Wednesday, May 13.
Oh, come, and let us be merry, for here are more
ylctima ! We spectators leave oar labor! and oar re-
sponsibilltie!, and com# up to see the einnere suffer,
and here we have enough to answer, though lms
than a surfeit. Biing them on that we may feed our
morbid appetites 1 It is bewitching, too, to tcan the
aturdy officer! of the law, dignified, a liUle grim—if
they appeared a trifle fiercer it wpuld anit ua better,
for we want poelUve excitement. The reporters
look listless and handle their patella mechanically,
bnt they will get the names down—that gives a zest
to the performance. Bring on ths victims—let ns
see whether they are pale and trembling or brazen
faced and defiant!
Now, oh ye spectators, listen and learn, for if you
came for chaff you may get good seed. See what l he
wages of sin are In this world, and take warning If
you dread the jail. The game caught in this trap
gets away not easily, and if it escapes it carries the
marks of the trap along, and sometimes they are
hard to hial or cover up. You can’t p’ay off any
kleptomania or absence of mind In this tribunal.
No snbtarfage is worth a cent. He stole; I saw
him; we arrested him; thirty days In jail—that’s the
formula. “Honesty is the beBt policy,” and bo you’ll
find It, my colsred fellow citizens, who are crowding
and hustling over the bar t j see fiomebody punished,
and look to it that yon remember the maxim, or yon
may get on the other side of the railing before yon
know It.
The first case called this morning was that of the
Becond officer of a vessel, and a common a allot>
charged with breaking into the store of Daniel
Sullivan and robbing the money drawer of about two
dollars. The evidence showed that the mate was in
nocent, and, In fact requested the ‘Others to arrest
the sailor, who was very drank, mad from rum, bnt
with considerable method in his'madness, for-he
broke open the door very scientifically, eliminated
the cash from the other contents of the drawer with
delicate discrimination, and, when caught by Mr.
8ullivar, doused the pelf into a water pitcher, and
looked as innocent as a lamb. The mate was prompt
ly discharged. 1 he other says liis ship sails to-Jay,
and there is a slight prospect of getting rid of him,
for his case was continued.
Wm. Sweet, a sweet-scented-geranium son of the
Old Dominion, who somehow has wandered down
here to do mischief, went into the store of A. M.
Cohen with a gang of other negroes, and while they
were occupying Mr. Cohen's attention at the other
end of the store, stole a pistol from the show-window
and slack it under his coat. William’s lucid ex
plauation was as follows: “I went into de atoab, an

Ths Opsba.--There waa ft
tosabl* attendance at the Theetotflatr night towit-
neu the first performance of the Barks Italian Opera
Troupe, and we feel assured that, howeter high the
expectations of onr public may have been raiaedby
the favorable notices of the press which preceded
them, these expectations were' evenmore than real
ized. If we missed the meagre orchestra and skele
ton c'xorns with whieh the grand opera in Savannah
has heretofore teen accompanied, their absence wan
more than compensated brtbe complete and perfect
manner in which the seal and spirit of tha open

The male parts were well rendered. Signor Or-
landini (Figaro) is a fine bari-oce and good actor.
Signor Boye old ample justice to the part of Count
Almvtra. Signor 8naini was all himself as Don Bar-
tolo, hla rich basso and quaint humor carrying us
back to other days. Signor LocatelU w is all that
could be desiied as Doa B.'.silio. *
Miss McCulloch, as Roaina, was, however, the chief
attraction. Her einging and acting was charming,
and from the rising of the enrtain to the close sht con-
tinned to increase in the favor of the andience. Her
voice is remarkable for ite liquid sweetness, purity
and fresbneas, while the modest nalreU of her style
of acting wins all hearts.
In the concerted music she was at no time at mult
but in the popular solo introduced in the second act
she completely carried the andience into exstacies of
admiration. Breathless and still, the vast auditory
hnng upon the “low, faintly, dying away echo In
which the concluded the eeveral stanzas,’’and with
retnrniog respiration burst forth in demonstrations
of applause. She graceful'y responded to the encore,
aud with another exquisite performance elicited still
more rapturous applause.
The entertainment, as a whole, was a moat decided
success, in acknowledgement of which the troupe
was at the close called before the curtain.

A largo number of them are from this place.
Choice Mutton Just Arrived.—Paying
an early visit to the Market yesterday morning we
w^re attracted at stalls 9 and 11, kept by C. T*
Cooper & Oo., by a display of the finest mntton we
have seen for a long time, thick, fat and with a most
appetizing look generally. There were also lamb
■i iarters tuperior to anything the market has afforded
of late. A test of the meat on onr table yesterday
proved that its appearances were not at all deceptive.
0q inquiry we learned that Messrs. Cooper A Co.
have just made a choice importation of three hun
dred selected sheep and lambs from Florida, from
which th< y supply their stalls every day. This is
great acquisition to the market stock, and we are
glad to know it will be kept up.

