Mayor’s Coart.

Thursday, Jane 4.
If we might be allowed to characierlza the proceed
1(42) of tae Mayor’s Court yesterday, we would aay
tbit juvenile viciousness wa* rampant, the seats ol
sinners being occupied by youths whooertaluly never
r c ai and digested the sphorlo maxims of the wise
nun, * ‘Cease, m v son, to hear the words of instruction
tin: ciosoih to err f.om the ways of knowledge."
Upon the seat appropriated to the scornful, there
were six boys, two in the image of their Maker, and
f-jurln the samo image with'some coloring. The
grouping was classical: the blending hoea of vice
aad weiouaneas being brought out by ■ pencil la the
band of truth, for which Harper or tho Illustrated
Newj would give $500.
Staggering up at the call eime Charley Curran, e
iny of thirteen years, charged with baing drunk
and lying in the street. He connected his case with the
circa*, saying that he had been inveigled into taking
walskey. The heart of even a local was moved when
ths evidence was elicited that this boy demoralized
himself, and he woo d only remark that the country
.la in a droadlul condition, cautioning mothers to
twke head that their sons “err not from the waya of
knowledge." F*ve dollars or ten days in jail m*y
possibly correct this youth.
James Haziard, c lored, tea yeara old, Piimni
Adams, colored, thirteen years old,end John Caaaldy,.
white, lo years old, were charged with stealing chick
ens from Mr. Hull. They admitted the fact, which
w*s abundantly proved without fuch admission, two
a: least of tha parly being notorious chicken thieves.
Tueir tender ago cil'.el for mercy, and they were or
dered to the barrack) to be delivered to their parents
for caatlgilioa. James’ mother promised to see to
the sentence of tha court CO far ae her son was con
cerned, and from her statement the whip will be well
laid on,
3am Johnson and John Green, colored, were ar*
re.ted for disorderly condnet In the market, the
charge being laid for fighting. They bote admitted
the facts, and were sentenced to five dollars or ten
d ‘I« in jail, which latter alternative wee accepted.
