—A writer, dwelling upon the importance
of small things, says that “he always takes
notes even of a straw, especially if there
happens to be a sherry cobbler at one end of
it.
—In manufacturing cartridges for the
French Chassepot rifles large amounts of
silk are used, and the demand is at present
bo great as to have caused a considerable rise
in the price of silk ia France.
—Offers of marriage are not to be lightly
made in Massachusetts. At the Supreme
Court recently held at Barnstable in that
State, Georgiana D. Reed, a teacher, recov
ered three thousand dollars damages from
Albert O. Robbins, a physician, for breach
of promise.

The Legislature of that State has passed a
bill making the coat of arms consist of a
shield in the form of a circle, having in the
foreground on the right a sheaf of wheat;
on tne left, a bundle of seventeen arrows; in
the background, and rising above the sheaf
and arrows, a mountain range, over which is
a rising bun.
—Edwin Booth has had a gold crown built
in Bouton for his Richard, at a cost of $1,000.
There is also a collar of the order ot the
garter made entirely of gold and silver, and
a jewelled cross (spiritue aancti), also a jew
elled sword and dagger, mounted iu real
stone, the hilt and scabbard covered with
gems.

1868 Is published for information of citizens and
houStdioideiB, and aitention is called to the following
extracts from City Ordinance :

To prescribe the kind of luel lo be used for steam

affix penalties for violation of this ordinance.
Section 1- The Mayor and Aldermen of the city ol
Savannah,in Council assembled, do hereby ordain.
That from and after the pas-tog of tbis ordinance it
shall not be lawful for any pet son to use in any steam
. ntr ne boiler in said city, iu which there may be an
aruticial draught by the introduction ol steam iu the
smoke stack, any fuel other than anthracite or bito-
mlnous coal, under a pena’ty of not morethau Siuu
for each and every day’s offence.

To grant to the Savannah, 8kldaway and Seaboard
Railroad Company certain rights and prlvUesto*
on certain terms and conditions.
Section L The Mayor and Aldermen of the ettv ot
Savannah, in Connell assembled, do hereby ordain
That the Savannah, bkidaway and Seaboard Railroad
Company shall have the right, with horse railway
cars or carriages, to connect thtir line of railway
leading to and from the county with Drayton and
Whitaker streets, in Savannah, beginning at Ander
son street, and running the line of said Drayton and
Whitaker streets to Bay street and connecting h*
Bay street: provided the work of laying the track for
such carriage railway on Drayton sireet be com
menced, in good faith, within twelve months from
the date of the passing of thia ordinance, and be
completed within eighteen months from the time
of snch passing; and that the work on Whita
ker street shall be commenced within six months,
after the passing of this ordinance, and finished
within twelve months after the date of this ordi
nance: And provided farther, that the said work
■hall be done aa to gradings, crossings, and all other
things therewith connected, in the manner and on
the terms prescribed in the ordinance for the estab.

To continue in force nntil the fligst day of Jane next,
1868, the provisions of the ordinance parsed iu
Conncil on the firth day of September, 1866, enti
tled --An ordinance to suspend tor a limited period
the operation of the Fire Ordinan e of the City of
Savannah, in and over certain portions of the city,
and to remit certain penalties that may have teeu
incurred. *
Whereas, The provisions of the above recited ordl
nance, m relation to the erection and repair of build
logs in that portion of the city east of Price street
and south of Liberty street, and also that portion of.
the city east of West Broad street, sooth of Gaston
btreet and west of T»tnall street, expired on the 31st
day of July, 1S67; and whereas, said provisions were,
by an ordinance passed in Coulci! on the 2d day of
October, 1867, exunded to the 1st day of January
last, 1863, now therefore—
Section 1. 1 he Mayor aud Alder r en of the city of
Savannah, in council assembled, do hereby o;dain,
That said provisions of said above recited ordinance
of tbe 5th of September. 1866, in relation to tqch
erection and repair ol buildings wit bin said portions
of said city, be and the same are hereby farther ex
tended from said 1st day of January last to the 1st
day of June next, 1-6S.

To give to the Commissioners of Pilotage for the Bar
of Tybee and Kjyer Savannah the power to make
rules and regulations for the government of toe
Harbor Master of Savannah, f-nbject to the ap
proval, revision anil control of the City Council
of Savannah, and on certain terms and condi
tions.
Section J. The Mayor acd Aldermen of the city of
Savannah, in Council assembled, do hereby ordain,
That power is hereby given to the Commissioners ol
pilotage for the Bar ot Tybee and Riyer Savannah to
make rules and rtgu}<ttions for the government of
the Harbor Master of Savannah, subject to the ap
proval, revision and control of the City Conncil of
Savannah; and that, upon the adoption of such roles
and regulations and the approval of Council, the
same shall be the rules and regulations for the gov
ernment of said Harbor Master, under the direction
tion of said Commissioners of Pilotage, subject to
revision and control by said City Council: And pro
vided further, that nothing in this ordinance con
tained shall be construed to prevent the Mayor in tbe
Police Court, or the Moyor and Aldermen In Gouncil
assembled, from inflicting t auch fines and penalties
on snch Harbor Master for official delinquencies as
may bo authorized by law or ordinance, or to pre
vent the Mayor from exercising the control of said
Harbor Master, in respect to suspension from office
or otherwise, as said Mayor may exercise over other
city officers, or to prevent the City Council from at
any time modify ng, changing or repealing this ordi
nance. '

certain Cotton Presses in Savannah, upon to?
lines of any other adjacent Presses.
Section 1. The Mayor and Aldermen of the city of
Savannah, in Council assembled, do hereby ordain,
That hereafter no vessels lying, loading, or discharg
ing at the wharf of either of the Cotton Presses
known as Demand’s Lower Cotton Press, or the Cot
ton Prem known si the Tyier Cotton Press, shall be
permitted to encroach by bowsprit or other part of
the vessel on the line of the wharf of the otDer Press
at which said ve9se' may not belying, loading or dis
charging. without the consent of the agent or own
ers of such other Press, and that it is hereby made
the duty of the Harbor Master to prevent any such
enaroacbment without consent as aforesaid; and that
for a violation of any of the provisions of this ordi
nance, the party in fault, whether snch party be own
ers or agents of any such Press, of the Harbor MM
ter, shall be liable to a penally of npt more tow
thirty dollars for every day’s or. part of a day s ds*
