To such a threat, from such a souroe, nu
de r ord in ary circumstances we would attach
no importance. Hut at a time, like the pre-
suut, when reckless aud unprincipled dema
gogues, white aud blaqk, are busily at work
exciting and inflaming the worst passions of
tbe ignorant and oredulous blacks in order
Ibat they may coutrol them for their own
selliali purposes, such a manifesto from one
of tbeir most unscrupulous and villainous
leaders, if it warrants no serious apprehen
sions, is well calculated to arouse the indig
nation and excite tbe resentment of oar cit
izens. It is mortifying iu tbe extreme that
our community should be thus exposed to
iusult and peril. But it is one of the evils
of our times which we are called upon to
endure, if not with resignation, at least with
fortitude and pruduuoe. Lei every good
citizen, who has the peace aud safety of the
commuuity at heart, remember that, in the
present temper of our population, a very
little spark would kindle a fearful conflagra
tion
To our colored population—the worthy

would stuf, beware of the pernicious coun

struction. The white men whom you have
known for years are better friends to your
race than the miserable adventurers who
seek to Involve you in crime. Prom the lor-
incr you have nothing to fear, from tbe lat

At preseut we have to look to the mili

to-day. we trust that this bold threat ol
incendiarism will not escape his notice.

Tbe rcraaikabln development of the rail-
toad Internstt of Georgia since the tennina-
tioa of thaoonflict between the ttroseotions,
illustrates tbe energy which our railrbhd men
have displayed in repairing the wastes of
war. The Government at Washington ex
hibited great wisdom in the prompt restora
tion of our*'roacUT 16 die original mSnage-
ment, and the sale upon liberal terms of the
rolling stock and iron by the military au
thorities. A basis of operations was thus
great success. At the present time all ll
old eaUblisbed railroads in our State are
pretty .good (condition—some of them fx
Umde<V>and not -d- few better stocked ttian

But what is eveu of more importance, new

The grand practical scheme Georgia en
terprise has in view is not merely tin* connection
of the grain growing region of the West with
the Southern Atlantic coast, by a : life tier,
shorter, aud, therefore, cheaper route, but the
far more important scheme of connecting Sa-
vanuak with the great thoroughfares concen
trating at New Orleans, by-the re*tt*iXiou, ul
timately, of the Atlantic' Ja Gulf Load, which,’
of course, will be tapped,, iu the course.of time,
by branches, ia order to devi-lope local trade.
This consummation will open up Abe trade of
the Southwest, which is seeking a short <nid
speedy outlet to the commerce of the Atlantic*
and when effected, will, render this Jtbad as
advantageous to Savannah as the Erie Canal - hi
to New York.
This very brief review of the activity of the
Georgia Railroad interests, shows: that we have
already entered earnestly upon the grand race
for commercial development. The industrial
activity that demands these increased facilities,
notwithstanding the unsettled jmlitical condit ion
ot the country, is most promising and enoour-
aging, and indicates a remarkable power of
recuperation, .enabling Georgia anil other
Southern States, in spite of the grave obstacles
to progress with which they are surrounded,
so rapidly to engage in the work of industrial
reconstruction.

as the above from “Devil’s Rest," but in o^ir
opinion they are doing great barm to the
very cause which they desire to serve, not
only here among the ignorant and credulous

North, where their mysterious publica
tions are regarded as evidence of a
diabolical “rebel" conspiracy against the
Congress’ aouointed. If a Radical black
guard is murdered by soldiers with tVhon)
he has had a quarrel, as was the case in Co
lurahas the other day, 'or a drunken negro
falls into the river and is drowned, the .cir

Yesterday morning a dispatch was received
here by" Madison Jwiies, that G. \Y. Ashbnrn,
a notorious member - of the Radical party of

the Atlanta Convention, had been killed at Co

From the Conductor of the Columbus train
who came through yesterday, we learn that on
Monday A difficulty occurred between some ne-
groea, when, afile of soldiers, headed by a ser
geant, interferred to stop it. ^
Ashbnrn thinking that the negroes wero be-*
ing rather roughly treated, interposed, when,
it is reported, the sergeant slapped, anil also
spit in his face, which he did not resent.
About 1 o’clock that night a party of men,
supposed to be ten or fifteen, went to iin ob
scure boarding honse where Ashbnrn was stop
ping and demanded an entrance, which was re
fused. They then broke open, the door and
went into Asbburu’s room. They fired Several
•hots at him—some reports say as many, as fif
teen, and none less than seven.
As eoou as the shots were tired the party re
tired, and had not been identified up to- the
time of the departure of the-train. Two per
sona, one white man and another a negio, had
been arrested, but no evidence of participation
in it had been obtained. {
