The Opera ia a musical gem, and it was certainly wed

We are pleased, as we doubt not oar reader* wiU
bj, to learn from the correspondence published
b-low that a complimentary benefit has been ten
dered to Miss McCulloch, to take place to-night. We
are grat fled at this not only on accoont of the young
lady, who is in every respect so deserving, but be*
cause it is an appropriate testimonial of the good
tatte, appreciation and gallantry of Savannahians.
I a Chariestoh Miss McCulloch was honored with a
pc rfect oration, but we suspected State pride had
some part in that enthusiastic demonstration of popu
lar favor. Since we have heard her enchanting
voice, we are convinced that no each incentive was
necessary. And the benefit to-night will be a compli
ment to talent, genius and personal worth, inch as
we tru-t will be gratifying to her and worthy of onr
public.

twelve were frpm this.city, five from Augusts,
twenty-five from Sparta, thirtj-s$y„en from Marton,
Twiggs county, and two hundred and four from Co- ,
Iambus, Georgia; twelve from Mobile, and thlrTy-nine
from Bnfaula, Alabama; forty-two from Colcmbue*
Misa.; sixty-five from Bidge,S.C.: and nine from
Nashville, Tenn. They have cjiosen as their places
of settlement in the African Republic—Monrovia,
sixty-eight; Cape Palmas, ninety; and Basia, two
hundred and ninety-two. '
Most of the men are farmers .and mechanics, and
are well supplied with agricultural imilenents and
tools. Turning lathes and Die requisite machinery
for grist and saw mills, lor which ample water power
abounds in Liberia, were taken by some of the well-
to-do of them. Sewing machines were not forgotten
by the women. Our stores were pairo ized by the
people for many of Ifcese articles; others were
brought by them. Free transports ion in the ship
was given them by the Society, such articles t. ndiog
to promote the success cf the emigrants and tne Re-
pnblic to which they go.
A fair proportion or the company can read, and
souiecan read and write. The communicants of
churches are remarkably numerocs. Tbe.e are five
licensed Ministers of the Baptist and Methodist de
nominations.
The reception and embarkation of the people was
conducted by Mr. William Coppioger, Corresponding
aedretary of the American Colonization Society, to
whom we are iade >ted f jr much of the above infor
mation.
Emigration to Liberia is greatly on the increase
among the people of color. Had the Society the

wi hln the limits of the city last night. It was be

came into the ring in fine spirits.* They stripped
well, Frazor being app irently the best pnt up, though

advantage. Gordon appeared the more kinky, and
pro nised to be a fair match. On the toss np Dick
got the choice of position with the sun at his back.
First round. After some cautions sparring Bichaid
flung out a left-hander, which was countered by
Andy, who got a telling one in on Dick’s beof-trap.—
More sparrin , and Dick, ftinting with bis left, got

which took bis wind clean oat of him, and sent him
reeling to grass. 2 cents to 1 on Dick—few trans

Frazer steady as a ball. More sparring, in which
Andy got a good one in on biB opponent's left optic,
closing it up, and peeling his right orb by a quick
repeat or. 1 to 3 iff.red against the favorite—no

Two brothers, Isaac Miller, a young colored man of

on deaf ears, and finally Ben, who is large'and fat,
undertook to whip bis brother. I-aac was discharged,
and Ben fined eight dollars, which is just eight hun

We have often been annoyed, especially in the vl
ciuity of the hotels, by a gang of little black raga

such a fuss about ore goneiall; sto.en from the door

spent as soon as earned. When the regular news
boys of the papers come about, they are hooted,
saoited and run off, especially if Urey ate white —
These sham newsboys got so troublesome that the
Mayor some time since issued an order requiring
venders of papers to record their names and get
license. Of course, none ol these little reptiles have
complied. Yesterday mornii g Thomas Quinn, an
industrious white newsboy, who has always con
ducted himself properly* *o far as we have seen, was
set upon by some of thMe gj^celess wretches as he
was crossing Johnson Square. He gave one of the
ringleaders a good one in the aide of the head, and
then a melee followed. Policeman McBlligott ar

Review of the Savannah Market,
MERCHANTS' GENERAL EXCHANGE,]
Savannah, Thursday, May 14,1868. j
Cotton—Ha* exhibited another very dull week,
chiefly caused by the pretentions of holders not be
ing supported By thewdvicea from the other markets,
and those pretentions being tbemselvea folly sus-
tiined by the small weight of the stock on sale, the
almoat perpendicular dropping off in receipts, and
money to bold ail baing obtainable; and we may add
that wkea foreign-going vesaela are cleared it is gen
erally conoeded that we shall witness a redaction of
stocks in the United States ‘ports never before wit
nessed in the month of H»y since the trade of cotton
aiamned m proper volume. Our accounts of the
growing crop are far from favorable in this section,
and ia confirmed as correct by onr own atmosphere,
which has been unprecedentedly cool for the seasoa.
From the West letter* sj?e«k well of tbe com crop,
bat mention cqmplainta of rain inflicting lrj«?y on
cotton „ prcnlcnt, and it is nor Mcrtnincd "

reported as smal^, and the mass ,of receipt* »t our
