Tragic Occurrence in North. Carolina
Surerai Men Shot—A Lady Burned to
Death.
’From the Goldsboro’ (N. C.) Rough Note#.]
Theie reaches us from au entirely reliable
source, the painful intelligence that on Sat
urday night last, the Sheriff of Pitt county,
ec.-oinpunied by several soldiers, proceeded
to th“ house ot Raddick C-vrney to arrest a
sou of that gentlemen upon a charge of hom
icide several months since. They reached
Mr. Curacy’s house about midnight, and de
manded a surrender, which was promptly
rtiused, and the attempt to break into the
hc-Ure was resisted, aad firing oc both sides
commenced.
U orge, a young Carney, was killed; Mr.
Wuiiehnret, sou-in-law of Raddick Carney,
was severely, if not mortally wounded; liad-
dick Cuney and MibS Perkins, daughter of
William Pe.kins, who were spending the
night at Mr. Carney’s are supposed to have
been buret in the house, fired by the attack
iog party. The dwelling and smoke-house,
with all the provisions, were consumed. Two
soldiers were killed, two wounded, and
the olficer soot turough tho flesh part of the
arm. Mr. ‘Whitehurst, was captured, and
Mrs. Carney and her daughter. Mra. White
hurst escaped from the burning building.
Tho Sheriff carried Mr. Whitehurst to
Greenville, and thus ended one of the mosi
b o^dy episodes ot this age in Eastern North
Carolina. , , .
We recollect disliuctly the charge made
months ago that young Carney had killed an
officer who had attempted to go up-atairs
wueu warned not to do so; but thought tho
case had been adjudicated long since. It is
remarkable that the atte mpt to arrest him
should have been made at the dead hour ot
the night, when it ia well known that ho has
been iu the habit, openly and frequently, ot
going to Greenville and other public places
in the country, for months past.

Daring Attempt to Destroy Thomsivllle
fit 391 [ JJI8 A \
On Thursday night last, near midnight, the
alarm of fire aroused our citizens, who rushed
forth to find the old stable' building near the
residence of Mr. T. J. McBain, at the east end
of Broad street, completely enveloped in fiames.
Neptune Fire Company soon arrived upon the
spot, and, with the valuable aid of other citi
zens, succeeded in confining’the 'flames to the
old stable, which was entirely consumed.
Scarcely had, they saved the dwelling houfee of
Mr. McBain, when another alarm was given up
town, and immediately the fiames burst through
the roof of a barb connected with the livery
stables kept by Major Win. Stegall, consuming
the barn with a large quantity of com, but
again prevented from spreading by the vigi
lance and activity of the Fire Company, ably
seconded by soldiers and citizens. An alarm
was now sounded towards the centre of the
chief business block on Broad street, and fire
was discovered in rear of the old wood ware
house of Messrs. AS. Remin£tojnlfjfc,Son, but as
this fire had only commenced to •burn, is was
extinguished without damage. Still another
alarm was given about daylight, and the fire
found '|obe an attempt to burn a stable on the
premise^bf Mr. J. S. Merrill, north-west from
the Presbyterian Church,. This was likewise
extinguished before any damage resulted.
Duriiig the excitement of the fires mentioned,
strenuous efforts were being made by the Mayor,
Marshal, police and military under Lieut. John
son, commanding post, to overtake and arrest
the incendiaries, and one waS 1 fired at by a sol
dier in making his escape from the scene of the
burning of Mr. Stegall’s barn. Two others
were hotly pursued from a stable in the rear of
Messrs. Sckiff & Brother’s store, which they
were preparing to fire, and bold attempts to
fire other portions of the town were prevented
by the timely arrival of police forces, rapidly
distributed bv Lieut. Johnson.
None of the perpetrators, however, were
arrested during the night ; but a numerous
body of colored men, estimated at from one
to three hundred persons, armed and very
much excited, had assembled at the place ot
residence of Jacob Wade, a colored preacher,
one of the managers ot the election which had
just closed, and who held the charge o£ the
ballot-box each night during the Election This
assembly was in the' immediate vicinity of the
first fire near the residehoc of Mr. McBain, aud
though called upon by members ot the Fire
Company, in passing, they positively refused to
aid in extinguishing the flames.
