JOB BXOWS’S TACTICS.
It will be remembered tfcnt* wlfen Foster
Blodgett was on trial in 4be ofrefaii Court iq
this city on a charge of perjury, after thfi loyaV
jury had had the radkjtraent under <eqn|ider*r
tion, and when it was ascertained that they
were about to return a true bill, ex-Gorenipr
Brown, as counsel for Blodgett, sprung..rtfo.
test oath on the jury, by which inhny jof thb
jurors were forced tp retire from the
upon

i the challenge of the defendant, and the
finding of the bill was thereby defeated 'Fkier
min were however, supplied, and a rteWjUry hn-
pinneled, wliiuh jury affirmed the action of
their predecessors, and returned a true bill.
It appears that the ex-Govornor’a sharp
practice is made to serve his ends iuf
well in politics as in law. While Ju&ge
Irwin was his approved candidate,
will for the Black-aud Tan Convention,
Gov. Brown had nothing to eay against his
loyalty or his eligibility, and when be w&$
elected to that body, it is well known that
Gov. Brown and his friends were extremely
aoxious that he should take his seat in the
inenagery- But now that Judge Irwin ia a
candidate for Governor with the certain pros
pect of defeating Bollock, and thn« saving
the State from “bankruptcy and ruin,*’ Gov.
Brown has made the discovery that he ia
ineligible, and as in the oase of the Blodgett
jury proposes to drive the Judgo from the
field with the test oath. Having been an
Elector for the State at large in 18G1, and
assisted in oaaling the vote of the State for ,
Jtfferson Davis, Judge Irwin is declared to
be “disfranchised” by the Attain* Badiwrf fwrtimfc Iflrewi
Regency, of whioh Ex-Gov. Brown is the
acknowledged head, and by whom a hand
bill, declaring the ineligibility of^jhe Judge
to hold office is being circulated broadcast
throughout the State. This ridiculous and
mean electioneering subterfuge f id. ably
answered by a correspondent of the Atlanta
Iutelligencer in the following communica
tion:
SOARED, BADLY SCARED.
The Bullock party* utter long and painful
deliberation, in the absence ot any gi»od ar
gument aguiust Judge Irwin for Governor,
nave at last struck “ ile.” They- have 10
their satisfaction discovered that Judge Ir-;
win is ineligible and cannot take the office
of Governor if elected. Let us look at the
decency of this argument
Judge Irwin was elected to a seat in the
Convention, with the approval of Goy.
Brown aavi Dr. Bard, and both of them de
sired him to take his seat.
Judge Irwin, being a Judge of the Superior
Court, not wishing to resign his sefit upon
the bench, declined a nomination, arid very
properly refused to take bis seat id the Col-
va uioo, and put the District on notice befo e
his electiou that he would not wiv$. But.,
hoping that he would change hie vijew*, he
was kept on the ticket. He showed his mea
nness, and his corruptibility, by still aeclf
ning the allurements of office, wbjerej ho
thought it improper to take the pfutfAred
honor. Had Judge Irwin been the nominee
oi tne Convention, none would have been
more clamorous iu establishing his eligibility
tha i those who are now, for party purposes,
crying “ineligible.” .-. • • •
Judge Irwin was put on the electoral
ticket, without his knowledge or consent.
That ticket was objected t® at thp, time, be
cause there were too inaay Ruwn ffieu on it.
Judge Irwin narfd lio effort M> hb elected,
but simply cast the vote for Georgia, per
forming, as it were, a mere .clerical* duty.
Besides, if that renders hob ’ineligible,
every man in the South who voted for
Davis and Mr. Stephen*: ifl incompetent to,
hold office tor the same reason. ^ *• s
AgaiD, it is charged that Judge Irwin
aoted as Coniederafco attorney, and tfiercfotfr 4
ineligible. Iu ihe absence ot the Cjnfedffir-
ate at orney, Judge Harden, appoimed^udvc^
Irwin to take charge of the caee«*4h;-tha Con
federate court in Marietta. He aiMpiy, aa a
lawyer, attended to the business of an absent
brother attorney. He nfiver handled a dollar
of >lh a proceeds of condemned property,
That matter was attended to-by another.
Now, if that renders Judge Irwin ineligi
ble, every lawyer who practiced iu a Conled
crate court is ineligible to office for the tarn#
reason. If that gave aid and comfort to the
enemy. Judge Erskine and all such are to-.
y deprived of holding office, for rocQKr
iiiaiag the Confederate court and to praotio-
iog law in *he same. T
Away with such .stuff! Drowning men
are still catching' at straws. The points
made on Judge Irwins eligibility are be
neath what might have beetf «*Ji>«cte<j
of some men who are making theme, .ffi®
desperation ol the hour hsa Uriy^} .them
