which wcnld disprove the allegations of the
Impeuchers and justify the President before
the ‘country, provokes great indignation
among., honest. and reflecting men. as too
surely indicating a foregone conciusion'of
the final result. The r more outrageous it fs
too, because the prosecution had been al
lowed the widest latitude, even to the ad
mission of Mr. Foster Blodgett, of Augusta,.
Who testified in his own behalf as against
top President’s action', as he supposed. But
the case was prejudged, and the greater ne
cessity, therefore, to admit everything which
could strengthen the case against the ac
cused, and reject all evidence iu his favor.
Now, u!l that remains is to go through
certain forms, to hear au argument, to listen
10 an iodignant protesi from the Counsel f..r
the President, then Bingham will close up
with a frothy hsiraugue, the Court (God save
the murk!) will render its judgment of guiliy,
and Andrew Johnson will be removed. He
may exclaim }ike the Freueh King, “Alter
me the deluge.”
What are 10 be the results, immediate ami
remote ? if we can trust information gleaned
from thote who are permitted an inside View

doubt it? Why, Johnson is removed be
cause be was au obstacle iu the way of car
rying out the Reconstruction echemi—and
you all know, alas! too well, what “Recon
struction’ 1 means. Well, Mr. Wade is u
fauatie—uoneuiore biller. He is an ill-bred,
vulgar man, and delights as much in showing
his couterupt of gentility and refinement as
he does in his shocking profanity, which is
notorious to all the /uibitues of the Federal
city. He is for negro equality; he thinks a
“loyal” uegro belter than a person who is
while and has beeu a rebel. Hi; is for cou-
fi-cation. He agrees with Thud. Stevens
that the South should pay the expenses

aud his friends, who are persistently seeking
to degrade jour people, when he and his
party have absolute ppwhr, vydl not seek to
bring some (many of the more prominent)
id yonr people to condigu punishment?
The nupressiou prevails here that this will
be doue: That a policy will be inaugurated
which is designed to strike terror into the
hearts of the people of ttie South, so, while
it holds them iu subjection it will have a
corresponding effect ou the North, with a
View to the Presidential election. Is there
any mode by which some of iheae calamities
may be averted ? If Johosou had nt-rve,
before they depose huu he would issue a pro
clamation of amuesiy to- the whole South,
and thu9 checkmate those devils iu their sin
ister desigus. Perhaps he will—he has doue
Btranger things iu his strange career.
Another and more immediate result of Mr.
Wade’s succession is, of course, the selection
of another Cabinet, as the preaeut occupauts
will retire at once, remaining not a day in all
probability. There is much speculation as
to who will compose iu As yet there bus
beeu no one settled upon as Secretary ol

A Great Dive see nce —The publishers
have sent us a Norinern magazine called
“Public Spillt.” Skimming its pages, we
came across a remarkably wall written sketch
of the battle, of. Shiloh, in which General
Grant it at once defended and extolled. Hav-
in‘g graphically brought the combat to a
termination, tbe author proceed* to 1 detail
ocoacrences immediately consequent, among
w^icn it a reputed dispatch of Beauregard’s
dimly hihliug at a permission f »r ihe burial
of his'dead aud ministration of the wounded.
To which roquest, says tbe eulogist of Hiram
Uiysnas, “Grant Qunningly replied, that
the dead had been, buried, and the wonodsd
cared for—which was hot true for a week
afterward.” Rtally, this is a charming ad
mission ot willful and deliberate falsehood on
tbe part of a hero; a s^veu d*v> la^ehood,
which a truly graud man would have scorn-'
ed to utter.. The accusation of President
Johhson, in the'Blanton controversy, has
cumulative evidence, for he who spoke
falsely to Beauregard would not hesitate to
prevaricate 10 Johnson.
What a contrast does such a commander pre
sent to General Lee! Who would not rather,
a million of tunes, be the stainless President of
Washington College, with honor; truth and so
berness written upon his godlike brow, than he
who aspires .to the purple over the wreck of.
his country.juid , with the divorce of virtue.—
