For less than 600... .$1.00 per hundred.

The general features of the election yesterday were
the earns aa the day previous, varied somewhat in the
charaoter of the incidents at the polls, and a more de
cided enthusiasm upon tha part of the whits popula
tion, who, acting on the suggestions ma^* through
the Conservative press, lent the moral lnflnsnce of
their presence to sustain and cheer those colored Con
servatives who had labored m the *auit. under so
msay disadvantages the first day uf the election. At
on early hour the avenues of approach to the Court
house were densely pecked with people, a large num
ber of our most Influential and honored citizens being
present on the ground. The former day’s experience
taught several practical lessons to those engaged in
the fight, through the ballot, with Radical rum and
misrule. The arrangement* made by the military
author!-ies and the civil officers for the preservation
of the peace, and the uninterrupted exercise of the
franchise, was quite effective.
The voting oummsnoed lively, the Conservative
whites aud oolored awaking to the important issues
at stake, and entered upon the day’s work with spirit
and zeal, and c fleeted great good by their presence at
the polls during the entire day.
Of course there w*s the usual amount of election
eering going on, the recital of which would not in
ters t the reader. The keen observer could detect
the dodges of the Badical party to take out of tne
hands of the other side any control of what tbt y
were pleased to denominate the negro vote. Tickets
ij the hands of the Cons.rvative o >lored people were
Ukeu away and others substituted, and one of the
Registrars. Mr E. S. Nixor, waa rebuked by Hon.
Henry 8 Fitch lor tvi.emly going out of the line of
bis ofiici.l day in oateebiaiug voter* aa to whaL
ticket they intended to vote. Col Filch despatched
to Gan. Meade inquiring aa to whether it waa or was
not proper for regia.rare tuna to interfere with the
voters, and received an auawer saying that neither
the registrars uor any other person had the right to
interfere la tne manner stated. The Badical i had
been playing that game to an alarmiDg extent, and
the Conservatives are thus indebted to their Congres
sional candidate for bringing the matter directly to
the attention of ueu. Meade.
Iuside the Court House there waa mnoh ablins ion
and considerable amount of nauseous exhalations
which waa borne, however, by the offio re on duty
with a degree of heroism, amounting almost to mar -
tyrdom The Inevitable Oltft shone like a fiery bea
con, pointing the newly enfranchised the way they
ehuuli go. Bentley. Sima and White, the humble
solicitors for offices of honor and trust under the new
regime, were as active aa might b j supposed under
the circumstances, and made themselves emiuenilj
conspicuous in this their first school of politics.
Mr. Nixon ordered the window opening on York
street, where ticks s had been placed for the conve
uience of those who desired to obtain them to be
closed, ihiukiug (probably, by this ruse to cut off th,
supply of Conservative vote*. Busy bands however
were distributing them to crowds of colored men
who desired to act with the Conservative party, aud
many of them found their way into the ballot box,
notwithstanding the extra official conduct of this Beg-
istrar.
Wnile the show was going on thus quietly inside
the Court House, there were some side shows going
on outside. One negro for attempting to go in and
vote a Conservative ticket waa set upon by a crowd of
black ruffians of the other psrty, and would have
been beaten to death had not the military and police
promptly come to his assists ace. They accused him
of selling his vote. One negro, while he was in
charge of the military, drew h-g pistol, and would
have shot the obnoxionsjvoter, hid he notb :en quick
ly se zed aud conveyed to the Barracks. Several rows
evidently gotten up for the purpose of driving from
the polls Conservative col «red people, were suppressed
by the police force and the unitary. The negro above
alluded to was set upon as many as five times by the
mob of Bad cai colored people, and finally made bis
escape aft r having deposited a airtight Conservative
ticket. We saw him as he was going home, and he
evidently felt the dignity of hia position, aa identified
with the best interests of his State.
Just before the closing of the polls, it waa hinted
that arrangements woud be made to open two other
precincts. We were informed that Nixon had tele
graphed to General Meade for snch authority, bat
w«;re unable to ascertain what answer haa been re
turned. The Conservatives regard it as another trick
of tue enemy, aud oppose it.
The number ot votes polled up to the closing at
6 o’clock yesterday re icbe 1 a total of 3,458, otw tioh
1.1*68 were deposited in the oounty box, and 2.390 in
the two city boxes. There were polled yesterday in
the city boxes 1,390 votes, a majority which were
cast by tbe whites.
The prospect altogether look) cheering, and if th e
white element and the colored allies amongst the con
servatives will make as fair a fight for the coming two
days, they can undoubtedly carry the election, and
defeat the schemes of the rule and ruin party. So
mote it be.