Lieut. Johnson promptly dispersed them
with the soldiers under his command, and
transferred the ballot-box, which they declared
they assembled to defend against the Ku-Klux-
Klan, to safet hands. White men were among
them at different times, and who are supposed
have counseled them in the course they
pursued. The object of this assembly, we
are informed, was to repc-1 a contemplated raid
on Wade s premises by "sixty of the Ku-Klux
Klan mounted on white horses,” with the new
of captriring that eminent Divine and carrying
off in triumph the precious four day’s deposit
>f “flee suffrages,” which, that individual
shielded under the strong arm of colored pa
triotism.—Enterprise, 26th vft.
Mb. Lincoln on Cabpet-Bagqebs.—When
it was proposed to reconstruct Louisiana
during the war, and fill tbo offices of that
State and its representation in Congress
with foreiga adventurers, “Old Abe" wrote
the following letter, which is applicable to
these times. Under date of November 21,
1803 Mr Lincoln wrote as follows: %
■Dear Sir: Dr. Kennedy, bearer of tbis,
ha9 some apprehension that Federal officers,
cot citzens of L 'uisiana, may be set up as
candidates for Coegress in that 8tate. Ia
ffiy view, there could be no possible object
in such an election. We do not particularly
heed members of Congress from those States
to enable us to get along with legislation
here. What we do want is conclusive evi
dence that respectable citizens of Louisiana
a *e willing to be members of Congress, and
to swear support to the Constiiu ion; and
that other respectable citizens there are will
'®g to vote for them and send them. T(
"end a parcel of Northern men here as rep
resentatives, elected, as would be understood
(and perhaps leally so), at the point of the
bayonet, would be disgraceful and outrage
ous; and were I a member of Congfe*» he .
I would vote against admitting any such
braa to a seat

Lager Beer
By Josh Bili ings.
I have finally cum tew the conclusion that
lager beer as a beverage is not intoxicating.
I have bin told so by a German who eod
he bed drunk it awl nite long, just to try
he experiment, a«cl was obliged to go borne
jotirdly sober iii llie morning. Lhav seep
this same man drink sixteen glasses, and if
he was drank, it was in german, and nobo ly
could understand it. It is proper enutf to
slate that this man kept a lager beer saloou,
and could hav no object in stating what was
not strictly thus.
I believed him tew the full extent ov my
ability. 1 never drank but three glasses ov
larger beer, in mi life, and that made mi bed
untwist as tho it was hung on the end of a
string, but i was told it was owin to mi bile
being out ov pface; and i gueBa it was so, for
i never biled over wuss than i did when 1 got
uum that nite. Mi wife thot thati was going
tew die, and i was afraid that i shonidn't for it
did seem as tho every thing i had ever eaten
in mi life was cummin to the surface, and i
so really believe that if ml wile hadn t pull-
id off mi boots jest as she did, they would
hav cum tbunderia up too,
O! how sick i was! 14 yeara ago, aud i can
taste it now.
I never had so much experience m so
short a time. . * ; . _
If enuy mau shud tell me that lager beer
was not intoxicating, I shud believe him j
but if he shud tell me that i wasn t drunk
that nite, but that mi stnmmuck was out ov
order, i shud ask him tew state over a tew
words, jest how a man felt and acted when
he was well setup. .
ir i wasn’t drunk that nite i had sum ov
the most natural simptuma that a man ever
had, and kep sober.
In the first place it was about 80 rods from
where i drank tbe lager . beer lo mi house,
and i was over 2 hours on the road, end had
a hold bustid I bio each one ov mi panlloons
neez, and didn't have any hat, and tried to
open the door by the bell-pull, and hickup-
ned awfully, and’ aaw everything in the
room trying to get on the back ov me; and
in settiug down in a chair i didn t wait long
enough tor it to git exactly under me when
it was going roued, and i set down a httie
too soon and missed ibe chair about 12 inch
es. and couldn't git up soon jnuff to take the
next one that cum along, and that am t awl,
mi wife sed i was as drank as a beest, ami
t,s i sed before, began to spin up things free-
ly. • - i;
If lager beer 1z not inl<fcrfc*tiiig, it uaed
me most almighty tbat i know.
Still i hardly think that lager beer iz in
toxicating, for i have been told to; and i am
probably the only man living who ever drank
tnny when his life wa9 not piuiap*
l don’t want lo say enny thing again a
harmless teihperence bevridge, but if i eyer
drink any more, it wiil be, with my hands
tied behind me, and my mouth pried open.
I don’t think lager beet is intoxicating,
but if i remember right, I think it tastes to
me like a «lass of soap suds, that a pickle
had bin put tew soak in.
