THK NEGRO RIOT IN WASHINGl'ON.
The Washington papers contaiu detailed ac
counts of the terrible negro riots in that city
after the election. It is a sad tale of brutal
murders, felonious housebreaking by an infuri
ated mob, murderous assaults upon unoffending
citizens without provocation, and outrages in
numerable. The negroes were evidently well
organized, for as they passed through the
streets horns were blown which drew thou
sands into their ranks. White ladies who
dared to show themselves *t the windows were
subjected to the fonlest abuse, and even the
street cars were assailed with showers of stones
and missiles. The negroes were armed with
clubs, razors, pistols and sabres, and with them
marched whole companies armed with muskets,
They yelled for Grant and Colfax while robbing,
plundering and murdering. Forney told them
that “ the whole government is in your hands,*’
and they were bound to give an indication of
what their rule would be. There seemed to be
no end to their riotous career. Maddened by
a temporary success and urged on by cowardly
backers among the whites, these “ demons let
loose” held high carnival over the city. All
authority was set at naught, and the mob re
sisted by force of arms every attempt of the
authorities to restore order. The day after the
riot they sent threatening notes to the judges
of elections and boldly ordered*obnoxioos white
men to leave the city. It is a terrible picture
and one worth noting by the advocates of ne
gro supremacy in the government of the
United States.
Wendell Phillips pursues Grant with cruel
literalness. He now says: “Grant cannot
stand up before a glasB of whiskey without
falling down,” from which it must be inferred
tffat he does not take it “straight,” bat the
reverse.
