WEDNESDAY MORNING, MARCH X4. 1««7.
Dressing tor »««»■
I.
« Has anybody beard the bell?
You b »tv ? Dear me, I know right well
I’ll never dress in time,
For mercy's sake, come htiPjCe. June.
I’ll make my toilet quite plain.
[This is for the sake of rhyme.]
•• Here, lace tills gaiter for me '*■—do.
“ a liole,” you say ? Plague take the shoe 1
••Do Janey, try and hide it.
1 know its Sunday , but my soul ?
1 cannot wear it with a hole—
The men will surely spy it"
They’re r «ttoni« peeping at our feet.
Though to be sure, they needn't peep,
The way we hold our dresses.
I’ll disappoint them though to-day,
And cross myself ; ’’ “ pray did you say ?
Don't laugh at my distresses.’’
“ How beautifully this silk will rustle!
Please hand my self-adjusting bustle,
My corset and my hoops,
There uow—I’ll take live skirts or six.
Do hurry Jane, and help me fix—
You Know 1 cannot stoop.”
"How will I say my prayers to-day ?
As if girls went to church to pray 1
What makes you talk so foolish ?
Here—damp this ribbon in Cologne,
Wuat for ?—to pai/U-r-you silly oue.
Now, Janey, don't be mulish.”
“It’s no more harm than ‘lily-white’—
Please see if this cheek's painted right,
Aud hand my box of chalk,
Now damp the towel, Janey dear,
Aud wipe this eyebrow; much I tear
I shall be late, to walk.”
“Now, thenl my bonnet, if you please—
1 truly think tuy bead will freeze.
The frightful little Bcoop 1
Thank Heaven! my cloak is handsome, though
It c ist enough to be, 1 kuow,
[Straighten this horrid hoop.’’j
“My handkerchief aud gloves you’ll find,
Just in that drawer—you're very kind.
(Does my dress trail ?
It’s all the lasbiou now you know,)
Pray docs the paint and powder show
Through-thie lace veil ?”
“Thauk you, my dear, I believe I’m dressed I
The saiute be praised! the day of rest
Comes only once in seven I
For, if on all the other six,
T/lis troubl; X should have to fix.
I’d never get to Heaveu ! ”

My Love.
I sent my love some violets;
She ne’er i eplied.
Each day I said, “Ah I she iorgets,
Aud they have died.”
I sent my love a snow-white rose;
She gave no sign.
Each day 1 said, “Alas! she grows
Much less divine.”
I sent my love a jewel rare,
And theu she wrote—
"Your gift I will not fail to wear.”
I burned the note.
Her face soon faded from my mind,
Though fair lo see;
I said, “Shu only loves, I find,
My gold, net me.”

The Oolobed Question in Philadelphia.—A col
ored woman from Princetown, New Jersey, prose
cuted, before Alderman Beitler, on Monday, a con
ductor of the Fifth street railroad can, named John
0. Sclilafer. The prosecutrix made, oath that.she
wanted to ride up Filth street. Upon each cor that
she desired to enter sbe was told to wait for the next
one. She says that growing weary of waiting, abc
was determined to get opon car No. 32, of which
Sclilafer was conductor. She claims that sbe was
pushed off, and for this enters criminal prosecution.
The conductor entered bail in aix hundred dollars to
answer at court.
The circumstances of this case, says me News, are
peculiar, aud as a matter of bald fact the reporter
gives them without comment. For some months the
'Tenth street railroad made no distinction for color in
people who wished to ride in their cars. The receipts
of the road, fell off seventy-five dollars per day at
once, and from that to ninety and one hundred dol
lars. The directors, after some weeks’ teial, TwJH a
meeting, aud concluded to devote every filth car to
colored people, and to such whites a* would ride with
them. Oddly enough there were then scarce any
colored people who wanted to ride. In the vehicles
marked “colored people allowed in this car” not a
face was visible. The prosecutrix in this case could
have ridden had she waited three minutes longer,
and the conductor ejected her as considerately as he
eonld.

To Planters:

SAVANNAH, October 1st, 1M6. |
THE J. B OAKY & OO.’S ■
‘ NONPAREIL FRENCH GUANO”
W Uldn is now offered to Planters poseenses qnadi-
ties which are peculiar to it alone, and renaae it
far superior to any other known, as has bnen fully
proven by the “French Academy of Sciences,” sod
also by practical persons of enlarged experience In
every department oi Agriculture. j, u ,
Among the meritorious qualities which peculiarly
distinguish the “ Nonpareil French Guano,” may be
enumerated the following:
1st. It will promote the growth of Cotton, Corn, To
bacco, or any kind of grain or vegetable, equal to A
No. 1 Peruvian or Mexican Guano, as has been t
tested, at the aarne time being entirety free from
objectionable properties of the above, aa it ia a Perma
nent Improver of the Soil, instead ot a stimulant.
2d. It can be applied to the leavus as well as the
toots of plants, without any danger of burning them,
if used properly, and we guarantee that wherever ap
plied the soil will retain its moisture, and wiil lfot
bake, even the most clayey.
3d. It will prevent Worms or Insects from destroy
ing either plant or grain, and wherever it is apj “
every kind of worm or insects will instantly d
pear, its properties being repugnant to inseot life at
every kind. This quality alone willbe a great benefit
to agriculture when it is estimated what vast numbers,
as Southern planters kuow, have lost their crop by in
sect depredations.
Iu a circular it is impossible to fully enter into the
merits of the “ Nonpareil French Guano,” bnt we as
sure the public that we have not exaggerated, and it
only remains for those interested to test Its value,
when we feel confident that it will rapidly supercede
all others.

Gents—My gardner has been "making experiments
with your “Nonpariel French Quanp”—-he hsn 0B-
pjied it to beets, cantelopes and very yonng cncninber
vines, which at this season of the year are very liable
to injury from insects. As far as we can judge, it is
a first-rate article, and comes up to your claim of ita
merits. I shall use three tons on wheat and rye this
tall.
Messrs. J. B. Cary ft Co., through their Agent, Mr.
