a New York Fenian, who is said to have ^

When the Managers of Impeachment
closed their case on Saturday,. there was. a
feeling of relief in the heart of every friend
of the Executive over the weak case made
out against him; and there was a certain
disappointment on the part of the Radicals
for the same reason. The impression had
beeu growing-for a week that the chances
for the conviction of the President were
diminishing, and this was materially
Bireng hened during the lan, two or three
days of the trial. This was particularly to
be noticed when the Managers failed, and
wolully failed, to establish their charge of
conspiracy. The tricky Butler aided this
materially by ovtr-reacbing himself and as
sociates, by attempting to prove that the
President app.dated his friend, Col. Cooper,
Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for the
purpose of controlling the moneys of the
United States. As Cooper was appointed in
November, and the charge alleged that the
President conspired with others in this mat
ter in February, the accusation was baseless.
The Court by a decided vote refused to al
low a question to he put bearing on the
point, tnus deciding that the appointment ol
C< opor was not to be brought in the issue.
Tue effect of this has been salutary; so,
when the prosecution closed Saturday, the
natural inquiry was : “ Is this all there is
against the Protident ?’-
I think from the indications that impeach
ment conspiracy is on its last legs.
There was much surprise mauife^ted at the
managers not contesting the demand of the
defense for lime to oollect and prepare their
testimony, much of which is documentary
evidence. Old Simon Cameron, Sumner and
Coukliug, all of whom are remarkable more
for zealous partisanship than brains, sug
gested to the “seven wise men” lhat they
ought to say something on the proposition ;
ana old Cameron insisted there was no rea*
sou the trial should not proceed on Monday,
but it was no avail. The managers were
dumb, even Ben Butler could not utter a
note, and so it w&9 submitted to the C Jurt,
which granted it by a vote oi 37 to 10.
Tiiere are rumors that the President's coun
sel will ask for a dismissal of the cause on
the grounds that no cose has been established,
bat the statement is erroneous. The coun
sel think they would be entirely justifiable in
asking it, bat on consultation with the Presi-
