[SPECIAL
CORRESPONDENCE OF THE NEWS AND
HERALD ]
Washington, D. C-, May 13, 18G8.
There is really bat one topic discussed in
tbe Federal city—Impeachment—which is
j U the mouths of all, from statesmen and
Senators, down to the ragged d;ukey in the
streets. It has been the universal theme
8 i 0C e Monday, when the conspirators knew
n r5 t of the break in their ranks in the Senate.
Bat do not believe that it has been all talk
or speculation. There has been work done
since that time. On Tuesday morning it
was definitely ascertained by the Im-
peacbers, that a vote then, as had been
previously agreed on, would ensure the
triumphant acquittal, particularly as Senator
Howard, one of the trustiest of their faction,
*.,5 loo ill to be in his place in the Senate.
Etch with Wade’s vote—and that worthy
vi.i willing to cast it—only thirty-five votes
:>ui.* be counted, so they agreed in caucus
Judges in caucus!) the final rendering
should be postponed until Saturday. It is
understood that this was done for tbe double
purpose of having Howard’s vote, and also
D Ascertain if all of the wavering Senators,
could be counted on certainly, and likewise
to know if some others could be tampered
with, aod the conspirators have worked like
beavers. The Missouri delegation (Radicals)
addressed a note to Senator Henderson, im
pudently requesting him not to vote or to
resign. Subsequently they visited him
at his lodgings, and staid late in the
niglitb. But the Senator did not require
their careful nursing and attention—they,
and uot he, were sick! They left the
Senator profoundly disgusted with Impeach
ment and their Conservative Senator. There
have been rum irs since touching the posi
tion ot the Senator, and faint hopes were
entertained by the Radicals he might vote
for the 11th article, but to-night that hope
has been abandoned. The Senator dined
last evening with the Chief Justice, and so
simple an event has been magnified into
splendid party at which all the doubtful
Senators were present-’’
But this Senator is the least abused of the
•‘four” whose names are lobe made more
prominent in our history by their action on
Presidential election over the whole coun
try ? They will stop at no measure, however
wicked. They are all working for the same
end, and chief among them is the great
Ulysses. Do you doubt It? Read the sub
joined letter, addressed by one of his friend 0 ,
who is one of the chief wire-workers Lee
The writer, Major Moss, thus writes the
Anti-Slavery Society at their meeting yester
day in New York:
W vshinqton, D. C, May 12.
Rev. A. M. Pcwell:
Tell your friends of the anniversary that
impeachment is 6nre to be successful in spite
of the treachery of a few Republican Sena
tors.
General Grant is working hard with his
friends to secure conviction. He says his
acquittal (tbe President’s) will result in
bloodshed. His opinions ought to influence
Republican Sentors to remove the only ob
stacle ia the way of peace.
By the way, General Grant the past three
weeks has declared himself in favor of uni
versal suffrage, and declares that must be
the ruling idea of his administia ion, if
elected in 1868.
Radicalism will, in spite of ihe timidity and
treachery of Republican Senators, secure a
peifect triumph ia 1868. It will rale the
next administration and dictate' the policy of
the nation herafter.
Charles E. Moss.
There's an obedient soldier for yon! The
conspirators will beyond doubt overreach
themselves, but their purpose to get Johnson
out of the way is plain, and it may not end
just here. It should be staled, however,
that several Republican Senators arc opposed
to postponing the verdict beyond Saturday,
and with their aid the Democrats and Con
servatives may be enabled to force it through.
The country is tired of it, and even many of
those eogaged in it are disgusted with it
Among the unpleasant outside features of
this trial is the bolting on the event. It ba9
been carried on as pnblioly as men make
bids at an auction, and the fluctuations in
the odds have been chronicled as regularly
in the newspapers as they are in tbe sporting
journals of England before a “Derby day,”
or a fight for a championship in a pugilistic
ring. Thus this most important trial in the
history of tbe United Statesr—this most grave
event in the annals of oar country—has been
degraded to the level of a horse race, or a
fight between two bruisers for a champion's
belt. Yet what else could have beeu ex
pected when Butler, as the Chief Justice
declared, “turned the Senate into a police
court?”
Ttie friends of Gen. Hancock, and Mr.
Pendleton are both here in force. It is
conceded lhe|nomination of the Democrat c
nouiimion lies between those two. And
very few here excepting friends of Mr. Pen -
dletan from the West, who are here to at
tend to his interests, before he has the ghost
of a chance for the nomination, or if he got
it to be elected. Gen. Hancock’s star is
therefore in the ascendant. New York,
Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and in truth
all the Eastern and Noith Eastern Slates are
lor him, and tbe South it is believed will dis
play quite as much uu&nimity. Tennessee
and Missouri, anl after the second ballot
Kentucky and Indiana will go for him.
