoughtful charity, will find only too many
opportunities for exertion. It should be
borne iu mind that the worst suffering will
not and cannot come to ns—but our careless
ignorance of its existence will scarcely ex
euse us from our duties towards the sufferers.
The existing charitable organizations are
good enough iu their way, aud most of them
are worthy of a liberal support; but that
charity which goes the farthest accomplishes
the most, aud brings the greatest blessing
with it, is not and cannot bo performed by
proxy. Let every good housewife examine
the family wardrobe between this and New
Year’s day, and lay aside a liberal bundle tor
the needy. Let every bachelor have ready
his east-aside garments for 'tlioso who are
proper objects for charitable attention and ac
tive sympathy. Let everybody consider what
amount of ready funds he can spend to re
lieve the poor mil unfortunate. -No more
gracious or pious duty could now be dis
charged than for those who.have the means
to give liberally of their abundance to lessen,
the sufferings of those upon whom poverty
has laid its cold aud relentless hand. Let
not helpless women, gnawed by hunger, anil
shivering over the dying embers they have
no fuel to replenish, be forgotten. We rall
on those of our citizens who have enonylt,
and some to spare, to put their hands deep
down iu their pockets and help make the
holiday fireside of our poor cheerful and hap
py, aud our word for it, the yule log on their
own holiday tire will blaze the more cheer
ful lor the act. God, religion and humanity
alike demand that the indigent be cared lor
aud their wants supplied.
We invite the attention of our merchants
and tbe vigilant Superintendent of ^the At
lantic and Gulf ltuilroad, to the followiu;
article, taken from the Tallahassee Floridian
of the 25th inst., iu whieh are specifications
of complaints in regard to the shipment aud
transportation of merchandise from this port
to points iu Florida:
Somewhat Disappointed.—Our mercantile
community have been somewhat disappointed
in the realization of all their bl ight autici
pations of the benefits of tbe Live Oak con
nection to our commuuity. There is no rea
son why they should not be realized to the
full; but through the carelessness of some
one, probably the carriers, there is a hiteli
somewhere that is distressing; and is begin
ning to be complained of iu tortus of sev
condemnation. The merchants of Savannah
should see to it that goods for this section
are shipped with promptness aud dispatch.
AVe learn that cars loaded with goods for
this city were switched off at Jasper, on the
Live Oak branch, and allowed to remain
there a week. We “havo also heard com
plaints that gcods for this-place, shipped
from New York to Savannah, are allowed to
lay over iii Savannah, instead of being i
mediately forwarded. We can baldly . 1
lieve the Savannah merchants are wanting
enterprise and foresight to im extent to need
. more than a warning of these things to cause
them to set them right. In a few instances,
- goods could have been shipped to St. Marks
and recei ved as soon as by way of Savannah.
There is no reason why this should be so,
and wo confidently appeal to those whose
interest it is to see that unnecessary delays
are avoided, to look into the matter.
i>y the Atlantic Cable we have a report ol
tbe death, at Miramar, near Trieste, of the
Kmpress Carlotta, of Mexico. This was
the only daughter of the. late Leopold I s
King of the Belgians, hy his second marriage
with Louise, eldest daughter of Louis 1‘hil-
lippe of Orleans, who was King of the
French in the lime between tbe Revoliitious
of July, 1830, and February, 1848. She was
niece, therelore, of the sous ami daughters
of Louis Phillippe, and first cousin to Queen
Victoria, whose mother .was King Leopold’s
sister. The Empress Carlotta was in her
27th year, having been born in June, 4840,
and was married at the age of 17 to the
Archduke Maximilian of Austria. Her late
visit to Europe, with reference to the affairs
of Maximilian, having proved a failure, she
became insane at Rome, from Which city she
was conducted to Miramar, a palace- - belong
iug to her husband, where, it Is reported, her
death took place on tbe 14th. The Empross
Carlotta was renowned for her beauty, aud
for the kindly attributes of her nature, and
her life, previous to the unfoftuuate Mexican
entanglement of her husband, was singularly
happy and peaceful. *

Tin- Admission of Excluded Stale*
The Washington correspondent ot the
Richmond Examiner, under dale of 20lh
inst, says:
A very important movement Is on foot for the ad
mission of excluded States upon the adoption of the
institutional amendment. The Mouth Carohua .Den
ature will Vt-ct-ivo, in a day or two. ample assu
rances I hat SojRitors aud Representatives from that
Slate duly qualified, will ho admitted upon the as
sent ol Unit body to Cougressionsl amemlnlent. Mr;
therbv euioe here a day or two ago as a deputy
m members of the Legislature from Mouth Cain-
i to inquire whether the State would be re
rid ii she-ratified the amendment, there being
tiuoug the members of the Legislature a doubt upon
the subject.
Mr. Wetherby hail a conference with leading Radi
cal Senators and members upon the subject. He re
turned last night, on liis way to Columbia, with satia-
la. lory assurances that tbe State should bo admitted
upon the. terms meutioued. Tho' test oath will, bow
er, exclude perhaps some of those Who were elected
i- tiie Thirty-ninth Congress, and would not take
that oath. It is not certain that Uoveriinr Ferry, or
eiiherol'the senators elect could take it. Hut the
Senate might remove the doubt iu regard to them,
as il did in tbe Patterson case.
lie says also the Radicals are disposed to
yield the extreme conditions of the party if,
as they say, the South will, accept, the
amendment before Uie 4th of March. The
political reasons for this change are
staled thus: “A commercial collapse is
Ureadcd, and will certaiuly occur, if tho ex-
ludcd Slates be not speedily rehabilitated.
To avert this the Radicals will yield much.
The business interests of the country de
mand it- But Congress will yield no more
than to abandon the Stevens Sumner condi
tion of negro suffrage. The people would
not support auy further Radical concession
just now.”

That excellent paper, tbe Monticello (Fla.)

units of this city to its columns as a good
medium through which to communicate with
the large and prosperous community iu which
it is published, says :

bill of goods from Latbrop A. Co , aud it-is

We hope others may be induoed to profit by
his experience.”
We have heal'd the same remark of other
wholesale establishments in Savannah by
merchants from the interior, who, upon ex
amination, found-they could do quite as well
here as in New York or Baltimore, taking
into account the expenses incident to trans
portation. -•
