ABsaulnatlsn of P’.TnCe Alfred.
London, April 14—Midnight.— Late and
startling intelligence has just been received in
this city from Australia.
Prince Alfred, who is visiting Sidney, was
shot and dangerously wounded by an un
known person.
The would-be assassin, wfio was said to be
a Fenian, was promptly arrested.
The Prioce, according to the last advices,
was slowly recovering.
Prince Alfred is the fourth child of Queen
Victoria, aud was born in 1844, which makes
him a young man of twenty-four now.
From bis very earliest years he has been
generally regarded as the flower of the fami
ly, since he has displayed far more intelli
gence, aptitu ie for lekming, and general good
sense than his elder brother, the Prince of
Wales. There are numerous tales on record
of the thrashings he frequently bestowed up
on his big brother in their boyish days. It
is quite certain that he has been far more
popular with the people than any other of
the Queen’s children. Prinoe Alfred was
theoretically devoted to the navy, and now
holds the rank of a captain in the Royal
Navy, and commands the steam frigate Ga
latea. When he attained his majority he
was created Duke of Ediabarg, the first
English Prince who has held that title and
he is also heir-apparent to his father’s title
nf Duke of Sare-Ooburg Gotha. Prince Al
fred has travelled throughout Europe, and in
18G1 he visited New Brunswick and other
British Provinces on the Atlantic coast but
did not come to the United States. Since
then he has sailed to South America and bis
warm reception by the Emperor of Brazil
will be remembered. In 1862 there was
quite a demonstration in Greece in favor of
his accession to the then vacant Ihroue, and
the question was much agitated in the Eng
lish papers. Within the past two or three
years he has been regarded as rather a wild
young man, and his recent conduct at Sid
ney, Melbourne, and Victoria has been the
subject of some very sharp comment there
and in the English papers. It i9 customary
now-a-days to charge every outrage upon an
English to Fenianism, but tuere are strong
probabilities that some irdiceet, if not im
proper act, on the p.ajrt ol the Prince may
have prompted the attempt to assassinate
him. No less than three attempts have been
made to assassinate Queen Victoria since the
commencement of her reign—one in June,
1840, by a crazy lad named Oxford; another
in May, 1842, by John Francis, whose sent
ence of haoging was commuted to transpor
tation, and a third in July of the same year,
by J. W. Bean, who was imprisoned eighteen
mouths therefor. It is gratifying that the
latest account of the condition of Prince Al
fred speaks of his recovery as probable.

A Slam at the Carpet-Baggers.
Mr. Halstead, senior editor of the Cincinnati
Commercial, not haying the fear of Forney,
Bullock A Co. before his eyes, writes these
plain truths about that interesting class
yclept “carpet-baggers
There are alreAdy Senators here from Ar
kansas. The new South Carolina Senators
are expected soon to arrive. It is antici
pated that Republicans throughout the
North will, upon the appearance of these
men, break forth in songs of thanksgiving
over a restored Union, and of praise at the
faithful action of this wise Congress. We beg
to call a halt on that proposition. Do we want
any more rotten borough States in the Union?
Could anything be mere fatal to our perpet
ual public content and good order than the
admission of such States ? We have enough
of them now. Nevada and Nebraska, that
should yet for years have been Territories,
are as weighty in that Senate that proposes
to rule the nation, as New York and Ohio.
Now, there is no r jason to believe that the
persons presenting themselves here as
Senators of the Uniied States from Arkansas
and South Carolina, represent even the
negroes iu those States. They are adven
mid turers, representatives of little more than
their own audacity; and they will become,
if permitted to enter the Senate, the mo9t
abject of party serfs, because they will have
no possible vitality outside their party.
This may be a recommendation to Congress,
but 1 do not believe it ie to the people. It
the Arkansas and South Carolina reconstruct
lion is the sort of thing Ben Wade is wanted
in the White House to promote, the less we
have of it the better.
The Galaxy agrees with other intelligent
authorities in the opinion that the opera
called the “Grande Daohesse deGerolstein,”
which i9 now enjoying such a remarkable
run at New York, has nothing to recommend
it except its decided indecency. The most
“respectable” classes of society crowd its
representation night after night, solely, to
all appearance, because it ha9 a specimen of
“love-making of the most revolting nature.’’
The assinine heads ot families who take their
wives and daughters to this nasty perform
ance justify themselves by saying that “such
things are the go in Paris,” cat even having
sense or information enough to know that
the female portion of the audiences at suca
plays in Paris are very far from being the sis
ters and daughters of respectable families
or the wives ot anybody at all.
Courage, Friends, All Is not Lott.
The latest intelligence from much the largest
portion of the State leaves no doubt that the
vile work of the Atlanta Convention has been
made the fundamental law of Georgia, by the
treachery of her own sons.
Owing to the consolidated vote en mas3t of
the negroes on the seaboard, and defection of
many Democrats who voted for -Bullock be
cause they favored ratification, even the elec
tion of the noble Gordon is not certain, though
we do not concede his defeat. In the Senato
rial District, where the Express carpet bagger
and Blodgett reside, composed of Richmond,
Jefferson and Burke, their negro minions
muster a majority 5,000 strong, and Chatham
county also adds*1,800 to the number.
In poor old Liberty, too, once the seat of
education, elegance and refinement, but 140
whites are left to stem this filthy black tide
which swept away every land mark of thb past.
The remaiuder, eave three iugrates, were either
driven from their homes, dead, or disfijpnchised.
The approximate result as deduced from the
returns of 90 counties, gives Bullock a ma
jority of 2,263 votes. The remaining 42
counties may increase this, but at present even
the mostastute may be deceived in their cal
culations l he actual count can alone deter
mine the question. We hare neither space
nor heart at this time to publish the returns of
Medical.

We are also comforted with the knowledge