Grants’ stock is below par. Ha is really
a dead weight on the party, having neither
brains, weight or popularity, but the Radi
cals have so far committed themselves, they
must give him the track. Wade, Wilt-on or
Hamliu will be selected for Vice-President.
Colfax has no chance.
The bill for the Reconstruction Committee
which passed t t-iay is abooiiaable. Ala
bama is admitted as well as the others, al
though tbe people voted down the Constitu
tion, and even old Stevens once declared it
ought not to be forced on them.

SPECIAL NOTICE.
ADDRESS
NERVOUS AND DEBILITATED,
WHOSE SUFFERINGS HAVE BEEN
PROTRACTED FROM HIDDEN
CAUSES. AND WHOSE CA3ES RE
QUIRE PROMPT TREATMENT TO
RENDER EXISTENCE DESIRABLE.
If you are suffering or have suffered from
involantary discharges, what effect does it
produce upon your general health ? Do you
feel weak, debilitated, easily tired ? Does a
little extra exertion produce palpitation of
the heart ? Does your liver, or urinary or
gans, or your kidneys, frequently get out of
order? Is your urine sometimes thick,
milky, or flocky, or ’ia it ropy on settling ?
Or does a thick scum rise to the top ? Or is
a sediment at the bottom afiet it has stood
awhile ? Do you have spells of short breath
ing or dyspepsia ? Are yonr bowels consti
pated ? Do you have spells of fainting or
rashes of blood lo the head ? Is your mem
ory impaired? Is your mind constantly
dwelling upon this subject ? Do you feel
dull, li9tleaa, moping, tired of company, ol
life ? Do you wish to be left alone, to get
away from everybody ? Does any little
thing make you start or jump ? Is your
sleep broken or restless! Is the lustre oi
your eye as brilliant? The bloom on your
cheek as bright? Do you enjoy yourself in
society us well ? Do you pursue your busi
ness with the same energy ? Do von feel us
much confidence in yourself? Are your
spirits dnll and flagging, given to fit9 ol
melancholy ? If so, do not lay it to your
liver or dyspepsia. Have you restless nights?
Your back weak, your knees weak, and have
but little appetite, and yon attribute this to
dyspepsia or liver-complaint ?
the impeachment question, than otherwise
they could possibly have been. Senators
Fesstuden, Grimes, Trumbull and Hender
son, are now the target of Radical vitupera
tion and abuse. They are denounced as
apoBtates to principle, a a traitors,
whose treason is more odious than
that of Benedict Arnold, and even bri
bery is laid to their account by the venal
Unheal press; and all because they would
not sustain a measure admitted by these con
spirators to have its foundation in party ne
cessity and not in justice. Not more does
the devil curse and gnash his teeth over.the
repentant sinner than do these wretches at
the honorable and conscientious actions of
these Senators. In their rage the con pira-
tors, snake like, turn upon and bite them
selves. Ah ! il they could but meet with a
like late. But all thjeir labors, with the as
tute and unscrupulous Benjamin F. Butler
at their head, have been productive of no
change, and to-day they hit upon a new
6cheme.
The country naturally supposed the Man
agers of Impeachment had concluded their
mission so far at least as extracting testimony
to suit their purposes was concerned, and
that ail now to be done was for a verdict to
be rendered—and then in good time the part
they have enacted, the fantastic trick9 they
have played—would be recorded and re
membered for the good or evil they had
done. But no. Tbe work of the devil is
never done To-day they re-opened the
‘ star chamber” (in the basement of tbe cap-
iloli and entered upon an “investigation.”
For this purpose they issued a summons to
Mr. Worden, the correspondent of ihe Bal
timore Sun, who is stenographer to the Pres
ident and one of his household. They in
terrogated Worden to know if any improper
influences hud been used to secure the vote
°t ibis or that Senator against impeachment,
a od likewise made inquirers touching his
sources of information on which he founded
bis prediction, as printed in tbe Sun, that
ce.tain Senators wr uld file their opinions
Hg iinst conviction,- &c., and which proved
correct. The answers of tbe correspond© U.