The Savannah Ladies Memorial Associa
tion.—This S rciety met yesterday at the-vestry of
tbe Independent Presbyterian Church, to make some
preliminary arrangements for observing tbe historic
26th of April. The'anniversary this year fal’s upon
the Sabbath, but it wav decided that the time for
decorating the graves of our heroic dead, who
willingly gave their lives for the cause of their
people, should not be ehbnged, the, work being not
c >nsidered inconsistent with a pious observance of
the babbath, but rather especially adapted to the
sacred day. So on next Sabbath afternoon, should
the weather permit, the ladies of the city will visit
Liurel Grove Cemetery to enjoy the melancboly
pleaaure of decorating the patriots’ graves with
mementoes of lasting affec'ion. Should the weather
he unfit on that day, tbe ceremonies will be post
poned to the next fair d*y. This Association are
endeavoring to raise foods for enclosing the lota
where re6t the Confederate dead, with a plain but
aubs sntiai iron fence. They have secured a part
of the necessary amount, but not nearly euough for
tbe poition of tbe work designed to be accomplished
this season. This is a pr ject which all our
c.tizens should encourage, and both duty and
patriotic pride snouid dictate prompt and libetai
c- ntributians.
Mont vale Spbinos.—The public have no
donut been pleased to learn from the announcement,
■ays the Knoxville, Tenn., Press Jb Herald, that this
de.ight.ul Simmer Resort, not only for invalids, but
for «~e .era of recreation and pleasure, will be
opsne 1 for the reception of guests on the first of
June. The Springs will be under the immediate
superintendence of the proprietor—Mr. Joseph L.
King—whose excellent management of the estate
ll3hment in 1833 wi'l be pleasantly remembered by
all who were so fortunate as to partake of hia hospi
talities. The tacillties for reaching the Springs hav ;
been greatly increased. Last year it was necessary
to travel br c >ach from Kioxvlle, a distance of
twenty-four miles. This season visitors cab reich
Marjviiie by rail, and by a pleasant drive of nine
milea over an excellent road, and in comlortable
coaches, within three hoars after leaving Knoxville!
reach Montvale.
Montvale has never yet been appreciated. Al
though it has long been a favorite resort with those
acquainted with its merits and attractions, yet having
therefore been somewhat remote from the great lines
of travel, it baa been passed by for more remote,
t'iou^h less attractive resorts in Virginia and else,
where. Now that it i9 brought within easy approsoh
aud is being fitted up in the best of style, we doubt
out—at leas-. « e hope—it will not be long fill Mont-

Damage by the Hailstorm on Monday —
We anticipated considerable damage from ihe vio
lent tempest < f Monday afternoon, an unusually
flare - one, in »ind and rain, Grander and lightning,
and a fiiteen-ml .rates fall of monster halis’onei, large
as mu«ket builets, that rattled threaten'ngly against
the blinds, and moat have smashed unprotected
gt.sa. We learn from the suburbs that great damage
was done to the crcps of vegetables, aona entire gar
dens being destroyed, melons and cnoumber*
faiily dedicated, vines cot and torn in pieces, peas
beaten down in a mangled condition, potato top*
beaten off the hilla as if cat off with a knife, or fairly
uprooted, and shrubbery badly damage j. Every gar
den we have heard from was similarly injured. We
judge this misfortune will badly tfifoct euppliee for
the tarly vegetable market.
