PUBL.IC MKUIINO.
The announcement of a public meeting of
citizens, to be held in Johnson’s Square on
Tuesday evening next, will not fail to attract
the attention, as we feel assured it will meet
the cordial approval, of every well wisher of
Savannah at home and abroad, indicating, as it
do*>s, a determination on the part of our people
to unite, irrespective sf past differences or
present personal considerations or preferences,
in a resolute effort to rescue the old Forest
City, the commercial emporium of the State,
from threatened degradation and rain. The
friends of social order and good government
are thoroughly aroused to the necessity oi
preventing our city government from falling
into the hands of unworthy and unscrupulous
men, who, taking advantage of the disorders of
the times, are seeking to prompte their own
sellish and mercenary ends by the sacrifice f
the interests, dignity and character of our com
munity.
The issue is one of vital importance tn all
classes of onr people—to all who have any
interest in the good order, peace and pros
perity of the city—and no man whatever
his sphere, who has his own and the wel
fare of the community at heart can be in
different to the result The call embraces
all persons who desire to secure an honest,
faithful and efficient government of the city.
AH such are expected to attend the meeting
and give it the moral support of their pres
ence and co-operation.
Impkopks Chsdit.—The article which ap
peared in onr issue of yesterday headed “A
Trip to Savannah”, jfcc., was taken from the
Columbus Sun, and not the Euquirer, as it
was inadvertently oredited.
It is stated as a remarkable fact that every
newspaper in New York, except the Tribune,
is opposed to impeachment. This is decidedly
more significant than the drawn battle in New
Hampshire. Here is the newspaper press of
the great financial and commercial metropolis
of the country, opposing almost with one voice
this act of folly and madness. In these jour
nals we see reflected the sentiments and wishes
of the merchant princes and money changers,
who have other interests at stake than those of
the mere politician. There is no interest of the
country, industrial, commercial or financial, to
be promoted by the conviction aud removal of
the President. It is simply the demand of men
who make politics a trade to advance selfish
and partisan, ends.
But tlie Tribune is singularly inconsistent.
Whilst advocating the depositipn of the Presi
dent, it does not hesitate to characterize Con
gress as a corrupt and mischievous body. It
says, in its issue of the 18th instant:
“To-day tfie credit of the United States, in
the great money markets of Europe, rules
lower than it did when Congress met. And
this for the excellent reason that capitalists
find our legislators honeycombed with ras
cality.” ’
As the organ of*the dominant party, it speaks
ex cathedra, and its judgment Will not be
questioned by* the intelligent portion oil the
American’people*. <kioj *. * i

•rhe Atlanta Intclllgenosr has been relia
bly informed that Judge Reese accepts the
Democratic nomination for Governor. It is
now the duty of every good citizen of
Georgia to do all in bis power to secure the
election of this able and incorruptible states
man. Hitherto our conquered people,
bound hand and foot by military reconstrac'
tiou, have been unable to do anything tor
tbeir own relief. Patient protest has beeu
tfie only possible political altitude, as it has
been ths only honorable one. But now that
a National party has aiisen in the North,
whose principles and co-operation we can
honorably accept, the duty of our people
becomes as obvious aa it has been hitherto
dubious. Acoepting the standard of this
National parly in the nomination of our
distinguished candidate for Governor, join
ing in its councils, aud aiding it as we may,
we prove our interest in the welfare of the
nation, and contradict most conclusively tbe
Radical falsehood that we ore still “rebels.
