Mayor’s Court.
In this Court yesterday morning a white man was
charged before His Honor. Mayor Anderson, with in
sulting a witness iu his own house. The witness said
the defendant came into his place, where ho kept a
small co;.bier shop, and asked for something; not be
ing satisfied, he commenced to abuse the plaintiff,
auu among other things, called him a “Dutch thief.*’
Mayor Anderson remarked that this was a subject for
the civil magistrates and not for the Mayor’s Court,
and consequently turned the case over to a inagie-
i.Sle.
A young man, whose face bore evidence of having
cornu in contact with some hard substance, was ar
raigned for creating a disturbance in a bar room. One
of hie witnesses, the man ivho had been injured-by
defendant, looked as though lie had got into a cage of
Bengal tigers. He said tile defendant had struck him
without any provocation. Den-ndaut was lined five
dollars.
Hector Bush, a negro, was charged with fighting in
the street, and causing a mob to congregate. The
whule thing appeared to be a friendly quarrel, the de
fendant taking exception to gome one else calling him
“a liar." ilcieudaut was ordered lo fight the logs in
the yard attached lo the Barracks for forty-eight
hours.
d. Hall, a highly colorud individual of tbe chimney
sweepers' profession, was said to 1 have thrown* piece
01 bneX from the lop of a house which btruck a email
buy on ihe head. He claimed lo be innocent, and
' that he did not intend to strike the boy. This excuae
would not suffice, and he was fined five dollars, and
ordered to bo bound to the chimney contractor for the
h-y:::ent of the money-.
Housebreaking.
§. Jenkips, a negro, was before His Honor the
Mayor yesterday morning ou the charge of house
breaking. The arresli .g officers did not answer to
their names and were ordered under arrest. A negro
woman detailed tue circumstance of the houseb: eaa-
ing, aim said the defendant threw bricks at the
house, and afterwards procured an axe with which he
broke the door open. A woman who claimed to be
the wife of the defendant, although not married, Laid
that she had left him because he did not provide
for hor. Ine defendant said the witness kept a bad
fcoute and fie wapted his wife out of it; and besides,
fie ha<J rented tfie game house slid thought; he hsd a
light to go entrance. i
Lieut. Bell etates that this was tho place where a
Considerable amount of stolen property had been re
covered a short time since, and that it was a noto
riously improper house. It was ordered that the
Premises be closed up and that the defondant and
witnesses be heid for a further examination.
Labckny.—Ben Gadsden, a negro, was charged be
fore Ris Honor, Mayor Anderson, yesterday morning
With stealing a vest from a clothing store. Tho pro.
prietor said the negro went into the store with two
others, and took the first opportunity td put the vest
under his coat. Ihe arresting officer said that when
he arrested the defendant, fie tried to slip out of his
coat and ho was obliged to knock him down. After
wards tho negro struck the officer.
The defendant said he bought tbe vest from another
negro, and explained striking the officer by saying he
was merely warding off the blow oi the club. His
version of the affair did nbtjsoem credible, and he
Wsa sentenced to thiilv days ou the chain gang lor
larceny, und fined twenty dollars for striking the offi
cer. in default of payment he was sentenced to serve
thirty days additional.
The Pbksxnt Tax Obdinanc*.—We would call the

concise statement, which appears tn another column,
of the expenses that wiU probably be incurred by tbe
city for tbe present fiscal year, extending from Octo
ber, 1866, to October, 1867.
This eatimate is based upon tho expenses of last
year, and la thus laid before the public that tho tax
