Attempt on the Lifb of a Policeman.—
Early yesterday morning Policeman Smith arrested a
suspicious character, a negro, who had in his posses
sion a bag of bacon and other article evidently stolen.

ing a large knife and making several passes, the last
of which took effect in the face of Mr. Smith, inflict-

Savannah, and to increase the efficiency of g»ia

Section L The Mayor end Aldermen of the city of
Savannah, in Council assembled, do berebv ordain.
That it ahali nut hereafter be law a for any organi
zation of firemen io have any thing to do or to be
connected with the 8^vannah File Department inde
pendently of and without theconaeLt oi the City
council, and Council shill hereafter use it* has ef
forts to pr vent the incorportion of any new fire com
pany In tbe city of Savannah, oat not to prevent ihe
renewal of any existing charier f a fire company.
section S. And It is farther ordained by the au
thority aforesaid, That hereafter every t ngine or
other article or thing used for the extinguishment e(
fire, and put into the service oi the city, shall, with
out respect to ownership, be conaide ea the property
of tbe city, &o far «a that the same shall never be
withdrawn from aerv.ee without thirty days previous
notice to the City Council; end every such engine or
article or thing as aioreaaid efraii be reoeiied into
eerrice a* afortsald only on the foregoing express

apparatus of any description anal, not hereafter be
assigned to any private work or enterprise, or need
thorein or be removed, or carried or placed beyond
the proper station assigned to it, witneut the written
consent of the Chief Fireman and the approval of
the Mayor.

trol or management of a steam fire engine phtil have
the right to elect its engineer, turner ihe fallowing
rules- Such company ahail nouiy the Oh.e' Fireman,
of such election, ana he shall at ome appoint a com
mittee oi three engineers, who than form as exam
ining ooa a; and if the engineer elected be found
competent, the Chief fireman ah. 11 approve the elec
tion and forthwith seed the action of the examining
board to Council lor continuation; and no person

on a pressure of more thin seventy pound* of steam,
unless ordered to do so by the Ch*i Fireman, under
