The result of the election, bo far ae
Governor is concerned, is still in doubt,
with a difference of opinion as to which of
the c indidatea the probabilitieB favor. The
Constitution has, without doubt, been rati
fied, and it is equally certain that the Legia
labile will be decidedly Conservative, while
the K -presentation in Congress will be near
ly < ‘i Lilly divided.

The Louisville Courier, that true and
staunch Southern journal, alluding to the
brutal joy which the La Crosse Democrat
professes to feel at the assassination of Mr.
Lincoln, says that as much as it coodetnns
and despises this mode of political warfare,
ia compelled to say that it is not much more
revolting than the hypocrisy and pious cant
of the party that is so piercing in its shrieks
and denunciations of assassination. We have
before us, says the Courier, a R idical paper
—the Meriden Recorder, published in Con
necticut, the native State of the editorial
buffoon above alluded to. From a leading
editorial, urging the a-sassinalion of Presi
dent Johnson, we clip the following:
There was found a fiend so utterly
wretched as to take away tue great heart of
the nation, Abraham Lincoln; is there no
patriot worthy to strike to the dust the hate
ful tyrant who is loading our beloved coun
try with the galling chains of a most op-
E ressed despotism."’ The names of Abraham
incoln and John Browo are written side by
side on the golden scroll of .immortality ;
and he who would send an impeached trai
tor, betrayer and blasphemer to the bar of
God tor judgment, wonld write his name in
imperishable letters beside that of Washing-
. ton! The revolutionary.spirit of "Sic Sem
per Tyrannis still burns in. the hearts ol the
American people. May its bright fireB
never die oat.
If that Meriden editor was down here in
the Third Military District, his ideas ol tbe
the freedom of the press wonld bring him
not only under thq ban of Gen. Meade’s or
der, but ol outraged public opinion. But
be lives in the land of “moral ideas," under
the wings of the American spread eagle,
where all men are loyal and every man a
law unto himself, where “to the pure all
things are pure,” and to preach from tbe
pulpit or press robbery, y arson and assassina
tion against political opponents is a patriotic
virtue.
r ' A Satrap’s Obdeks.—Qeo. Reynolds of the
District of Texas, orders that sheriffs and
) constables execute all writs issued by Bureau
Agents, the same as if such writs had been
issued trom a civil court of the State. Will
any half decent Radical leader, asks tbe New
York Express, tell us what he honestly think
(if lie can think honestly) of such a proceed
ings iu a “free" country ?

I'oLiTJCAL Aspect of Northern Methodism
—W.j publish on our first page a remarkable
letter from S F. Waldro, a Northern Metho
dic. tvlm expresses in a very Irank and candid
niii. nei, the sentiments and feelings entertained
hv the powerful political organization to which
he belongs, towards their Christian brethren of
the South Coming from any other source
t'.ia i one of their own body, an avowal of such
baioiiious and anti-christian doctrines would
be discredited.
Mi.. Allan, a Radical member of the Vir-
gir.u Convention (elected a delegate by ne-
gr« having only one white’s vote), said,
8il -ling to tbe Constitution, an instrument
had teen framed which not only pnt the
wb to man uuder the negroes’ feet, but seal
ed. loo, the doom of tbe negro in the South.
No man with any patriotism or self-respect
couM vole for it. He concmded with these
’wools:
“I repeat, that I have favoTed every
scheuio and every proposition which could
teud to place the colored people upon au
equality with myself, but God forbid that any
vote or voice of mine should ever be used to
degrade the people of my own race. The
colored people must be elevated. My help
and strength shall ever be used for that pur-
pusc ; but when I stand a» the champion of
Virginia’s degradation, may my right hand
forget her conning and my tongue cleave to
the roof of my month.’'
The respectable Radicals of Virginia, few
in number, cannot bring their minds to an
endorsement of the Gonatilutioo.
The Cincinnati Enquirer says that Mr.
Henry Arden, of that city, has invented and
patented a machine or apparatus which gives
the promise of great utility. . It ia thus de
scribed :
its purpose ia to avoid the obstacles which
arise from differences of gauge in connecting
lines of railway. It is a contrivance for
speedily raising and lowering the bodies of
cars, in such a manner that the tracks of tbe
broad may be exchanged for those of the nar
row gauge, and vice versa, connected with a
time table, for the more readily moving both
cars and trucks, according to requirement,
The plan ia one of great simplicity and facil
ity of action, and the apparatus will be far
from costly, and we cannot otherwise than
bulieve it a very happy invention.
Cannibalism. — Cannibalism coitinues in
Algeria. French soldiers are waylaid, knocked
on the head, and made into broth or potted for
future eating. Two women, each having a
child, lived with & tribe near Tiaret. These
unfortunates did all they could for a long time
to stave off the horrors of the famine; but at
length, all their resources being exhausted, and,
public charity no longer to be relied on, they
agreed to eat the children. A bargain was
agreed to, and lots were drawn as to which
should be first killed. The mother who lost
gave up her infant, which was killed and eaten.
This served for a few days; but at last the
hideous supply came to an end, and the Woman
who had sacrificed her offspring claimed that’
the other should submit to the same loss. The
latter refused, being unable to bring her mind
to that extreme measure. After long alterca
tions both mothers at length agreed to submit
their difference to the decision of the Arab
bureau, and in this way the horrible facto came
to light.

A Fearful Pressure —A Wasbington cor

the weakness of Boutwell’s speech and dis
gust at his reckless perversion ot facts.—
These same Senators say that the pressure
brought to bear upon the members of the
Court to insure conviction is fearful, even
the churches joining in the crusade."

