THURSDAY MORNING, ftAY l4,1868-
MAY,
The sweet, volnpthous May
Is here at length—through all the sUnny hours
Over the grateful eartU to sprinkle flowers
In beautiful array, • , ,
And clothe with deeper vendare hill an l plain.
And give the woods their glory back again.
No bird whose swelling throat
Uuivers with song, or whose extended wing
hans the soft air, but cheerlier doth sing,
While o’er the breezes float
Odors from blossoniH which the son’s cares*,
Wakes to new life in field and wilderness.
The shimmering sunlight falls
On mount and valley with a softer sheen;
And lol the orchards, newly clothed with green,
Lift up their coronals
Of flowers brigbt-hued, or, shaken by the breeze.
Rain their sweet largess from a thousand treeB.
The green and tender maize
Pierces the moistened mold, and from the air
And o*rth and sunlight gather strength to dare
The sultry summer daye;
And spring’s sweet promise of autumnal fruit
l Lives in the blade of every fragile shoot.
Out underue&th the sky,
Where the free wiuds may toss their sunny curls.
Frolic glad compauies of boys and girls,
In sinless revelry;
While nature smiles approving on their play.
And lambs aud birds with theid keep holiday.
