have recorded it as well as tjie main matters
of interest connected therewith. What has
since transpired is only of less moment.
Maddened by their defeat and blinded by
their rage, the conspirators . have been
striking out recklessly, hoping to wound
some one who has contributed to their
shameful route. They charge Mr. Johnson
with proeunog an acquittal by corrupt
means. They accuse the Chief Justice of
conspiring with the Executive, and with
Fessenden, Trumbull, and others with the
same common purpose, and now they
charge that Ross, Henderson and Van
Winkle were bribed to vote against their pet
measure.
Before Renter further into that question,
let mo first refer to the trap into which the
llevoluiionary cabal fell. They had coqnted
their men mauy times, and w«ro certain of
them. They Held a caucus on Eriduy and
having secured Willey peradventure, only
Ross remained and thiir game was made up.

Divorced from the Mother and Married

Husbands add wives are not necessarily
unfaithful to one another because they take
houses in Fifth Avenue. Nevertheless, cir
cumstances are constantly occurring which
seem to prove that a residence on Fifyh
Avenue promotes au abnormal development
in morals. For instance, in one of the co
siest and most exquisite of the many little
palaces that adorn that famous thorough fare,
occurred the other day a domestic emeute, in
which a mother, a daughter and aitep-futhef

aud those of the conspirator *: who didn’t
bold high revelry as a number of them did—
slept and slept Boundly ia anticipation of
ihe victory to be wou over toeir hated foe.
They therefore went into4he vote perfectly
certain their triumph was a^lbaxtci.
Alas ! for the astute calc ulations of these
Judges (!) who have met daily to canvass
aud gloat over the downfall and degradation
°1 Andrew Johnson. Thai triumph never
came. Willey voted right, but ItqSs “weul
back on them,” (to use an. expressive if not
elegant phrase), and they left the Senate
chamber baffled in their foul designs, and
cursing and gnashing thei:r teeth.
Butler, Bingham *fc Co. went imqiediajtely
into secret Cuuaaltalion andf hatclie'd qut the

men spent in perfecting their plans, even is
suiug and having served summons on various
persons, from whom they hope to’ extort
something that may be tortured into a
charge oi corrupt practice.*; in their vote.
Tne investigation is directed towards Sena
tors Ross, Van Winkle and Henderson, but
chiefly against the former. They have sum
moned every warm friend of the President,
including Hon. Dam Voorhaes, of Iiidian i,
Perry Fuller, of Kan sas, Gen. Thoi. Swing,
Coarles T. Wooiey, and even ladies, and
umoug them pretty Misa Vinjiie.lieum, the

mou the ladies is not susceptible of an ex
planation at preseni, but it is supposed these
Massachusetts fellows (Butler and Bingham)
are following the example of the famous
“Smelling ’ (.Jommitifce of the legislature of
that State of “Know-Nothigg umefi.” The
same tate will befall these Congressmen that
did ihe others; they became the by-word
and scorn of every decent man unjd .woman

Bat it is only a gust of party passion, and
will blow over in a few days. . I here pre
dict they will not succeed in obtaining any
evidence whatever lending to show that any
Senator sustained the President for other
than conscientious motives. TIi$§e Radicals

of the smartest sayers of naughty things

She hag a daughter, a slim brunette, who
looks as her mother might have looked
twenty years ago, and frills her conversation
with scraps from the French phrase hooks.
Some mouths ago, the, widowed mother
married a foreigner, a broker in Broadway,
who has since broken her heart. The mar
riage consummated, all went on as merry
as the marriage bell, which is proverbially
suppose to vibrate in a condition of per
petual merriment. Mother, daughter, aud
step-father lived together in virtuous joy in
spite of the tradition that two’s company
and three’s a crowd. The affection of step
father and step-daughter for one another
was a phenomenon beautiful to behold',
was a “thing to ace, not to hear.” It was v
in fact, like the loves of Byron’s Pariziua
and the luckless Hugo, with the sexes re
versed, and the consequences ig that the
outraged mother and wife succeeded |n get
ling a divorce, aud the daughter and bus-
baud are living together, aod received in so
ciety as man and Wife.
All this is nothing, though. As long as
fes ai/remens are preserved, society is doubt
less right in not being too particular. So
ciety’s conduct on such .occasions is alwayL
charming. It is the soft Bedilla that removes
the harshness from the bard sounding moral
C’s of. social life. The strangest thiug ia
that the wife and mother’s heart beiog broken
she patched it up again, gi.es to dinner par
tics at her daughter’s and divorced
husbandV, and receives them at din
ner parties in return. Think of it!
What delicious comp/idsancel What know
ledge of the world 1 Wuata perfect aban
donmeut to les graces, les conveniences of life!
Think of that old woman, roughed up to the
cyebrowp, sitting vis a vis to her divorced
husband and her daughter—his wife—and
whispering banter and blandishment* to the
young men she attructs to her side, and who
are ingenious enough to color at the jokes of
a woman old enoagb to be their mother.
Jefferson County.—Tne editor 'of the
Central Georgian visited Jefferson county
last week. The SfcifjeHdr Court was in ses
sion part of two days, bat little business .was
taken np as most of the cases on the doicket
were enjoined by order ot Gen. Meade and
the new Georgia Constitution “sorcalled.
One case tried was a freedinan charged with
the offence of horse-stealing, who was con
victed and sentenced to imprisonment in the
the penitentiary for five years. The Court
remanded him bock to jail, but he
being dissatisfied at the verdict of the
jury and the sentence of the Court,
determined to escape. In the presence
of the jailer and the officer in whose custody
he was, refused to enter jail When ordered,
but in defiance of the Sheriff passed from
him and from the sight of all observers at
full locomotive speed to the swamp, not
withstanding the {Sheriff signalled his de
parture. The Grand Jury found a true bill
against some forty of her citizens, charged
with the offence of burning a negro. Sev
eral of these persons charged with the of
fence of murder have been turned over by
Gen. Meade to civil authorities and pei-
mitted to return home for trial.