Wer e satisfactory, but of course the design
°f the Managers was to elicit something on
*hich to base fome further action against
the Executive. Not content with this they
also issued a summons to bring Mr. Evarts,
°oe ot the President’s counsel before them
to testify why he should so boldly assert the
rrosident would not be convicted, and what
reason he had for naming those Radical
benators as sustaining Mr. Johnson, who
has sustained him as it hag subsequently
transpired. Mr. Evarts had gone to New
however, and they did not reach him.
- N °w, have these managers transcended their
powers, and whether they have or not, what
Wa£ the object in view ? They know in the
pr^ea: posture of the impeachment trial that
acquittal is an assured fact, unless they can
yy tw o or three Senators, which is improba-
£,-, a . n( * tlial it i3 so dead it allready begins to
hnk in the nostrils of the people. Do they
l atend to galvanize it into life? Forney, as a
ernier resort, is urging them to postpone the
°te until the Southern Senators, or rather the
carpet-baggers” from these -States, are ad-
“tted, so their votes can secure the desired
crdiet. And it i9 thought by no means im-
rooable that these reckless managers may have
ometbing of this kind in view. If they do not
aueavor to compass, their designs in this way,
will be because they know the Chief Justice
an .defeat it. He alone can administer the
-Pecial oath by which Senators are entitled to.
l he case, and Chase would walk out of
e “ 0ur 5 and leave it to its infamy before he
°uld allow such an outrage to be perpetrated,
l even attempted, with nis sanction. If any
your readers imagine this to be merely
Peculation, the inquiry is pertinent if such a
Procedure would be more flagrantly infamous
|j an Jbat bill of Thad- Stevens’, which passed
“ e House to-day, admitting States to repre-
entation under Constitutions, your own. for
“Stance, which invalidates contracts (debts
seated during-the war) in palpable and di-
tc t violation of tbe. words of the Conatitu-
' on ? Indeed inch a procedure must be no
improper than the whole of the abomi-
rfkle Federal legialation over vour State and
thera in the South. Again! Will these con-

A Dabk Deed Suspected.—A late num
ber of the Key West Dispatch says: “We
see it stated in an exchange that a boat was
recently picked up with two men, and taken
into Havana. The men are supposed to be
escaped prisoners from Tortugas. As more
than two escaped with Col. Grenfell, we are
of the opinion that these are tbe two men
who ran the schooner Betty Taylor on shore
near this port aud abandoned her, and took
to the boat. Some dark deed we have al-
was suspected to be connected with this
transaction.”
Grant’s Biographies.—No less than seven
biographies are now advertised by the pub
lishers; Messrs. Grant, senior, Headley,
Dana, RichardsoD, Demiog, Howland and
Lossing competing lor tbe honor of having
written “the only reliable and authorized
life of this distinguished soldier.”
The Key West Sponge Trade.—The Key
West Dispatch says that over four ^thousand
dollars’ worth of sponges have been shipped
from that port; within the last two months.
These shipments do not include the finer quali
ty, known as the sheep-wool, but are confined
to the gra&s and glove sponges alone. The
recent impetus to this business gives employ
ment to two hundred men and boys, thus
affording those fond of “sponging’ an oppor
tunity of engaging in it in a profitable way.
Atlanta News.—The departure of that
conspicuous apostate, Brown, for the Radi
cal Chicago Convention, which meets on
Wednesday, the 20tb, and the killing of a
mad dog is the rear of the American Hotel,
were the only news items that we found,
yesterday* in onr Atlanta exchanges.—Macon

Now, reader, self-abuse, venereal diseases
badly cured, and sexual excesses, are all ca
pable of producing a weakness of the gen
erative organs. The organs of generation,
when in perfect health, make the man. Did
you ever think that those bold, defiant, en
ergetic, persevering, successful business men
are always those whose generative organs
are in perfect health ? You never hear such
men complain of being melancholy, of ner
vousness, of palpitation of the heart. They
are never afraid they cannot succeed in busi
ness; they don’t become sad and discour
aged; they are always polite and pleasant in
the company of ladies, and look you and
them right in the face—none of your down
cast looks or any other meanness about
them. I do not mean those who keep the
organs inflamed by running to excess. These
will not only ruin their constitutions, but
also those they do business with or for.
How many men from badly-cured diseases,
from the effects of self-abuse and excesses,
have brought abont that state of weakness
in those organs that has reduced tbe general
system so much as to iudneo almost every
other disease—idiocy, lunacy, paralysis,
spinal affections, suicide, and almost every
other form of disease which humanity is
heir to, and the real cause of the trouble
scarcely ever suspected, and have doctored
for all bat the right one.
Diseases of these organs require the use
of a diuretic.
