fourfeee years of *ge, (and very smalt

lodged ta j'iil* Hb mkk^s^be following state-

doch, Lake,- and Oonnnlley, ibe firsc two
about his own age, the latter about 12 years
of age, coiioaivid the idea two days ago ro
take Ithe engine out and have k ride. At 12
o’clock last night they commenced opera
tions by craw liog through a uiidow in the
eiigine-h.ouse and commenced to fire up.
TnejeDgine was disconnected, but Briggs
being a natural 1 engineer and having bdeu
around wbeh km h things we it.done, speed i
ly connected her, aod naviug got the large
doors of the engine-house open they ran her
out to the water tank, but lailed in the at
tempt to take in water. They however
started with what water they had in the
boiler, for Jamasbuig, blowing the wbijile-
at every epossiug and ringing the bell all the
way, to warn people to clear the track, aud
as Briggs says, they went pretty last; but
people ou the line pt the road aroused by the
unusual sound of an engine ou that road, at
so hde au hour, say they weut by like light
ning.
A Jamesburg they run out of steam, and
they had hauled her up by the water lank at
that place, when the eogiue got too hot to
hold them, and they were qo iged to le ive
her, the boy Briggs goiug to look for a good
place to sjeep, taking the ianleru with him,
but «n being discovered was very desirous
to have the people think he did not intend
to steal the lamero ; the other boys left him,
going in another direct ion, and have not yet
been arrested. The engine was very much
damaged by the intense heat to which she
had been sui jected. The boy Briggs is a
most recklessjittie fellow. A few years ago
be took passage on the truck under the cars,
aod went to Amboy, and from thence he
st< le; a pafsige lo New York, where he was
arrested for a vagraut and sent lo the West
with a farmer, from whence he stole a pas
sage back to Freehold oy railroad. (
A few weeks ago he took a horse and
wagon from a shed in rear of oue of the.
sloree in the village, aud kept them away in
an opt of, the way buildiug near the village
for two days, until they were found. When'
asked why he did it he said be supposed he
was bard up Jor a ride; for this he was ar
rested, but IbeGraud Jury, iu compassion of
his leader age, failed to find a bill against
bin), aud he was dischargi d. His parents
are very respectable people, but have uo cou-
trol of their wi.d sod, who seldom sleeps at
home, but generally in- a barn or .ah out
bouse, or carriage standing under a ’shed ut
the hutaL. Altogether, his last freak is a
most remarkable one, and he will most likely
be kept m a,place from whence it will be im

\ Bqileb Buksi.—Our quiet town and con -
ruuni'ty were startled on last Monday, abuu.
II o’clock, by an explosion equal ro the re
port of a siege gun of heavy calibre. The
very earth trembled beneath the shock, and
the houses for hundreds of yards around"
quivered as if agitated by the throes of an
earthquake. The cause however was the
explosion of a boiler at tbe steam mill ol
Messrs. Pooser & Montgomery, situated at
the edge of the town. The buildings and
machinery are a perfect wreck, aud we have
beard that there was no insurance no tbe
property. Part oi the machinery and build*
