000 worth ot rice last year.
—New York city is said to have become
one large boarding hoilse. The people can’t
aliord individual houses.
—Another case of a negro turning white
ia reported. For white men to turn black In
these days is still more common.

awoke from its slumbers, and is trying to
raise money to send more freedmen to Li
beria.
—The Georgia Legislature, as the returns
now stand, will have in it twenty-eight ne

Representatives.
—The receipts of grain at Alexandria, Vir
ginia, for the past year exceeded one and a
quarter million of bushels, and a large in

—The Pall Mall Gazette notices an Ameri
can invention of which we have seen no pre
vious mention. It i9 an artificial baby, and
is intended to promote the comfort of rail
way travellers. When wound up it produces
horrible cries, so that chance passengers
avoid the car in which they happen to be.
Prices range from $2 .00 to $15, and the ba
bies arc warranted for a year.
—A Texas paper notices the fact that
many new and valuable discoveries have
been made in tho South since the war. In

been worked for the first time. In Alabama
abundance of fine coal, in Louisiana vast
beds of salt, in Arkansas rich gold placers,
and in Texas, gold, lead, coal, copper, sil

The spirit of invention has also increased in
the South, and self-reliant enterprise has
been very largely developed. These are
cheering Higns for oor future.
