did give publicity to such facts as were of common,
rumor in the local notice under tho above heodinf
on the day aud date mentioned in the card of Mr.
Tishler as a “few days since." “A guilty concience
aeecs no accuser," and the object of this publication
is to place upon record certain facts connected w'tb
that incendiary attempt, as would satisfy any
examining court that we were right In making the
expose, which Mr. Tishler, in his card, has wisely
considered as referring to bim.
1st. We never saw -ojr knew each s man as Mr.
Tishler. consequently there was no motive to assail
either the character or the good standing in the
mercantile community of the said Tishler.
21. The information upon which the local was
founded was gained not from detectives to "block
their game," but from a man known and honored,
with trusts Tar beyond policies of insurance, aud
who was iadorsecla8 one whose simple statement wa3
as good as Mr Tlah’er’s.
3d. The paragraph or local in question was de
signedly framed, to avoid a libellous action, and if
possible, bring out Mr. Tishler, whose name was
freely used publicly as a suspected party.
Now for the facta of the case;
1st Fact. Mr. Tishler’s Insured his stock of goods
for $5,000 in the agency of Mr. Wilbur, which policy
was in the hands of a third party, and kept in a distant
part of the city from the building which was fired, and
which po.icy was cancelled by the insurance office
btfr.re the local in the New and Herald appeared.
2J Fact. The fire was discovered at 514 o'clock, as
stated in the News and Herald report, aud was
found to have been set by an incendiary acquainted
with the house, its approaches, and bo forth.
31 Fact. (For which we give Mr. Tish.er tho bene
fit) The fire was discovered by Mr. Cooper, hot by
Mr.McHugh, as staled.
4th Fact. Tue paper f jund partially burned, with
which the fire was kindled, oore the marks of a
Zaineaville, Ohio, paper, of which perhaps Mr. Tiah--
ler is the only subscriber in Savannah.
G:a Fact, fhe screens ol cloth placed before the
door, undoubtedly to prevent the notice of the glare
from the etar outside, were of a character corres
ponding with certain pieces found under Mr. Tishler’s
counter, which had evidently b^en cut oat of the
pieces thus use l.
6ib Fact. Tho privy connecting Mr. Tishler’s with
the unoccupied tenement fired, on beiug examined,
Was round to coniain a kettie with turpentine, and
some of the same cloth used in shielding the glare
from tue outside world,
7th Fact. Mr. Tishler the day before the fire got
the key and went with Mrs. McHugh into the unoc-
copied house, and after inspecting the same, and
alter having locked the house, Mr. Tishler returned
to Mrs. McHugh, got the key, and went into the
house solus, saying lie had dropped hi3 handker
chief.
8;iiFact. Mr. Tishler’s stock was worth about
$300 and wa3 insured for $5,000, and Mr. Tishler had
made dec.arations of his inability to live in Savan
nah.
These are the facts, but the most promiuent fact
is the fact that Mr. Tishler has taken unto himself the
onus of guilt, whereas it does not so appear in the
local notice of the iucondiary attempt.
Several inaccuracies occurred, which could have
b:en corrected upon a proper Application by Mr.
Tishler; bu, under tae circumstances, we feel justi
fied lu still giving publicity to the current report os
published iu tha News and Herald.
Ouf duty has been performed. If the owner of the
buildings is satisfied-if the insurance companies
arc satisfied—if our citizens are satisfied—if a Jury
wouni be satisfied by the card of Air. Tishler, then
the News and Herald would be satisfied, and not
till then.

Knights of Pythias.—A new order, chari
table and beneficiary, is about beiug established in
the ciry of Sivasnah. The design of the institution,
as lav as we have been able to learn, are strictly so
cial. charitable and beneficial, irrespective of re-
ii,:lous or political opinions. Oae feature, however,
i® that numbers should be twenty-one years old and
wbi:e male citizens. The order was instituted in
ftulidelphia, and has extended to all the middle and
n esteru States. A deputation irom the Grand Lodge
will visit this city shortly for the purpose of initiating
tte members of the new Lodge.
Little Beggars.—There is a number of
tihle v.bite boys wandering about aud annoying
our citizens with applications for money, putting up
some pi eous taie of not being able to obtain work
wd of suffering for the necessaries of life. While
* e would neither do, nor say anything that would

Alexander Hardee’s Address fo the Col
Oiec! Conservatives.
The following address from Alexander Hardee,
(Secretary of the Sofciety), to tlie colored men of Sa
vannah was read at the colored Conservative meet
ing on Monday night last. It contains advice of vital
iuieieat to the colored znon, and shou-d be read by
ali oi them :
Fellow-Citizens : I trust it may not be out of place,
at a moment so mil o< interest to the colored people
of Savannah, to say u few word* as to tue real mo
tive aud objec’.B of our Association. Those who have
already allied themselves with us nave acted gener
ally in accordance with the dictates o‘ their hearts,
at the suggestions of tnelr own Intelligence, anu iu
obedience to conservative political principles hy
which they have long been a ,-tuated. But we have
in our community many worthy colored dozens, who
ihus far have stood aiool, woo have opposed us from
ignorance rather than intent, who have been de
ceived ty false ud tpecions arguments, and who
i»y franknew3 and conciliation can ba won over to
oar side. Let us, in the spirit of true conservatism,
address ourstlves to that class of our people, and
seek by fair argument and legitimate means >o weau
them away from principles aud leaders fatal to their
interests- It is aitegeu by those inimical to the ob
jects oi our Association that we /ire seeking by
bribery, a.d unfa r and Improper Influences, to con
trol the newly acquired franchises of the colored
people. It la our duty to dvny and di-prove ail aach
xalse allegations. We are no tecret league, bound
by mysterious oaths and asseUR-ii'ig clandestinely
u .der the protection of ditkaess. We do not fear
lh«* light— our deeds are fiot evti We convene in
public, our proceedings are open, and we invite
every colored conservative man to examine our Con
stitution, to investigate our- character, and. if his
heart an unbiassed judgment approve our designs,
to unite corduiiy with us. . • . ‘ . •
Many ol the colored people voted sgafiiat the Con
servative party at ibe recent election, but that i3 no
reason why we should refuse fo Xfcceive them into
our ranks; many who so voted have tbe interests of
this community at heart and will support a local Con
servative ticket. Others who acted from ignorance
have been or can bo persuaded to abandon the error
of their ways. All of us live in this community; we
love and honor it as onr city ^our hearts swal: with
nrlda ot its increase in sija find importance—at the
advancement of Hi commercial prosperity. We are
a ii dependent upon tbe good order, stability and buei-
uejs of the city for the comfort we en^oy and the
rood we put into onr months. Many of us have fami
lies dependent upon us for support. To whom
must We look for the means of maintain*

and a man of colored people, who ace refugee* from
other States and parts of this Btate, whoae affections
are not bound to ravannah; who have neither prop
erty, nor.business interest or influence here. On thi
other side we have the entire resident white popula-
tioa of the cicy—those gentlemen from the North
who will bring capital to us,-mad the larger portion of
the old and property-bo ding colored peopte. To
which of these parties must the laboring colored man
look for employment aud aid. Who own the houses;
who own the ships and Sieambe&’-t:? Who own the
drays? Who control and handle thq cotton? Tbe
colored people of Savannah cannot Uvq without the
aid of the business comn:unity. Even to-day a
