Ai; government is based on the religious

(nd when there becomes a conflict ot views
in its administration, it arises, ot necessity,
from religious differences. It is tbe “reli

of the Methodists, as well as tome other re

of every well-thinking mind to be employed
In removing «ucb horrible notions. Doubt
less the old English translations.of the Bible
had much .to do with creating this horrid,
gad.l and dreadful notion. But. even the Jto -
man Catholics have always discarded it and
substituted a temporary punishment (a pur

been id reooguiziag any of you at all as de
serving to be classed as a religious body. So
far Irotn considering a Soumern Methodist
and the Northern Methodist as eiisting in

regard all classes there alike (because all are
alike any way at heart).
The only difference beidg' Ihe price we
have to pay for a very poor effort on tbe part
of some to appear Northeru'in ecntmreht-r
even Wen. G Browolow, who, of late years
(since 1861), has professed to be Northern in
religion, yet we who knew him best while
he “stumped the Western States" in 1862 aud
’6, are at no loss to measure ids reliability.
Now, I have spoken plainly at.d candidly,
just what all Northern Methodists feel aud
oelieve, but very few of them have the cour
age to come out and speak Iheir, true seati-

Religion, to be such, is progressive. It is no
longer a dull, hum-drum, dry reading of ttte
Bible, and that alter a peculiar interpretation
of past centuries. Modern soieuce,.and bet-
ter enlightenment ol the human mind, have
discovered new sources of'tight aud a far
wider field lor fhp application of Biblical
truths. The Biblegfske constitutions, must
be subjected to the teat ot experimeot, und,
if found inapplicable, it must be so studied
as to reveal the meaning aud interpretations
more in harmony with man’s progress. We
have only recently begun to discover the
true powers and application 'of the Federal
Constitution. So, likewise, are we just be
ginning to tee and comprehend that the
Bible, IS, in fact, the best constitiitton any
State or nation can have, when applied to
every day life among men in apolitical body.
We propose to make a proper application of
