A Yankee School Mart* Writes Love Letter* to

Several months ago a white woman by the
name of Amanda Fawler, thoroughly im
bued with love for “the poor down-trodden
African,” came here from the North, and en
tered upon duty as a teacher of colored,
children. She had no connection with the
Lswis High School, but was running upon
ao independent scale.
In the course of time she met Arthur Ed-
m >nd9. a black negro fellow, who act3 in the
capacity of porter at the family grocery store
ot Grier & Lark, and fell violently in love
with him. They carried on a correspond
ence of the most affectionate, loving and en
ding kind, as will ba seen by the speci
] r pJ m en letters published below, and often met
and billed and cooed together.
Thiugs might have thus gone on indefi
nitely. and resulted in a perinauent union
between Mis9 Amanda Fawler and her dear

tad not bejn guilty of a little piece of moral
insanity. On Wednesday night la9t Messrs.
Grier & Lark received an order purporting to
bare been signed by the wife of a prominent
minister. The order was sent by a servant
wbo bad been in her employment, and re
quested the sending of a bam, a jar of brandy
peache?, some coff ; e and sugar, aod several
other articles, amounting to eight or ten dol
lars' worth. The clerk gave the note a cur
sory glance, and not suspicioning anything,
Beni the goods as requested.
Bat when he came to copy the order into
his blotter, it occurred to him that some-
thiog was not right about it, and that it was
in tne same handwriting of Arthur’s love let
ters, which he had been in a habit of reading
for that gay Lothario. Calling upon Arthur
for a specimen letter (ot which he had a
pocket lull) and comparing the letter with
the order, his suspicions were more fully
Qonfirmsd. It only took a tew moments to
fully confirm them by a conference with the
lady from it whom purported to have come,
and finally when Miss Amanda was called
upon for un explanation, she acknowledged
having written it, but claimed to have some
authority for doing so. This wasf all stuff.
She was at once arrested and senLto jail,
and at the hour ot writing, the Grand Jury
is considering a true bill against her which
will be returned and the case tried before
Judge Cole at the present term of the Sd-
psrior Court.
Mias Amanda Fawler is about twenty-six
years of age, is not killed with good looks,
but appears to be a woman of some intelli
gence. She has been teaching a colored
Bchool near the Vineville branch, and says
she bad eighteen day scholars and more than
that number of night scholars.
Arthur has a wife and several children,
wbo will no doubt read her loving letters to
him with no small interest.
We coppy two of her letters to “Dear
Arthur,” as follows:
Macon, Ga., March 26; 1868.
Dear Arthur: As a ray of sunshine across
the frozen oarth, came your most welcome
missive to my poor heart. It was opened
and read, and its contents gave me much
pleasure to think you had not forgotten me.
1 hope you never will, for I never will ior-
get you while I live. How cau I forget any
one that, I love so dearly as I do you ? I
had writtten to you, and when I sent it
to the office I received yours, and I
hasten to respond to it. The one I
sent you last was not directed in care of any
one. It was directed to yon. So I think
you had best inquire in your own name. The
8entini2nl8 of my heart are in it, and I want
you to get it I hope you will answer this
soon, for I shall look for- an answer every
day until I get one. I want to see you very
much. I looked for you at the time you
promised to come, bat in vsio, .for I have not
seen my dear Arthur. Oh! do come soon.
jor.B I wiBh to see you, to talk with you. Write
j tome, and give me the sentiments of your
"I dear heart. If I had the chance I would
tell you more than I expect you wish to hear.
Go to the office soon and get that letter, for
I do not want my letters to stay there long
enough to be advertised. So do attend the
office very punctual, and I will do the same.
Do come soon, if you please. My dear,
don’t fail tn write me soon and often. As 1

For two hundred years she nas known all

her youth has been passed in stortns, and
often penury. But now her hoary locks nay

is no reason why the horn of plenty, should

In the lace making provinces df France, tfe'e
little girl has tne ambition to make her Cjn-
firmuiion veil. Lateroa tmotherqiaision su
percedes, and she makes her marriage veil,
and the proceeds of her active finger*-fur-

is to be her tuture paradise. That paradise
we here all look forward to, for it Is the only
taste we ever get of that better Land here*
below.
Atl marriages are prudent in Fronce-
Afarriage de Convenanceand every girl
makes and sews until she has a pile of, linen
that will last her all her life and perhaps her,
children. In St. Augustine there could be
no lack of sale for every yard of lace made,
because home produce can be sold cheaper
thau foreign goods. Every lady of fash
ion knows that Coral cbr, be w bought
cheapest iu Naples, Linen in Ireland, Dia-
mcnis iu Constantinople, Silken work in
Malta, Scissors in Sheffield, etc., etc., etc.
Why should it not be added, lace 1q-Si*.
Augastine? It is particularly adapted to
this work, because tne young girls are strik
ingly intelligent, and singularly ingenious
with their hands. It is also adapted, to the
climate,' for it is not at all laborious, but an
easy pastime. It is a work which can
bi carried on at home . sitting on the
balcony a young girl can ply her graceful
fingers, for the admiration of her Caballero
While she entertains him with the last neWd.
The Sisters have but to open a “Souvrier”
to have it crowded with applicants, t very
lady in St. Augustine, should learn Were
it only for the novelty.
To the children they would teach
reading, writing, arithmetic and kca mak
ing, to the adults the latte* qnly. There are
at least iu this city two hundred young per
sons who Would hot at all object ip-uicrease
their pocket money earning f^m two to
t iree dollars a day by an aft so' baatffiful and
lascinating, useful aud remunerative. Two
hundred persons earning on an average ten
dollars a week would make an income of two
th-msand dollars to St. Augustine weekly, or
one hundred thousand per agnAm—for one
article alone produced, fay* fakers lor the
most part under twenty*ye3rj'or age.
In the short space of time that the Eng?
lish were in possession of Florida,:they cul
tivated Indigo, and the export rose tp 48-
000 pounds. Is this not a precedent which
the Augustinians of the present Aty may
emulate with equal success in lacg owkiog.
It will be Instantly bought up from them, for
it formh Imlndispensibie portion of eveiX to
