The Ku-Klux-Klan.
This now order of secret societies is craa-
tir*ff quite a sentmtioo ia various parts of tbe
United States, and it is believed will.spread
over the whole land. Exactly what it is or
ganized for is not positively known. It
hinted by some that its purpose is to offset
the/‘Grand Xrmy of the Republic," com
raanded by the lerociong and bloody General
Logao, whose ill nature is ceaseless, and
whose tempesiBous ire ritnla the paroxysms
of the *’tnruy9 Afouton.”
Whatever thu spirit And designs of this
order of singular name, it is tilling the news
papers with strange paragraphs aud remark
able accounts of mysterious circumstances.
The orders published tr-mi “these headquar
ters'’ of the ‘\Ku-Kiux:Kian” are very novel
iu style, dealiug largely iu dark allusions ro
horrors of the most dreadful nature. One
before us requires the “Deputy Grand Exe
cu 1 .loner" to be at hiB post. The “Kigbt
Hawks” are especially commanded lo “be
ready," and tho whole body are informed that
“ it i» necessary, with the requiremeuU of
oar noble broiberho*>d, that uach brother
shall taste e/\flzsh aud handle bone to become
cunvinccd of the faithful peribrmance of duty,
“by Deputy Grand Executioner*” Thee* are
horri’uiJe uy unctions indeed. They.are given ii
the tiaine of tlit “Great Grand Giant command
ing.” lie must La a liaeai descendant of Titus
AhPRONicus, and has learned not only to feed
hie enemies on human flesh, but to muke a very
satisfactory meal upon it himself! Hour Gene
ral Logan is to contend against such a combi
nation ot all the elements of power aud terror
we cannot imagine.
Naturally, an organization dealing so large
ly iu the mysterious and awful has excited uo
email degree of auperstitiou where it has ap
yeared. Apparitions of all sorts are beheld iu
Boatsry traces and even ia the street* ot
cities. Weird horsemen have been seen
travelling on the wings of the wind, and
cob tending armies iu the Heaven*, from
which li 'wed rivers of blood, have been wit
nessed by reliable people! An aged and truih-
fnl negro riding through a wood in a western
Stale found himself escorted byagnostly
dragoon who cenversed with him,aud taking
elf his skul]^ asked the venerable Afri
can to hold It -while be fixed his backbone !
The poor old black man, who had no baric-
bone at all at that time, put his steed to tbe
top of his speed, and reached home raoro
dead than alive. And he was a truthful ne
gro l
Iu short, these are but moderate speci
mens of tbe osw literature and the mysteries
introduced by tbe “Ku K uxKlan.’’ Its in-
stitutiwn ha* a moral which we should all
bear iu mmd*_ In all revolutionary, periods
of a country—when tyranny is in the as
cendant and personal rights are violated—
*• crek orders bare (sprang fourth as natural
offspring freia the political condition ef the
time. There need, therefore, be no surprise
at tbe appearance of this Order, nor at the
advent of a score of. others. The “Graad
Army of the Republio," led by the B >badil
