seemed to possess every one present. Seve

to witness the shifting, magnified the acci-

Finding the lion determined to retain bis

tailed, so far, to effect this upon the terms ol
the Congress amendment. But they attribute
the failure to the prejudices ot men who
constituted the Stale Legislatures. Finding
that those hodies could not be iuflaenced by
measures of leiritorializiition and ot reor

they have another scheme which, it is said,
is to bo proposed after the recess.
They propose an appeal directly to the
body of the people ot the Southern States,
through conventions to be held for the ex
press purpose of considering the amendment.
Congress is thus to renew the same pro
position iu a new mode. Instead of submit
ting the amendment to the State Legislatures,
it will be proposed to take the alternaiive
mode, produced by the fifth article of Hit-
Constitution, and submit to Slate Conven
tions, for ratification by three-fourths ’thereof,
instead of by Legislatures of three-fourths of
the States. “This,” says a Radical organ, “is

THE HON. THOMAS B. FLORENCE.
Washington, January 1,1864.
Gentlemen:—Having stated it verbally to yon, I
have no hesitation in writing the fact, that I experi
enced marked benefit from yon r Hoofland’s German
Jitters. During a lung and tedions session of Con
gress, pressing and onerons duties nearly prostrated
me. A kind friend suggested the use of the prepara
tion I have named. I took his advice, and the result
.vas improvement of health, renewed energy, and
'hat partlcnlar relief 1 so much needed and obtained,
others may be similarly advantaged, if they desire to
■re. Truly your friend, ‘
THOMAS B. FLORENCE.
From Rev. W. D. Seigfried, Pastor of Twelth Baptist
Church.
Philadelphia, December 26.1S63.
iliasus. Jones A Evans,
Gentlemen:—I have recently been laboring auder
the distressing effects of indigestion, aocompuled by
i prostration ofthe nervous system. Numerous rem
edies were recommended by friends and some of them
tested, bat without relief. Yoar Hooflland'sGerman
Bitters were recommended by persons who had tried
them, and whose favorable mention of the Bitters in
duced me also to try them. I most confess that I had
in aversion to patent medicines, from the “thousand
md one" quack “Bitters," whose only aim seems to
ae to palm off sweetened and dragged liquor upon
the community, in s sly way; and the tendency ol
which, I fear, is to make many a confirmed drunkard
Upon learning that yours was really a medicinal
preparation. I took it with happy effect Its action
was not only upon the stomach, but npon the ner
vous system, was prompt and gratifying. I feel that I
nave derived great and permanent benefit irom the
use of a few bottles. Very respectfully yours,
V. G. 8KIGFRKID,
