commanders, in obedience doubtless to in
structions from Washington, are doing every
thing to irritate and madden the white popu
lation. The official guillotine is everywhere
at work, and the victims are the purest and
best, and are immolated to gratify the brutal
passions of the most ignorant and degraded
population on the continent. The City Coun
cil of Charleston is prostrated at a blow, and
negroes and irresponsible adventurers in
vested with the entire control of a leading
Southern seaport. The city of Columbus,
Georgia, meets a similar i&te. Towns of
several thousand inhabitants, centres of trade

The language of it all Is by no meaiis-ana
uous. The wretched pariy which doritl
the Government is rendered doubly despe
rate by the continued patience and eabmis-
sisn of the South. They have not even the
hofeor of the ring. The man is down, but
they continue the punishment. “Foul play”
will soon become the na Lion’s cry. Hence
there must be freBk agitation, renewed ex
citement, more riot and bloodshed. The
people have already had too much time for
thought Such reflection must insure a re
turning sense of justice, and terminate the
rule of Radicalism and its reign of terror.
Impeachment bad its purpose iu drawing at
tention from the South; but the dome of the
Invalides has been gutlded, and the excite
ment has passed away. The South baa been
quiet and has submitted with nnlooked for
and amazing forbearance to all the villainv
of Congo Conventions and Constitutions, and
the insolence of burean and military offi
cials, and even the rule of its former
slaves. The animal must be punched
up afresh, and if he roars or breaks throngh
his iron hars and hurts somebody, there will
be (he cl 1 party bowl from Dan to Bear-
sheba, and the poor beast doomed to still
harsher treatment. Certainly judging even
from what the telegraph and our exchanges
bring us, the administration of the unrecon
structed Africanized States exhibits a con
tinuous violation of every noble American
seotiment. Law, justice,right, are ruthless
ly trampled under foot, and everything done
to goad the white population to madness.
It there were riots under such a regime, the
Radicals would be the authors. If there ate
pone, it will be owing to a passivity on the
part of the sufferers which Will' be sadly il
lustrative of the extent to which their deple
tion has been carried. Sangarado never
bled a patient worse. One half the present
wrongs of the Sooth has swelled to millions
the Fenian must roll, and made Ireland in
all her poverty, fierce and formidable to the
British crown.—AT. Y. World.

A Royal Scandal—Why the Match was
Broken off Bbtwben Kino Louis of Bata-
RIA AND THE PRINCESS SOPHIA.—The true
cause of the refusal of King Loi}hi II. of Ba
varia to marry his cousin, the Princess Sophia,
for which he was ridiculed and censured so
severely last fall, has leaked out, and it is truly
scandalous one. It appears that the lively
and good-looking princess, the youngest sister
of the Empress of Austria, had a love affair
with a handsome artist of Munich, named Han-
estengel, whom she admitted every night to her
bed-room, and when the consequences of the
liason became apparent, her family tried to get
King Louis to marry her ~ in ordeVto hide the
scandalous affair.
The king, who liked his cousin very' well,
was ready to do so, but twelve days before the
wedding wafc^io- take place, he received an
anonymous note containing' nothing but the
words, “ Your betrothed is enciente." The
young king thought this a miserable slander,
and. in his blunt, plain-spoken way, said to his
betrothed the next time he saw her, “Sophia,
did not know that you had any enemies. I
have received letters telling me that you are a
bad wom&m” Thp confusion, of the princess
was so great that * tne king’s suspicions were
aroused. He spoke to some of his confidants
about the matter,, and they told him they had
heard scandalous stories about Hauestengel’s
liason with the princess. In Consequence the
match was broken off immediately.

But he will be no stronger before the people

If the Democrats and Conservatives cor