Six of the greatest and most populous
countries in the world are at this moment
under the curse of compulsory paper-money,
excessively depreciated :
Brazil 50 percent. depreciation.
United States 9 per cent, depreciation.
Turkey 20 percent, depreciation.
Italy 15 percent, depreciation.
Rimma 12 percent, depre iation.
Austria 10 percent, depreciation.
A Significant Threat. -The New York
Evening News, of the 2lstinst., says :
There is a fellow in the Tribune office who
is allowed to write au editorial now and then,
and, for tbe sake of being witty, he frequent ly
uses tho name of the editor of this paper in
•some unpleasant connection. We cannot
conceive why he does so, unless it is because
we had to discharge him from our employ
for pillering money to give to negro wenches.
Unless the directors of the Tribune direct
this fellow to discontinue such remarks, we
propose to take up the private acre ol each
of them. It will both be instructive and
amusing.
The Attempt upon tub Life of Fringe
Alfred.—London, April 25.—Further par
ticulars of the attempted assassination of
Prinoe Alfred have been received. The cul
prit was an Irishman named Farrell, who is
kuowu to be connected with the Fenian or
gaoizatioD. Farrell shot the Prince iu the
hack on the 12th of March at Sydney, Aus
tralia. The ball was not extracted from the
« ouud until two days afterwards. Tbe wound
dangerous and painful, but the Priuce i»
doing well—beyond even the hopes of his
physician. His recovery will necessarily be
►low. According to the advice of his medi
cal attendants tbe Prince sailed for England.
Colored Conservatives.—It is ftcceriing-
ly gratify lug to uote the large colored vote
the Conservative ticket ia receiving in Geor
gia. A good many colored men in North
and South Carolina, and here in our own
State, have also sided with their own peo
ple against the interloping carpet baggers
and native mean whiles. Georgia, however,
is ahead in colored Conservatives. Thcie
seems to be something of organization
among them, also, and they show a determi
nation to exercise tbe right of franchise, re
gardless of Radical threats. This conver
sion to Conservatism is one of the most, in
deed, we might say the most re assuring
signs of the timet* in this unfortunate South
ern laud. We bad little doubt that a large
body, if not a majority of the negro popula
tion", would have their eyes opened to the
degrading, ruinous and heartless uses to
which Radicalism was patting them, but we
did not expect that the spell wonld be thrown
off quite so soon. It is an imperative duty,
as well as to oar interest, to help the good
work all we can. We can do but little to
wards the recuperation of our materiul pros
perity, and socially we shall be living, as it
were, on the side of a slumbering volcano,
until tbero shall be political harmony be
tween the two races.—New Orleans Picayune.
“What is a Conservative 'This ques
tion is pnt by the New York Tribune, and
tbe New York Express answers in briefi by
saying that the Conservative is just tbe op
posite of tbe Radical, as tbe New York Ex
press in politics is just tbe opporile of the
New York Tribane. A Conservative seeks
to preserve and maintain the institutions of
the country, where a Radical seeks to break
them up and destroy them. In government,
the Conservative desires to keep what is tried
and good. In politics, he labors for the
public safety and to secure good order. He
believes in liberty, but it is liberty regulated
by law, by reasoo, and tbe greatest good of
the greatest number of people; in a word, b}’
tbe fitness of things. The Conservative, in
politics, is slso a States rights man, and holds
the States to be equal. He yields freely to
the Federal Government just what the Con
stiuition, interpreted according to its mean
ing, sad the men who framed It yield, no
more, no lest. In society, the Conservative
opposes all those ioaovations which seek to
undermine virtue in the people, honesty in
trade, decency among the few or tbe many.
It detests cant, hypocrisy, doable-dealing,
change for the love of change. As accord
ing to Bishop Taylor “the Holy Spirit is the
great conservative of the new life," so tbe
great conservative principle of both tbe old
and new Is to slaoa by what is safe, trothful
and just in the government ot States and iu
the administration of every duty which de
volves a poo sooiety or people. The Tribune,
of course, does not comprehend Conserva
tives, but it does comprehend the rash, d&sh
and smash which revolutionizes what is tried
and true, and pale in their place those nos
trums which to partake of and abide by is
certain death to goreromeoto, States and

TO 0 AS COXS UME US :
The heavy burden imposed upon large oommmnl-
tie* by the coat of Gaa, has been for year* the cause
of great oompialnt No substitute for Oaa baa been
found to answer tue requirement* of ckaullne** aud
conveuicnoe, and the evil haa been borne because
unavoidable.
Wh now offer a remedy in the Savannah Improved
Gas Light Company's Apparatus, by which tbe price
of light is much reduced and a better article far-
nished, without in any degree lessening tbe advan
tage* of Oas. We have carefully examined tbe
operations of this Improvement elsewhere before wa
purchased the right for this city, and after having
tested thoroughly the practical workings of this ap
plication iu other cities, can conscientiously recom
mend tt to all wno desire a good and cheap light.
Our improvement constats in simply passing tba
ordinary Gas, after it laavaa the metra, through an
apparatus which enriches it, thereby enabling us to
substitute burners of much less capacity—say those
coosQining three cubio feet ot Gaa per hour, for those
burners now in oonataut uae burning Irom six to
eight cubic leet of Q»a per hour Therefore we must
necessarily decrease the c. nsumptton fifty per cent,
aud with thte diminution furnlahing at least 10 pe*
cent, more light.
For further information, we invite those Interested
to call at our office in Sorrell's Building, second floor,
end we will be happy to exhibit and explain the light.
We are prepared to introdQo* this impiovement
promptly*