Wehuve always maintained the great superiority
of tue Savannah Police, so manifest as to make them
c jnsplcn jus as one of the good institutions of the
city. We have attributed it to the careful selection
from the candidates, their rig : d ex imluaticn before
being accepted, the appointment of men of coolness,
judgment and integrity to direct them, with the eye
of the Chief of Police and the Mayor liable to be upon
them at any moment, day or night; and to the rigid
discipline enforced without fear or favor or regard to
influence, or any other consideration whatever. With
its large negro population, and the diabolical lcfla
ences constantly working turbulence among the-**;
with the delic ite relations the city authorities s attain
to the mi.itary powers; with the constant occurrence
of uncontemplated emerge, ciee, where judgment
aad coolness as well as courage and strength are re
quired, we eay it is a wonder, and a very creditable
fact for the police force, that 8avannah Is one of the
most orderly cities in the country, North or South
The nights and Babbaths are stiller than in Paritun
New England, the busiueag days are undisturbed by
braw 8 or tumults. It i3with a desire to encourage
that thorough dicdpline cl the police which aids so
greatly in such good resalte, and. If need be, furnish
an example to others who may possibly be benefited
by it, that we chronicle a case which it w;.s our fitst
impulse to expunge entirely from onr notes, out ot
pity for the feelings oi the party. Policeman A-
J. Lee was charged with obtaining leave of absence
from duty on false pretences, and with allowing a
ciliz n to take his belt aud c;ub from him it ap
pears he got excused early in the evening, on the
ground that his wile was very sick. At 10 o’clock he
was found at the circus. Avout the same time a man
was arre^Ud with Lee’s bell and club on. He says
Lee gave them to him in order to pass him into the
eircus, which Lee denies, stating that the equipments
were snatched while he had them off repairing his
pistol. The case, however, was entirely against hiui,
and His Honor gave him a severe teprimand, remind
ing him of his solemn oath on being sworn In as an
officer. He men formally dismissed him from the
pollco force, and fined him ten dollars.

year aud a half ue has been proprietor of the Irviog
Bouse (corner of Jefferson and St. Jnlien street) has
made it oue of the moat popular institutions of the
tied in town. He relies mainly on regdlar enstom-
fere, who know ihe superiority of his stock, and 80
av0 ‘da the disorder and noise of saloons dependent
transient patronage. He has just racked off a
pipe of as good port wine as can be found on sale in
town, and also a p'pe of superior sherry. All his
stock is carefully ee'ected, and be gives constant per-

A Sharp Lawyer Caught at His Tricks.
d »y or two since we learned of an affair in which
tlie U. 8. Marshal of this place “ smelt a big rat” in
* ,J, ne proceedings which stayed him from executing
116 law, and brought the said rat to light.
As we learn, about three weeks ago, a depnty Mai*
s hal of this city went to a place near Batler, on the
Macon A Columbus Railroad, to levy upon some prop-
eriy by virtue of a judgment Issued ont of tbe U. 8.
District Court. The conneel of the parties interested
'earning of this movement of the Marshal, and to
Prevent him from making the levy, prompted a per
*°n to personate the Sheriff of the county. The bo
gus Sheriff went to the store on tha morning the levy
*as to take place and took possession. When the
Marshal arrived he assarted that he was the Sheriff
°f the county and in legal possession of the property,
tod threatened to visit with vloleqce any attempt cf
tae Marshal to make the lety. Tbe bogus Sheriff
bore the same name as tha real Sheriff, end ao strongly
toserted his right there that tha Marshal was con-
v inced that everything was right and left. On his
Way back his suspicions were aroused end he made
inquiries which showed that he had been duped. He
Uien had the lawyer and bogus Sheriff arrested by
'*8*1 process, and had them brought here under
8Q»rd. A hearing waa given then before the Com-
^Ueloner, and the affair settled.
In accordance with the request of the Ladies' Coir,
mittee, wbo tendered the complimentary pic-nio to
the Oglethorpe Fire Company, most of tbe gentlemen

parlor was filled, aud mnch interest was manifested.
On motion of one of ibe ladies, John J.,Kelley,
Esq., was called t to tbe chair, and Gapt. George A.
Mercer chosen Secretary.
One of the ladies stated the object of the request for
this convocation. The ladies proposed to furnish all
the material for the festival, but should require tbe
aid of the gentlemen in maintaining order, and ma*
ki::g tome arrangements that hardly came within the
scope of a ladies’ committee.
On motion, the following names were added to the
gentlemen’s committee: Gen. Robert H. Anderson,
Henry Brigham, Wm. Hone, H. G. Ruwe, B. B. Fer-
iiil, Waring Russell, E. A. Soullard, Joseph S. Olag*

The following ie.ter was handed to the Secretary
by JudgeD. A. O’Byrne:

ments for the next ten days would preclude the pos
sibility of kis preparing an address, though he ex
pressed the deepest interest in the Company, and

the featival successful.
Judge O’Byrne olaimed that, if it was not leap
year, he had no right to reluae any request of the
ladies. Cl'y Clerk Stewart corrected him by inform
ing him that it WtS leap year, whereupon the Judge
xensed himself on the ground ihat he wm a married
man, and not posted in such matters. He urged Mr.
Kelley’s acceptance ao vigorously, and was followed
up ao earnestly by Judge Hassell, that Ur. Kelley
anally said he would not poetUvely refuse; he would
be there, and, if possible, would make a few re
marks.
It was announced that the ladies would wish to
have till 11 o’clock at the'jjrounds to maka their pre

Tee Tennessee Beef Trade —Daring the
past winter the best beef in the market has come
from Tennessee. It has been brought here alive, in
cars, corralled a few miles ont of town, and killed as
it was wanted. This supply has been confined to
two or three prominent importers, and they have
fonnd the business full of annoyances. The great dis.
lance renders transportation somewhat precarious,
and it la almost impossible to keep snch cattle as ar
rive here safe and sound from being stolen. In spile
of tbe most careful surveillance over the pastures the
negroes manage to carry off live oattle, beef, hides,
anything valuable they can put their hands on. This
source of supply is nearly cut off by the approach of
hot weather, and as good Florida beef does not begin
to come inr till tha latter part of June, beei-eaters
will have rather inferior diet for tbe month following
tbe exhaustion of the Tennessee beef now on hand
