the prospect for a clear day. They found that the

THE UNION SOCIETY.
' Be-

siguify'ng “House of Morey,” is located in a braoti-
ul grove about tea miles from tbe city. Here tbe
Society ^ave an Orphan School, at which there are
twenty-foijr orphans, who are weU treated and edu
cated. Ths chool was instituted in 1737 by Bev. Geo.
Whitfield ao^ the Hon. James Haberaham. The Bo
oty which now has the acho >l under Its mausge-
tn.nt was organized in 1760. We learn from some
data before us that in that year there was a society In
this Place, composed or Scotch emigrants, the par
ticular objects ol which a*e not kuown; bnt probably
combining enfertaiument and charity. It was, how-
eve , too exclu ive and national in its character to ad
mit as members those not of the same extraction,
his circutustince flret gave rise to what was termed
tlnb— a term, by the way. which according. to the
opm&r vocabulary of our day, has somewhat de/rc-
ciatel In it* moaning, from lw auc e.it nsago. This
club waa composed of five gentleman. They pro
posed. for it* leading object, the education oforphau
children, in indigent circuinstances. For tbe pur
pose of raising the means, each (gem ier was requir-
l to contribute Iwj pence, weekly. This was, in-
teed, a small beginning. The ternu^. f membership.
Rowever, were gradually increased, when iu lift}
£5 6*. and the following year the autn of $3 wm levied
aa annual Ux upon each member towards the
foods or the Society, lo 1793 the tmUoi of about
thirty scholars was paid by this goclety, which then
consisted of sixty-six member*.
At what time this duo, as U was at first o tiled, was
regularly organized Into a Society, it does not appear;
but It wga uot 1 mg alter Its origin. Its flrat Presi
dent ha* not been ascertained. Its flret ffeei etary
waa Peter Gandy, s teacher of youth. The tple it
assumed, when organized, was tUs St. George's So
ciety. Bence its anniversaries have always been
held on tbe twenty-third of April, the calendar flay

men ofjiot dutinct religious denomtnaliont. Since
hat time the Society has had varied aucoaas, once
numbering eight hundred members; at another time
during the revolution, four members. It now has
over five huudrej, and receiyad i Dirty new members
last year. Tbe amount of good it has accomplished

THB exekcibes.
Shortly after eleven o’clock, the members of th.-
Society assembled In ihe school house and were
called to order by CoL Wadley, the President.
The minutes of the last meeting, at which tbe reso
iDtion pos'poning the celebration of (be anniveiosry
until tbe 29th, (yesterday; cm account of the election,
were read and approved.
Mr. J. 8. ¥. Lancaster, who has had • great deal of
experience In the management of children, was re
quested io give his views in regard to Ifee operations
of ih= school, aud make any suggestions he thought
proper.
He assented, and in a few remarks made many use
ful suggestions He said that the 8oci< ty was foituua.e
in haviug the services of tbe present Superintendent,
Bev. Mr. Brown, who was iu every way qualified to
discharge the dalles of hie offl :e. He thought thai
some physicians should be placed upon tbe Board of
Managers to look alter the school, aud adopt such
meat) urea as would best conduce to the he ait a of the
orphans. He said that better buildings should be
erected for the use of trie school, us these were hardly
comfortable, stating that good buildings had a good
influence upon its inmates; that's good buddlug did
more to restrain vices and inculcate moral ideas, than
imagined.
On motion, the subject was referred to the Board of
M laagers, and a discusoiou of private matters of the
school ensued.
Toe Society passed a vote approving the actios' of
tbe Board of Managers.
This over, the Sue sty adjourned to the grovf in
the centre of the grounds, wheie All of the l&dies nod
the gentiemen not members of the Society, had
assembled.
Occupying the stand were President Wa'ley, ex
residents Walker and Cooper, Vice President Slats,
M rangers JL Psde ford, Octavos L’ouen, A. Minis, Hie
Secretary, Mr. J. T, Thomas, Bev. D- M. Gilbert and
H >n. Henry B. Jackson.
After s delay of a few minutes, the anniversary ex
ercises were opened with prayer by the Rev. D M-
Gi.b )rt, of the Lutheran Church of this city.
The PreaideDt then read his anuual report, from
which we make the .'oliowing extract:

The report sia es that at the last anniversary there
were tnsnty-iwo boys who had b:en taken by tbe

osliont repast. They then scatters! through the
grove in couples or small parties aud whiled away
the hours in pleasant conversation. A number con-
gr.-gatel in the house of tne Superinteudenr, and
were entertalued with some delightful music by the
Quartette Club.
It was a pleasant sight to watch the various groups
aud varied scenes. Tue trees were clothud in their
full grejn drees; flowers bloomed everywhere, dlr-
p! lying the riches: colors, us well as the most deli
cate tiuts. The air was rich with a fragrance which
the perfumer's art cannot imitate; the woods re
sounded with merry peals of laughter, which Indi
cated taut the young had invited themselves to mirth
and pleasure, and that those of riper years had laid
avlde tbe cares of life for tho enjoyment of a happy
hoar; and at intervals the rich notea from a >me
ge u sang by the Qaarette Club came 1! rating on ti e
air—
"Hark ! the numbers soft and clear

