called at the residence of the writer of this, and pre
tending to be perfectly famished, solicited a quarter to
bny bread. He was taken iuto the kitchen, and a boun
tiful meal placed before hint but he could scarcely,man*
age to force down a mouthful, and being caught pock-,

drunk, in the warmth of his appeals to the servant
at the front door, pushed himself into the hall aa : £kr
aa the hat-tree, where he deposited his greasy, ragged
apology for a cap, ostensibly for the greater freedom;
of gesticulation. But in resuming his tile he acci

French relt. He was kicked down a long flight ol
steps, and comes no more. .
A charitable lady gave a little beggar; gftri a hat,
pair of shoe9 and dress to wear to Sunday-school.
The following day she saw the articles in a Secbnd-

found the mother drunk.
These, and a. hundred other instances < we could
name, show merely the necessity of cautious investi
gation to sift the chaff from the wheat in bestowing
chatities, or the money given will go to encourage the
very evils striven to be remedied. They do not mil-
tate at all against the practice of that benevolence
which is enjoined by the Scriptures, which is plainly
the duty of all who have means, but only shows the
necessity of careful discrimination. Oar benevolent
organizations attain this end, so for as they go, but
they do not relieve individuals.

Cotton.—The market continues dull and heavy.
The sales made to-day have been about lc off from
our last quotations. The transactions are, however,
too small to base quotations npon, from the fact that
most holders ask much higher prices. We therefore
decline giving quotations. ■»
The sales to-day have been as follows: 14 bales st
>, 1(9 at 29>£. Total, 203 bales.
Sea Islands.—Tbe sales to-day have been 13 bags
as follows: 1 bag at 60. 6at 72^, 7 at 85.
The receipts to-day amount to 315 bales.
Gold.—Steady; bought at 138, sold at 140@141.
Exchansk.—Sterling firm with light offering at 152
@152>a lor 60 day’s bills. New York light scarce;
bought at par, sold at M premium.
Bacon.—Some irregularity continues to exist in
this market, and salea are made at lower figures than
it would cose to replace from the North. The supply
of shoulders is light; sides are more plentifol; de
mand llmtted. We now quote: Shoulders, 15@15J£;
ribbed sides, 17>i@17 j^c; clear ribbed aides, lBtec;
clear sides, 18%@19c: buns, plain, 19@20c; can
vassed, 21@22c.
Ploub—Remains unchanged, though quotations in
tbe Northern and Western markets continue firm at
higher figures. The demand is fair and stocks are
somewhat reduced, as dealers have not confidence
that fall prices will be sustained, and are unwilling
to replace at present prices. We renew our quota
tion*; Northern super, $10 S0@11 50; extra, $iu 60@
14; family, $15@16; choice family in sacks, $8 60.
Georgia flour is mor * plentifol; moderate demand;

Grain.—The receipts of corn for tho week will foot
up 30,000 bnshela; tne demand is better, and it has
moved off quite freely at a concession of a few cents
per bushel. We now qnote Western by car load a*
$1 20@1 25. One large sale is reported at $1 30 from
store. Tne margin between Maryland and Tenueesee.
if any, is nominal, and they can be bought at very
nearly the same figures. The stock ol oata is light;
demand limited; telling in small lota from store at
$1 M#115. No wharf sales.
Rice.—Tbe receipts of rough rice daring the past
w«.ex nave been only 113 bushels, making a total of
40,301 bushels since tbe 1st of September. The stock
is l’gbt, there being oaiy the equivalent of 1,250