Miraculous Escape from Death.—Yester
day morning two colored men in the employ
of Mr. Jobn Shamburg were strobing in the
fields near Stowman’s tavern, at Ferry Bar,
and were accompanied by a large Newfound
land dog, the property of Mr! Sbambqrg.
Ths animal had shown no previous signs of
disease, but was suddenly attacked with
hydrophobia, and made a ferocious onslaqght
upon one of the men, who was holding him
by a chain attached to his cellar. The man
seized the dog by tho throat and held him
off as best he could, bat his strength was un
equal to the task, and in all probability: he
would soon have been bitlco, and died a
moat horfiple death, if not for, ap interposi

cow belonging to Mr. Stowman, aod grazing
in the field pear by, rushed upon the dog,
and taking him on her home, tossed him
some distance off from the men, who lost no
time in making their esc »pe. The dog, upon
regaining its feet:, rushed towards Harman’s
Bridge, where the chain attached to itg collar
became entangled so that it was held fast.
The dog Was then shot by a citizam— Balti

Melancholy Suicide.—We learn that |Mr.
Magor Smith, of Oriffin, formerly of the
firm of Flemistou & Smith, of that place,
committed suicide yesterday morning
about daylight, by cutting his throat
with a razor. He got up about that hour,
went into the basement of his house, and
before anything was suspected, wa^ a
corpse. No cause is assigued for the fatal
act, further than temporary mental aberra
tion, caused by an indulgence in drink. He
leaves a wife and several children and many
friends to deplore his shocking death; —

Causes, and whose cases re

RENDER EXISTENCE DESIRABLE.
If you are suffering or have suffered from
involuntary discharges, what effect does it
produce upon your general health ? Do you
feel weak, debilitated, easily tired ? Does a
little extra exertion produce palpitation of
the heart ? Does your liver, or urinary or
gans, or your kidneys, frequently get out of
order? - Is your urine sometimes thick,
milky, or flocky, or is it ropy on settling ?
Or does a thick scum rise to the top ? Or is
a sediment at the bottom after it has stood
awhile ? Do you have spells of short breath
ing or dyspepsia ? Are your bowels consti
pated ? Do you have spells of fainting or
rashes of blood to the head? Isyonr mem
ory impaired? Is your mind constantly
dwelling upon this subject ? Do you j feel
dull, listless, moping, tired of company, of
life? Do,you wish to bo left alone, to get
away from everybody? Does any little
thing make you start or jump ? Is yoar
sleep broken or restless! Is the lustre ot
your eye as brilliant?- The bloom on your
cheek.as bright? Do you enjoy yourself in
society as well ? Do you pursue your busi
ness with the same energy? Do you feel as
much Confidence in yourself? Are your
spirits dull and flagging, given to fits of
melancholy ? If so, do not lay it to your
liver or dyspepsia. Have you restless nights?
Your back weak, your knees weak, ahd have
but little appetite, and you attribute th|s to
dyspepsia or liver-complaint ?
Now, reader, self-abuse, venereal diseases
badly cured, and sexual excesses, are all ca
pable of producing a weakness of the gen
erative organs. The organs of generation,
when in perfect health, make the man. Did
you ever think that those bold, defiant,:en
ergetic, persevering, successful business men
are always those whose generative organs
are in'perfect health ? You never hear such
men complain of being melancholy, of ner
vousness, of palpitation of the heart. They
are never afraid they cannot succeed in busi
ness; they don’t become sad and discour
aged; they are always polite and pleasant in
the company of ladies, and look you and
them right in the face—none of your down
cast looks or any other meanness about
them. I do not mean those who keep the
organs inflamed by running to excess. These
will not only ruin their constitutions, but
also those they do business with or for.