Every man la the community who wears
a freeman [a heart is surely sensible of the
mom anions nature of the approaching con
test for political power iu our State. A tew
days more of iuaclion and the culminating
point of Radical policy would be reached,
'the structure of society woold bo reverted,
and governmental power would be trans
ferred from the intelligent citizcu to the
white ftdventarers and iguoraut blacks untu
tored iu the high cupabiliims ot political
rule. The sentiment oi the hour is, “honest
and conservative men to the front,” to take
their legitimate loud iu the government of
the Btute, and to command the alien usurp
ers of their just iuflueuoe to stand back be
fore their superiors. Less than two hundred
white faces must no lougt-r be permitted to
lay their hands upon a mass of impressiona
ble and unsuspecting colored people and
mould them to the common ruin of both
whites and blacks in the community. We
are aware that some of our leading public
men, who have held honorable positions in
Georgia, have gone oyer to the enemy—hut
there is a moral power iu the united will oi
a true aud intelligent people that is invul
nerable even to their mischievous influences.
Though renegades, they are susceptible to
human influences, and the solemu protest of
more thuu a humlred thousand freemen will
pierce even their triple mail of Radical
venom, which they have put on to conceal
the enormity ot their treachery. Stand firm,
theD, men of Georgia, for if we remain
united aud uncontaminated by the political
charlatanism of the times our triumph is
certain.
THE TYNG CASK.
Bishop Potter's Reprimand—Vigorous
Proteat of the Father of the Offeuder—
An Appeal to ttffe General Convention.
Rev. 8tepben Tyng, Jr., was publicly re
primanded on Saturday morning in tlie
Church of Transfiguration, New York, for a
violation of a canon of the Protestant
Episcopal Church in officiating in the parish
ot another minister without his consent. An
immense concourse of spectators tilled the
church. Bishop Potter administered the
reprimand, explaining the nature of the
offense aud cautioning Rev. Mr. Tyng
agaiust a repetition of it. R«v. Mr. Tyng sat
in the aisle of the church iu plain cuaiume.
He manifested no emotion aud made no te-
uiarks whatever. The ceremonies were
very impre&sive, and at tbeir conclusion the
Rev. Dr. Tyng, Sr., one of the counsel tor
hia son, handed the following protest to
Bishop Potter.
“Right Rev. Sir : It has been your pleas
ure to ‘approve’ of the ‘findings’ of this
court of presbyters, and you have now ad
ministered the sentence ot ’admonition,’
‘recommended’ by them against the respon
dent.
‘This is your own act and your own re
sponsibility. I, Stephen H. Tyng, D. D.,
a presbyter in the Protestant Episcopal
Church iu the diocese ot New York, aud
ector of St. George’s Church iu the city of
New York, and one of the counsel for this
respondent, do most respectfully but Firmly
enter my solemn protest against this whole
proceeding, now completed, from its com
mencement to its conclusion, as false in its
allegations, unjust in its principle, uncau-
onical in its form, illegal iu iu liansactionK,
iniquitous iu its purpose, and voluntarily
and ptrsis- tenily persecuilug in ilsspirit,
process aud development.
“And I do solefnuly appeal from t hia de
cision of this court, and from this approval
thereof, by the Bishop of this diocese, under
the most earnest s-. nse of ths cruel injustice
with which this respondent has been treated;
to the supreme and final decision ot the gen
eral convention of the Prote*iaut Episcopal
Church in the United States; to the abiding
sense of justice and righteousness in the in
dividual members of the church; to the con
scientious review of the Christian Church
throughout this laiid; to the accord of future
historic troth; to gei»e« aliens ot advancing
light and religious purity and power, which
may come hereafter, and with the deepest
humility, but with confidence unfeigned, to
the judgnient seat of the Lord Jeso^Uhrist,
who is the one great head and ruler of his
church, and whose approval can never be
given to the persecution of the iunoceut, or
to the oppression ot the weak
“Given in the Church of the Transfiguration
in the city of New York, the 14th day of
March, A. D 1S6B.
Stephen II. Ttng, Sr.,
‘Rector of St. George’s Church in the city of
New York.”
The offenecof the Rev. Mr. Tyng, Jr. who was
convicted by a court of presbyters, consisted
in preaching in a certain Methodist church in
New Jersey, a territory embracing a parish of
a Protestant Episcopal minister, and doi g so
without obtaining authority from said minist r
or other church officials haviug the light to
authorize him to officiate in said parish.
