Can it any longer be a question of doubt that witebU*i».:P*riy of the “higher law” order an official oath is at all a sacred thing or of binding value. The Constitution—which is the very life of our Government, and by which \he law ful rights of all are protected—is no longer to be looked to air a refuge, when-it stands; between those- rights and their selfish pur poses. Whither shall we go for safety-in pur present dar-fjerous crisis,’when, as we'iJow the highest law-making power is so completely in the hands of such a party ? The most prominent of the Radical leader* tell us that their moat daring add hazardous, deeds arc committed without law,and which they themselves agree are acts of usurpation Atl must see that the passage of the bill of which we speak is Indeed a most fearful pre cedent to eel before the people, and one which should cause even the Radicals them selves to stop and seriously consider before it be too late, else in the hands of somo other i,party it may be brought home to them with its most mfetul effects. Let it once be un derstood that there is a legislative power that may-make a precedent to set aside the Constitution in times of unusual excitement, then oar Government will be at the mercy of an irresponsible majority, and life, liberty and property become deprived of that secu - rity which so much enhances their value to us. adapted to the wants of the Government, lor the space of five years, which it thinks will give ample time_tp dispose of the. buildings ih Milledgeville and ereot new oaes in At lanta.
