THK LOV1CO AND tOIT.
The following poem from the Cburdi of uigland
Magarlno, will come like a “song In the night'’ to j
many a stricken heart:
••The loved end lost." Why do'm c.11 diem lost.
Because we miss them from out onw ird road ?
God's unseen angels o'er our pathway Croat,
Look on us all, and loving them the inoat,
Straightway relieved them of iife'e weary load.
They ure not lost! They are within the door,
That shuts out loaa and every hateful thing—
With augelH bright and loved, oaeM * 0Qe before,
in their redeemer's presence, evermore,
Aud Uod himself their Lord, and Judge and King.
And this we call a “loaa!” Oh selfish sorrow.
Of aelflah hearts 1 Oh we of little faith !
Let ua look around some argument to borrow
Why we in patience should await the morrow
That surely must succeed this night of cesth.
Aye, look upon this dreary desert path,
The thorns and thistles wheresoe'er we tarn.
What trials and what tears, what wrongs and wrath, I
What struggles and what strife the journey bath !
Tney have escaped from these; and lo 1 we monrn. I
Ask the poor sailor, when the work Is done.
Who with hla treasure stove the shore to reach.
While with the raging waves he straggled on.
Was it not joy, when every joy seemed gone.
To see hla loved ones lauded on the beach ?
A pool' wayfarer, leading by the hand
A little child, had halted by the well,
To wash from off her feet the clinging sauds,
And tell the tired boy of that bright land
Whore, thU long journey passed, they longed to
dwell.
When lo 1 the Lord, who many mansions bad,
Drew near and looked upon the goffering twain.
Then pitying spoke : “Give me the little lad.
In strength renewed, and glorious beauty clad,
I’ll bring hlln with me when 1 come again."
Did she make answer selfishly and wrong—
"Nay, but the woes I feel, he, too, must share 1"
Or, rather bursting into grateful song
She went her way rejoicing aod made strong
To struggle on since he was freed from care.
Wo will do likewise; death hath no breach
In love and sympathy, In hope and trust;
No outward sign or sound our ears can reach,
But there’s an inward, spiritual Bpeecb,
That greets us still though mortal tongues be
dust.
I. bids us do the wot k that they laid down—
Take up the snr.g where they broke off the strain; |
Gu j jurneyiug till we reach the heavenly town,
Where are laid apenr treasures and our crown,
And our lost loved ones will be found again.
