Who Is Vinnie Ream.
[From the World.]-
M llisj Vinnie lieam is employed by Con
gress to model and complete a marble statue
„t Abraham Lincoln for the Capitol. This
room was originally offered to Bliss Hearn by
u Congressional committee, without her so-
liciuilioo, and has been used by her as a
6 siuii” with the tacit and cordial obnsent Qf
both Houses of Congress. She' is almost a
child io year9, bat a braver or a more aapir-
i fl g enthusiast never lived. Her endeavors
to perfect herself have been from the first,
auiaousand uuintermitted. iff .singled
out by the dishonored men who were at tbfe
jjeailot the impeachment as a victim, be-
emse, as ridiculously alleged, Miss Beam
••jullaeaced” the vote of a Senator for the
acqaittal of the President. Mr. Rosa U a
I gentleman, whose family, consisting of a
8 uifs and several children, reside at his Kan
sas home, tent here to represent that fata to
m the Senate, Mr. Ross applied for and ha9
pinco occupied rooms at the house of bts old
| acquaintance and neighbor in Kansas, Robt.
IL liiftm. This circumstance, associated
with the tacts that Miss Yinnic Ream is the
;jdmihter of Mr. R«am aforesaid, and that
she resides with her parents, and with the
assertion that whatever patriotic sympathies
she had were far from being associated with
the Unheal cause, led some persons who as
sembled in the Radical caucus at the Capitol
to orgiiiiz* a base scheme for the success of
the impeachment. Mr. George VV. Julian,
ol Indiana, a R idical member who was once
publicly cowhided by General Meredith, pro?
c.-eiied, doubtless at the instance of his con
federates, to Miss Ream’s studio. Miss
K’iuu might have presumed that this Indiana
demagogue was kindly diepofed to her.—
Nevertheless, her instincts were too acute
not to induce her to repel, with maidenly in
dignation, tho charge that he covertly insin
uated that she had expressed her desire to
Senator Ross as to his vote on the impeach
ment. Satisfied as he may h tve been that,
she hud not done so, the wily Julian forth
with expressed himself nearly as follows: —
‘•fiat you ought to use 3*our influence for the
sake of the great Republican party. If Mr.
R )ss don’t vote for conviction, you will be
mined.”
The sweet temper of the lady thua ad
dressed, was not quite proof against this
aametul appeal. Tho grey haired diplo
mat retired, previously, however, receiving
au intimation from Miss Ream that, although
she was not at all informed of Senator Hash’s
intention, and had no ri$bt to know of or
inquire into it, she supposed that bo, being a
Kopi’blican, would vote for the conviction ol
the President. This dastardly threat of
Julian against a trembling girl is the very
threat that Butler and bis gang are now
carrying into effect. Tue apartment in the
■Capitol which she has occupied is taken from
her.
The statue of Mr. Lincoln, now being
moulded by Miss It , in day, cannot be
removed, and the Radicals are rejoiced.
They are delighted lor this reason: this clay
mudel, upon which Miss R has been en
gaged for months, is the inception of that
work upon which she is not only to base her
ieputatiou as a sculptor, but upon which she
most i’epends for pecuniary reward. If it is
neglected, it will shrink, crack to pieces, and
be destroyed. All the artist’siabor wilMi^ve
been iu vain. There will be nothing left
Bavea skatteied, shapeless mass, to bo mois
tened, after it is too late, by a young girl’s
tears.
Butler, particularly, gloats oyer the pros
pect of each a consummation. He crossed
to tho Democratic aide of the House yester
day, and declared that, so long as he had
anything to do with the Committee on Ap
propriations, Miss Vinnie Ream should not
receive a dollar on account of her labor. He
buuI to-day, in effect, that the country de
sired no statue of Mr. Line fin trom her
hands. This creature, too fl uteringly called
“The Beast,” ba3 a daughter, yet in
neither his nature, nor in Bingham’s
nor in the natures of aoy of the men in
Congress run mad with partizanship
&ud the thirst for vengeance, does there
■ seem to be an instinct seosilive enough to
■shrink from the immolation of a helpless girl
■upon the altar of a lost and shameful caiise.
On Friday amotion was made to recon
sider the regulation removing Miss Ream
horn her studio, pending^ which a most dis
graceful debile oocarred. One General Mof-
gau, of Ohio, took position as the champion
ol Kiss Ream, and recited the alleged pur
port of a conversation, .between her and
Julian, of Indiana ;'wtfcfOT]$&r that' gentle-
got np, gave luff version, proclaiming
81 its conclusion that Vinnie Ream or any
body else who gave a different v6r6lon lied!
No one will be surprised to learn that the'
Uia Q who maffe this, proclamation on |he.
floor of Congress has been publkdy cowjjided
at home byrme C$fohel%Ie^edfflP*iruriMi-
deserved another application-of th» ooyr-
skia.
Bmier the Beast was naturally, inspired
% this example of blackguardism and cWPi
urdice to make an essay ter divide-the infamy
with Julian. He gloated over this bfntal
act, declaring that the yonog lady should not,
have a dollar for her work aft long aa he bad
a nything to do with the,OomtnittOeQb Ap
probations, and that the statue, was a thing
rbat ought to be broken. *8 it did .do bojtffr