The assemblage s r ent the hours pleasantly, and as
the day-god whs gathering arouud him his robes of
crimson aad purplntnd slowly descend iug tue golden
at airway of the West, the fe-tivuieg closed, and the
gay revellers retu r ued to thei. homes.

Exercises at Ihe Armory Hail.
The continued uxercisee connected with the examina
tion of the Pa Dir. Szhoote‘01 the city of Savannah were
conducted yesterday at the Armory Hall, which
hu.kimg is appropriated to the Intermediate and
Primary D partineut ol the ejatem of public in
struction, organized aud sustained by the people Of
8*vannah.
Tlie whole system is under the control of Mr.
Baruard Mailon, whose experience aud position has
given tone aud character to the effort* made by the
community to educate properly the rising genera
tion, who, in coming years, will be the meu and
women of ihe republic.
Apathy op au occasion of this kind might well be
considered a crime, but irom tbe interest manifested
by parent*, guardians apd teachers on the occasion,
we hazard the prediction that oat of the multitude of
hesltuy, rosy cbildhuod assembled at Armory Hall
yesterday, will spiipg the future ruisra aud lights of
this proud State—Georgia.
In the Intermediate Department there are three
c'asses, aud the rauie number tu the Primary. Miss
Davenport is the principal of the Pi imary Depart
ment, assisted by Mis* Harden and Miss Carter, all
competent, faithful and living instructors to the in
teresting change comini ted to their c*ie.
Tue Intermediate Department is presided over by
Mr. J. E. Way, With Miss Bourqum and Miss Gould
as assistants.
„ The exercises of the examination were conducted
by the teacheis, and embraced the u-ual routine of,
reading, spelling, gisir,mar, geography, arithmetic,
and relocations iu prose and poetry, infera),arsed
with binging.
Parents seem to have taken much interest in the
examination, and one could not but feel pleasurable
emotion-when gazing upon ihe happy end healthy
face* aud forms of childhood, in the various stages
of growth, aa their lithe forms and smiling laces an-
avrered to the varleMi -calls made upon them during
is exercises of the day.
Especially were we.enraptured on viaitiug the room
of Miss Carter, who, to the experience of e teacher
adds the discipline of a mentor. Tne bright array oi
Soys and girls, not aba*hed by visitor*, but going
their exercises in reading, spelling and mental arith
metic with the ease end cons lousneas of being per
feet in these lessons.
The examination at Armory Hell proved two things
which teacher* and educationists have vainly tried
to so.'ve in part generations,' namely—tbe establ ah-
meat of thit mutual love, confidence, and respect
betweendecebets and pupils, without which all ed
ucational projects ate vain and futile.
What school.boy or g^rl who bos passed tbe period
allott d to' happy school day*, but recollect* the
plaint of tho student under the old regime:
"I love mv master and my school fall well.

But caouot bear to read, aud write, aud spell;

But sliU more eea&UM, try to shun the cane! ”
Love conquers uistlnct; love conquers intellect;
and the great secret of modern educational move
ments is the introduction of the lew of Love in the
school room.
There were many parents present, ends few of those
whose presence would give character to such exhlbi
.ton*. Among them we.cannot foil to recognise Dr.
Arnold, whose unceasing efforts iu behalf of every
public interest identifiel wuh the progress of the
rising generation, and the beet interests of the com
munity, ha* made Uie name synonymous with philan
thropy.
We would fain speak of the Inppy hoys and girls in
Die various class but space forbids enumerating
their excellenc es or detect*. Wectn only offer ai
advice, knowing that most of the pupil* in the school
it Armory H«p' can re td, that they strive to please

that when those teachers, trleods and parents have
passe! away they wiil b; tbe father* and mother* in

shape of pieces oi bagging had been pl tced at the

who originated the scheme. When the fire was dii
covered it was making rapid headway, and was only
squelched by the assiduous exertions of Mr McHngh
who discovered it.
A subsequent examination revealed the fact that
fhe k piece* of canvass or bagging, which had been
placed before the window had upon them tho name
of tbe tenaut, the keeper oi tne grocery iu the north
tenement of the but.ding. His msurauce on stock
largely exceeded the stock on hand.
Under these circumstances, he was arrested, and
the proof wi'l be forthcoming that to secure a f w
