Arrival of the Guest*—Order of the Dsy,
Etc., Etc.
The anniversary celebration or the Savannah Fire
Department will take place today. It promises to
bo one of, if not the grandest occasion of the kind
that ever occurred in the Southern States.
ABBIVAL OF THE GUESTS.
--Atone o’clock yesterday the Committee appointed
from each of the Are companies of the dty assembled
at the depot of the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad to re.
ceive tne delegation irom the Neptune Fire Company
of ThomasviUe. The train arrived on time oontain*
iug the anxiously 1 coked for delegation, who were
received by President Dixon, of the Mechanics' Hook
and Ladder Company, and were escorted to their
quarters at the Pnlaeki House.
Later in the day, about five o'clock, the Metropoli
tan Company commenced to assemble at their engine
room, preparatory to going to the depot of th* Cen
tral Railroad to receive their guests—the Vigilant,
No. 3, an$ Georgia, Independent, of Augusta. As
sembled with them were live members of each of
the other companies. A little before six o'clock the
company and tha committees, under the command
of Captain John B. Dillon, of the Metropolitan,
preceded by the Washington cornet band, under
the leadership of Robert Lowe, marched to the depot,
and occupied the southern platform.
They did not wait long. In a few minutes after
their arrival the shrill whistle in the dlatanoe an
nounced th*t the train was speeding elong towards
tbo36 who were impatiently awaiting to welcome her
living freight. It soon came whirling In, and amid
the inspiring strains of Dixie, the waving of hand-
kerchiefs and the cheers if the Savannah firemen,
stopped.
So ire delay ensued while the visiting companies
formed at the lower end of the train. After forming
they m irehed to where the city firemen were drawn
up, who, as they passed, gave three cheers and a.
tiger fer each.
After silence was restored, Mr. Wm. N. Yallean, of
the Metropolitan, stepped forward and spoke in sub-
as follows :

Heeting of Oglethorpe Fire Company this morning at
Gentlemen of Vie Georgia and Vigilant Fire Compa

hands,*1 do s.) u,ost cheerfully, most heartily. But I
wars you that difficulties and dangers beset your
path. The Ku Kiux Kian, I understand, have gone.
But there ate bushwhackers in Lho bushe9, and many
of you may fall by the wayside. It you would not be
false to the girls you left behind you encase your
hearts in triple links of steal, for the bright eyes of
the girls of onr city will be on you, and from
as fr .m the firemau, you will receive a warm we.

City.
Mr J. C. C. Blsck.of the Vigilants. stepped to the
front or the companies, and substantially said :
Gentlemen: Accept onr prolonades'. thanks for the
curdiai welcome with which you have greeted u-», and
you, sir, our high admiration for the happy aty .e in
which you nave been pleased to convey it. We have
anxiously looked forward to this meeting with you,
because we cannot feel that we are In Ibe midst of
viraugere. Animated by the same noble purpose we
have stood together iu tne same grand struggle alike;
ue have exulted in its victonos, and alike have been
depressed by its defeats. Thoagti the star that arose
so revplendently upon the field of Manassas sank in
gloom like the departed sun, it left its glory behind,
and a u are united in a common bond by its sacred
memories. The past of your city is glorious. Her
present ranks her the grand commercial mart and
ihe proud metropolis of the Empire State. You to
day are making a history worthy the illustrious ones
who have gone before; and in tu.ure age., when the
student wauders over your past, upon its brightest
pages he will find recoraed the vigilance and effici
ency of your Fire Department, and in its brightest
letters the gallantry of those whose guests «e are to

Master H. Farmer was called to the Chair, and the

ent and rtq iesle.1 them to see th it their children at
tended school reguiarJv. The en jeess ot this school
in a great measure, said he, attributable to the tact
that the majority were punctual aud regular attend*
ante. Success depends greatly upon regularity. Great
results are not so easily accomplished by learning a
great deal every now and then as' by learning a little
every day. With a stirring appoal to the parents to
attend to ibis matter he concluded, and called upon
Mr. Porter.
Mr. Portor said lie was of ths same opinion as the
President of the Board of Education aud the Super
intendent of the Schools, which was that the scholars
did credit to themselves and to their teachers. They
have improved their advantages, and Savannah is
proud of her public schools, her teachers, and ectiol-
are. They are her jewels. Ha concluded his’remarks
with some gm>d advice.
Rev. Mr. Landrum was called upon. He tpoke
highly of tho success or the scholars and also of the
teachers. They were selected by the Board with
great c-re. They went to wotk in the quirry of edu
cation and formed and fashioned yonr minds, and to
day show fine specimens of their work. Iu yoar de
bate to-day I listened attentively. Many of you said
that woman was mentally the inferior of man, t' at
man was far more eloquent, and, in many points, the
superior. You think now man is more eloquent than
woman. Do not be discouraged my young 1 idles.
They will see the day when one monosyllable from
your lips will b i more eloquent to them than any elo
quence from the lips of those gltted men of whom
they have boasted. This happy hit closed the ex r-
cises up stairs.
Down stairs ts the

Under the charge Of Mr. B. M.Zttler and Mien E.Frew.
There are one hundred boys in this school. The
blackboards in tho room bore tbe inscription; “Do
unto othe.a 83 you would they should do unto you.’*
Our watchwords: “Kindness. Cheerfulness and'Pro
gress;” and “Always speak the truth.”
The ex rcises here commenced at 9 o'clock. After
Z thorough examination in their various studies, the
declamation exercises commenced. The following
is a list of pie pieces declaimed, and the names ol
the declaimers:
“Stand Beside tho Banner,” by Master Wiley Ar
den; “The Victim," by Master Ben Henderson ; “In
dian Chief,” by Henry Hogg; “My Nattoe ■iteud," by
Master Maurice; “Catalina's Address,” by Master
Estis Buckner; "A Maseacre.” by Master R. Beogdec;
■•’Benzi’s Address to the Romans,” by Master jack
Chaplin; “Fight of JJuseogee Ipdiaus,” by Master
Willie Fisks “Battle Prayer,'* by Master Tom Ney.
lOr. 'Jr
After the declamation, Dr. Arnold, in a uv re
marks highly commended the pupils lor the faithlul-
ness with which th* y had prosecuted their studies.
The examinations of the last few days has demon-
Crated that the Public Schools he e^are^a sficcess.
We have visited many of the Northern schools and
witnessed their examinations, and nowhere have we
seen as willing and cimpotent asst of toys and girls
or aa able teachers as here in Savannah.’.
After an announcement by Superintendent Malloa,
that * pic nic would be given by the scholars on
Thursday next, the exercise* were concluded.
The superintendent and teachers have reason to he
proud of the proficiency which their pupils have ex
hibited in the examinations of the last few days.

have received s corrected report ofrihe amount of
this clara of cotton received over Atlantio and Gulf
Road and other sources from the 1st of Septembtr
last, and have now to add to our re&ipts not pre

ot 1.030 bales, allowing tor the receipts and exports
of tha fortnight. This will leave a stock oa hand and
on shipboard of 63S bales, and we have verified these
