The Freshet in Southern Georgia..—The
The late heavy rains have done great damage
to the roads, bridges and crops in Southern
Georgia. From the Eainbridge Ar^us, of Sat
urday, we learn that the water in the river was
very high and still rising. Two of the middle
piers of the new bridge were swept away and
the others were in danger. The railroad em
bankment was washed away in many places,
and it was feared that the water would break
through the embankment near the wharf, The
railroad bridge over the Withlacoochee was
carried away anil other damage done to the
road, interrupting railroad communication. The
crops in the b-.ttom lands and in some of the
uplands bad been generally damaged, so that
m many instances replanting wou.d be neces-
*aiy.
Japanese Revenge.—A story is told bv
Titingb, in his Japanese annals, which
6how? the rigor of his restraint, tho severity
witb which small delinquencies are punished,
ar>d the impunity allowed to revenge. A f
intervals p.,sts tue established along the pub
lic road, and a guard sot to enforce the in
terdict against me passing of women. One
of these is at the mount Fakone, a slo t dis
tance Irom Miako, on the road to Yeddo- An
inhabitant of Yeddo, named Fiyosayemon, a
widower, with two children, a girl and a
boy, was called to a distance on business.
He was poor, and knew not how to provide
lor hia children in his absence and this law
would not allow of his taking the gill with
him. He, however, resolved upon a strata
gem. aud dressing his girl in boy’s clothes,
passed the guard at Fakone unsuspected
He was rejoicing in his success wheu a man
who knew what children he had, joined him,
congratulated him on his good lack," and
asked lor something to buy drink. The
alt'rmed father offered a trifle. The man
demanded a sum beyond his means, A
quarrel ensued, the man ran back to tht
guard, and gave information of the trick that
had been played upon them. The whole
fuard were thuuderstruck. If the informc-
s;ioke tne truth, and the affair should be disr
covered, all their lives would be forfeited.
Vet it was unavo dable to send a party to ap
prehend the offender, and thus to bring upon
taennelyes the dreadful penalty. The com
manding officer, however, resolved to save
biuiaelf by another trick.
He delayed the party to be detached in
pursuit a sufficient time to allow a messen
ger with a little boy to overtake the offend
ing traveller. The messecg r found Fiyo-
sayemon and his children taking food at an
itm. lie told of the information that had
been given, of the pursuit and danger, of
fered the boy as temporary substitute for the
K'fi at the examination to come off, and told
the father that, when the falsehood of the
charge should be proved by both the children
appearing to be boys he might fairly fly into
such a rage as to kill his accuser. The plan
Was of course approved. The dilatory guard
snon arrived, surrounded the house, seized
upnn Fiyosayemou and the children, and
gladly announced that they were both boys.
The informer declared that some imposition
had been practiced, which the accused, in
diguaotly resenting, drew hia sword, and
cut off the informer’s head. The guard de
clared that such a liar had only m e t bis just
deserts, and returned to their posts, while
the traveller look his daughter and went on
his journey.
