Til 111 DISHONORED BANNER,
ADAPTED FROM “THE AltEBICAK FhAd.*’
That banner, whose dim, waning light
Glints faintly on the trembling air.
Seemed filched from the robe of night,
Without one star of glory there 1
Erst glowed its folds with gorgeous dyes,
Like rayleta from the azure skies,
And gleamed its pure, celestial white
With streakings of the morning light;
l-’lag of the free heart’s hopes and home,
By augel hands to valor given 1
Its stars did light the welkin dome.
And all its hues were born in heaven;
Now on its folds ’tb unwilling sun
Sheds liugeriug rays of the evening’s dun,
Since late ’twas borne by tyrant’s hand
The symbol of his vandal band.
Majestic monarch or ths cloud 1
No morel thou reard’st on high tby form
Amid war's tempest howling loud,
Amid the hurtling death-shafts driven.
As though the hell-fiends of the storm
Had seized the thunderbolt* of Heaven I
While Freedom from her eyrie gazed,
Behold her banner of the free
Careering whore her temples blazed 1
And, erst, her plains of victory
Ensanguined with her children’s blood,
And darkness whore her altars stood,
Then bade her angel from the skies
Wash from thy folds her gorgeous dyes 1
Flag of the brave! no more thou’lt fly
Tiio sign of hope and triumph high 1
No more the standard of the bravo.
Thou’rt symbol of the trembling slave,
Mince he alone thy stripes will bear
And all thy shameful guerdons wear.
No more the soldier’s eye shall turn
To see thy meteor glories burn.
For those red meteors rise and fall
Like gluts of flame on midnight’s pall;
Nor foes shall heed their fitful glow,
Nor gallant arm shall strike below.
But darkling hosts shall cower beneath
The hateful messenger of death.
For Freemen’s life-blood, warm and wet,
Has dimmed thy glittering coronet l
Flag of the seas! the ocean-wave
Shall spurn thee flaunting o’er the brave.
And shamed afoam shall hurl thee back
As 'fore the broadside's reeling rack,
Wheu death careering on the gale,
Sweeps darkly round the bellied sail,
Each hapless wanderer of the sea.
Whose gaze toward Heaven shall paase at thee,
Shall blush as thou dost mocking fly,
Like hovering gboul, to see him die 1
Cold are those hearts that warmed for thee,
And all their love-born hopes are fled;
No more thou’rt standard of the free,
Thy sons of valor all are dead 1
Grim horror claims ttie free heart's home.
To vandal hordes for rapine given,
Whose flames did light the walkiu dome
And shamed the genial glow of Heayen !
Go! float above yon Bastile’s towers
Where late the despot bide tue wa/e,
Aud as the night of freedom lowers
Heuceforth be standard of the slave.
******
Behold 1 the young morn streaks the sky;
Thou old stars deck the welkin dome;
Bee Faction’s clouds how swift they fly I
While Freedom seeks her ancieut home;
Blie fliugs her banner o’er the lea;
it greets each eun-lit hill and dale,
Silutes the the sky, the emu, the sea,
Aud floats in beauty on the gale;
Its azure lolds, bow Bright they gleam 1
Hiuce all its hues were born in Heaven—
Like lingering memories of a dream,
Or weird forms in Bummer’s even;
Btill miscreants claim i s magic sway
fu vapid boastiugs, deep aud loud,
While Freedom’s self they scourge away
To die withiu her bloody shroud.
