A Visit to the Chatham
Wednesday afternoon, being in tbe vicinity of the
jail, and recollecting a long-standing promise of our
Iriand, Waring Russell, to pay him a visit?, we called
®t this institution and thoroughly inspected the
Premises. Mr. Russell, for a wonder, was absent,
but we received every courtesy from Mr. Martin
Wendelken. Deputy Jailor. W* found the jail, aa
uiual, neat aa wax, every prisoner allowed all poasi
tie liberty consistent with protection against escape
We beard no complaint from any prisoner, although
the strictest surveillance ia exercised over them. The
Ulterior is kept white washed all the time, and every
Attention paid to cleanlint as and all sanitary me*«-

Jail, eleven of which are white. J. M Graham ia the
