The rain of this part of terra rather interfered with
judicial ope ationg to-day, as reigns of terror gener
ally do. Still, we had one cage left over from yes
terday, for.* sort of nest-egg, as we say in the poultry
business—that of Thomas Fowler. It will be re
membered that two were found together, and one
was taken and the other left The other one, Miley
O’Rourke, was brought in th's morning, and it ap
peared that the a-sault in which Fowler was co inex
tricably involved was a mutual affair, a regular part
nership pummelling. They both told their stories.
We opine neither of them would care to have us pnb-

the public no good and benefit nobody else, we will
merely give the lenience, Uuee dollars each aud

In the case of Thomas Hilton, Jr. vs. James Skin

favor of plaintiff for the amonnt claimed, with is-

The Grand Jury found a true bill against James
Basney, colored, for assault with intent to murder.
The Jury also reported on the snbject of the ap
pointment of Mr. Otterman as Constable. It ap
pears that officers Isaac Russell, Geo. S. Barthelmees
aud Allred E. Jones objected to the appointment by
Justice Hart of Mr. Wm. Otterman as constable, and
brought the matter to the notice of the Grand Jury.
The Jnry yesterday reported that tbe Superior Coart
having appointed eight constables, and as only three
acted it was their opinion that Justice Hart bad a
right to make the appointment.
The officers, though decided against, still protest
ag iinst the appointment of Mr. Oiterman, and intend
to pash the matter, having engaged the Hon. Julian
Hartridge to represent them.

The Market.—Variooa contrivances and
