— “The Life and Passion of our Savior
Jesus Christ” is the title of a dramatic per
formance given in a church on the Rhine.
—An Alabama carpet-bagger has assessed
the forty boys in his negro school 25 cents
each to buy a “water-bucket.”
—An exchange suggests that druggists are
indictable for selling blisters, under General
idea order against inflammatory pla
cards.
* —A soaker in Cleveland took fire from
tb- iume9 of his breath as be went to
lig it bis pipe and rapidly consumed. Benzine
is dangerous.
—Archduke Ernest meditates following the
< x miple of his brother Henry, and marrying
a - ulynotof noble birth. Francis Joseph

-Gonzales, one of the early settlers of
T= was killed by robbers some forty
y, i ->• ago, but his murderers got nothing, as
h< had taken the precaution to bury his
tr -are. It has just been dug up, $5,000 in
^1 \ cau dollars, by a lucky fellow who dis
covered the secret of its hiding place.
—A Prussian woman has revealed the fact,
upon her death-bed, that she substituted
her own child for the infant of a Countess,
in whose employ she was some thirty years
ago. Both are alive, aud married in ac
cordance with their widely different stations,
and the muddle is as bad as can be.
Eleven shad were eaten in Hartford on
Wednesday at an expense to the man who
Caught them of more than $100. A friendly
neighbor saw him as he netted them at Say-
brook between Saturday night and Monday
morniug. and took away his margin for a
profit by a prosecution.
--“What is the reason you go so slow over
the plauk road, driver T' a traveller in
Ohio to a stage driver. “The horses wouldn’t
go faster if 1 were to whip them all the time.”
“Why so ?” “Because they know the pluuk
road is only six miles long, aud they want to
spin it out as long as they can.”
—An omnibus load of passengers were
arrested on Tuesday, iu Boston, and searched
to find a lady’s pocket-book, which had
been straugely abstracted. As they tiled
into the station-house, the pickpocket was
shrewd euough to drop the stolen article
into the straw, where, after the fun of the
search, it was found.
—A Florence correspondent speaks of a
figure of America now being completed by
the sculptor Mead for a soldiers’ monument
in Vermont. It is a proud, defiant Titaness,
with the eagle at her feet and a sword in her
hand. The profile of the face is superb,
though it belongs to the Southern rather than
to the Northern order of beauty. The shoul
ders are thrown back, the bosom slightly ad
vanced, and the whole figure thus acquires
an air of power, of majesty, of fearless inde
pendence, which is truly imposing.
—A Radical editor, newly imported from
Massachusetts, undertook to give the peo
ple of Kansas City, Missouri, a practical
lesson in negro equality one day last week.
He presented a negro with a ticket to some
amusement in Frauk’s Hall, in order to
make a case for judicial decision. The ne
gro went to the show, and was led out by a
Radical constable. The offloer was tried
and acquitted by a Radical jury and Rad
ical justice. Radicalism out West differs
sentimentally from Southern scalawaggery.
